Dublin: 'Incredibly brave' lorry driver saves man from burning building

BBC News26-06-2025
A groceries delivery driver has described how he used a lorry to rescue a man from a burning building in Dublin.Tomasz Zareba reversed his lorry up to the city centre building to allow a man who was trapped at a third-floor window to jump to safety onto the roof of the vehicle.Thick black smoke was billowing from the building in the Granby Row area of the Irish capital shortly after 08:00 local time on Monday when the Eurospar driver intervened.Commenting on what happened, Mr Zareba, who is originally from Poland, described how the man was "screaming" for help at the time.
He said: "I just thought it would be much safer for him to jump on the lorry instead of the footpath.""I saw the smoke coming from the window because my next delivery was just around the corner."I saw the flames coming up from the window and one guy was lying on the footpath. He had blood on his face, and I think he might have broken both his legs when he jumped from the building," he added."Another guy was screaming from the window. He didn't know what he was supposed to do because he had flames behind him, and the long drop below him."I reversed the lorry as close as I safely could to the window and the other lads from the footpath told him to jump on the roof of the lorry."He was ok, I think," Mr Zareba said."I asked him how many people were in the building, but he didn't know because he was in shock. I waited in case maybe somebody else would need to jump from the window."After a while, I pulled the lorry to a safe place and waited for the fire brigade. I waited another 20 minutes because the road was blocked and then the fireman came over and said, 'Grand job buddy, thanks for that' and I went on to finish my deliveries for the day."
'Quick thinking'
The driver has been praised by his bosses.Joanne Mellon, Logistics Director of BWG Foods, which owns and operates the Eurospar brand in Ireland, said, "We want to commend Tomasz for his quick thinking to help this person escape from the burning building."It was an incredibly brave intervention, with the assistance of others who were in the area, in what must have been a very frightening experience. We hope those who were caught up in the incident make a full recovery.Dublin Fire Brigade said seven people were treated at the scene and three were taken to hospital for treatment.

Sanjeev Gupta readies last-ditch plan to save specialty arm of Liberty Steel

Sanjeev Gupta is preparing a last-ditch attempt to save the remaining arm of his Liberty Steel business as government officials step up planning for a collapse of the business within days. Gupta is understood to have spent the weekend planning an 11th hour rescue deal to save the company's Speciality Steels UK (SSUK) division days before a courtroom showdown with its creditors on Wednesday. The metals magnate hopes to secure a pre-pack administration deal that would allow the company to ditch its debts and other liabilities before being bought back by Gupta or parties connected to him. The plan is likely to raise eyebrows in Whitehall where government officials are reportedly planning for a collapse of the heavily indebted steel division, while fraud investigations into other areas of Gupta's business empire remain open. A Liberty Steel spokesperson said discussions are ongoing to finalise options for SSUK that 'best serve the interests of creditors, employees and the broader community'. The restructuring specialist Begbies Traynor is working on the pre-pack deal, according to Sky News, which first reported the plans, but any deal would need Liberty Steel's creditors, including the British tax authority HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and Swiss lender UBS, to agree to write off potentially hundreds of millions of pounds of debt. Gupta has limited time to finalise any attempt to rescue his subsidiary before an expected court hearing on Wednesday relating to a winding-up petition, that was issued by a supplier over unpaid debts. Government officials have reportedly stepped up planning for the collapse of SSUK if the winding-up petition is approved this week, according to Sky. The hearing, which has already been deferred several times, could force SSUK into compulsory liquidation, leaving a court-appointed official receiver to run the business. SSUK is the UK's third-largest steel producer and employs nearly 1,500 people. The South Yorkshire-based business includes an electric arc furnace at Rotherham, plus steelworks in Stocksbridge, near Sheffield, making steel for the car industry, as well as for use in construction and engineering. Financial pressure has been mounting on Gupta's metals and energy companies stretching from Australia through Singapore and Romania to northern England, known as the GFG Alliance. The group has been in trouble since the 2021 failure of Greensill Capital, which collapsed after lending GFG about $5bn (£3.7bn). Gupta has been engaged in long-running talks with the administrators of Greensill, who are trying to recover the money. GFG has been under investigation by the UK's Serious Fraud Office since 2021 in relation to the Greensill financing. The company and Gupta have denied any wrongdoing. Gupta is also being prosecuted by Companies House over the failure to file accounts for more than 70 UK businesses – including those of Liberty Pipes, based in Hartlepool. He has pleaded not guilty. Some industry figures have said they expect the government to step in to ensure the plants keep running if they fall into liquidation – although it is not thought that the government will give financial support to Gupta's companies. A spokesperson at the Department for Business said: 'We continue to closely monitor developments around Liberty Steel, including any public hearings, which are a matter for the company.' Continued financial pressures on Gupta's companies have followed years of difficulty for the wider UK steel industry. British steel production fell to its lowest level since the 1930s in 2024, and the government in effect took over the British Steel blast furnaces at Scunthorpe in April, amid fears of more than 2,700 job losses and the end of primary steel-making in the UK.

Miniature classic car-maker Hedley Studios revs up rescue deal

A company which makes miniaturised electric versions of classic cars has secured a rescue deal led by an American merchant banking group. Sky News understands that the future of Hedley Studios - formerly known as The Little Car Company - has been salvaged through a pre-pack administration deal. FRP Advisory is understood to have acted as administrator before selling the business to an entity controlled by Island Capital Group. Hedley Studios was founded in 2018, when luxury car-maker Bugatti approached Ben Hedley to see if he could recreate a 1920s Type 35 racing car at half-scale to mark its 110th anniversary. In a statement issued in response to an enquiry from Sky News, the company said it had built and delivered more than 500 vehicles to clients in more than 60 countries in the last 17 months. Hedley Studios manufactures its cars at three-quarters the size of the original model, with the resulting vehicles typically costing £75,000 or more. "We're thrilled to welcome Island Capital Group as a strategic partner in the next phase of Hedley Studios' growth," Mr Hedley said. "Its investment and belief in our vision mark a pivotal moment for the company as we accelerate our expansion and reach new global audiences. Hedley Studios makes its cars in partnership with a range of luxury manufacturers, including Aston Martin, Bentley and Ferrari. Andrew Farkas, founder, chairman and CEO of Island Capital, which initially backed Hedley Studios in 2023, said: "This latest investment is testament to the entrepreneurial spirit of Ben and his team in building a successful British luxury brand in a short period of time. "Automotive enthusiasts globally are increasingly keen to honour these historic icons, bringing them to new audiences in a new, fully electric way.
