Iran media: Tehran, three European countries agree to hold nuclear talks

NHK20-07-2025
A local media outlet in Iran reports that Tehran has agreed to hold talks on its nuclear development program with Britain, France and Germany next week.
The Tasnim News Agency, which is linked to the Revolutionary Guards, quoted informed sources on Sunday as saying Iran and the three European nations "have come to an agreement in principle on the resumption of the talks about Iran's nuclear program."
The sources said "the timing or location of the negotiations are under debate."
Britain, France and Germany are moving to trigger the "snapback" mechanism that automatically reimposes UN Security Council sanctions that were lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal.
This is apparently aimed at pressing Tehran to return to negotiations with the United States that have been suspended since Israel and the US attacked nuclear facilities in Iran last month.
The Iranian government is seeking to fend off resumption of the UN sanctions by agreeing to talk with the three European nations.
However, it remains adamant that it will not make any concessions on its nuclear program.

Thailand, Cambodia expected to hold ceasefire talks on Monday

The leaders of Thailand and Cambodia are expected to hold ceasefire talks in Malaysia as military clashes continue between the two countries. Acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet will reportedly meet on Monday afternoon. Military clashes broke out in a disputed border region last week. More than 30 people on both sides, including civilians, have reportedly been killed. On Sunday, US President Donald Trump said, "I called the prime ministers of each, and I said we're not going to make a trade deal unless you settle the war." US Secretary of State Marco Rubio revealed that State Department officials are on the ground in Malaysia to assist the peace efforts. Hun Manet said in a social media post that China will take part in the meeting.

Aid airdropped into Gaza as Israel temporarily halts military operations

Jordan and the United Arab Emirates have jointly airdropped aid into the Gaza Strip after Israel temporarily halted military operations in parts of the enclave. Israel announced on Sunday a pause in military activity during specific hours in areas where many residents live as evacuees. Israel also said that designated secure routes will be in place to enable the United Nations and other aid organizations to deliver supplies safely. The move comes as global outrage increased over rising deaths of Palestinians from starvation after Israel imposed restrictions on the delivery of aid. Local media say that the total amount of airdropped aid by Jordan and the United Arab Emirates on Sunday was about 25 tons. At the Rafah crossing on the border between Gaza and Egypt, trucks carrying supplies headed toward the strip. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu noted on the same day that Israel is making progress on both fighting and negotiations, and that it will continue to fight until Hamas is destroyed and all hostages are released. Qatar-based broadcaster Al Jazeera reported on Sunday that a house in northern Gaza was hit by an Israeli attack, and a mother and her four children were killed.
