Calls grow louder for Latrell Mitchell switch after Jye Gray stars in Souths' win over Dolphins

Yahoo07-03-2025
Wayne Bennett might have to find a new position for Latrell Mitchell if Jye Gray keeps playing the way he did on Friday night in the Rabbitohs' win over the Dolphins. Gray was involved in everything as Souths won 16-14 in Bennett's first game in charge of the Bunnies since 2021.
Gray had a staggering 25 runs for 213 metres, laying on a try assist and breaking four tackles. He also had a line-break assist and played a hand in the Rabbitohs' match-winning try in the dying stages.
With regular fullback Mitchell set to miss the first month of the season, Gray made the perfect case for why he should keep the No.1 role even when Latrell is back. Debate has been raging since last season about Mitchell's best position, with many of the belief he'd be better suited to playing in the centres.
Mitchell doesn't get through as much work as Gray and can often be found out in defence. He'd slimmed down in the off-season and was being tipped to have a monster season under Bennett, but a hamstring injury has ruined all the fitness gains he made.
It remains to be seen how Mitchell will return, but there's a genuine argument that Souths would be better off with Gray at fullback and Latrell in the centres. And a brutal injury setback for young winger Tyrone Munro might have made the decision easier.
Munro scored two tries on Friday night, but suffered yet another collar bone injury. If he's forced to miss another extended period, Bennett could look to move Campbell Graham to the wing and have Mitchell play centre. It would certainly take some of the load of Mitchell's legs after hamstring, calf and foot injuries in the last two years.
Jye Gray >>> Latrell Mitchell.#RabbitStew

Jye Gray never ceases to amaze with his bravery and never say die attitude to seize his opportunity. Great to see Stretch Graham back, sorely missed last season, some terrific moments in a gritty win. https://t.co/4bStf21Iz9

Campbell Graham's comeback match tonight was amazing & inspirational! Jye Gray is a star player already.

Speaking last month, former NRL player Joel Caine declared Mitchell isn't a fullback and should move to the centres - where he's thrived for NSW and Australia. Mitchell doesn't have the same work-rate as a Dylan Edwards or James Tedesco, but could still roam around the field if he's playing out wider. According to Caine, it's playing with fire making Mitchell play at the back and do so much extra running and grunt work.
"I don't believe he's a fullback," Caine said about Mitchell on SEN radio. "In many degrees I think the same of Tommy Turbo (Trbojevic). These guys are such hard-wired athletes. Why do we need Tommy Turbo, Latrell Mitchell... catching the ball at the back of the field and trucking it up the end of the field? Why don't we put the Porsche's in the garage. Play them in the centres. We don't need them doing all that work and all those carries throughout the year and doubling the load.
"Why do we have to obsess about putting the load on Latrell Mitchell chasing behind the line and covering his line? And the same with Turbo. Why can't we just name them in the centres and let's get Jack Wighton, let's get Reuben Garrick... the smaller bodies to be the tractors, get us out of our own half and then when we get in their half (let them do their thing). There's no rules that say if you play centre you have to be hedged to a certain side for the whole game."
Jimmy Smith expressed similar sentiments last year after a game against the Cowboys in which Mitchell failed to fire. Smith said on SEN radio: 'Physically [Mitchell] is incapable of providing for that team what is required of your fullback. I mean (incapable) by connection to the line in defence, talking to people…where's the organisation of the defensive line? You see this at the ground just how far away, how disconnected, Latrell is from his defensive line. Then there's a lack of involvement, how much involvement? 14 carries for 70 metres. Get him to the centre position.'

Sharks fans rocked as Cameron McInnes news leaves Craig Fitzgibbon with huge call

The Cronulla Sharks will have to continue their top four surge without influential lock Cameron McInnes after the forward ruptured his ACL in the win over the Gold Coast Titans. Braydon Trindall and Nicho Hynes tore a depleted-Titans side apart on Saturday having smashed their rivals 54-22 in front of their home crowd. The Sharks have struggled for consistency in 2025, but Hynes and Trindall showed the damage they can do when linking up with their outside backs. However, coach Craig Fitzgibbon will be ruing the loss of his captain with scans revealing the lock is in for a long recovery. "Sharks captain Cameron McInnes faces a lengthy recovery period after scans on Monday confirmed a ruptured ACL," a Sharks statement said. McInnes will miss the remainder of the season and will most likely miss the start of the 2026 season. This is the second ACL rupture of the 31-year-old's career having done his other knee when playing for the Dragons in 2021. McInnes' injury is a massive blow to the Sharks and their hopes of winning the NRL premiership. The workhorse played State of Origin Game 1 last year having been rewarded for his defensive efforts. McInnes currently holds the record for most tackles in a single NRL game. The lock currently sits third on the list for most tackles this season. Teammate Blayke Brailey currently leads the way. Tellingly, coach Fitzgibbon has never selected another current player at lock in a premiership game, while having McInnes available. The coach relies on his captain, but admitted it was an opportunity for someone else to stamp their mark. "It'll be an opportunity for someone else to step up as a leader," Fitzgibbon said when expecting McInnes would miss the remainder of the season. Unfortunately, the Sharks will also finish their regular season without second-rower Briton Nikora after the star copped a three-game ban last week. Horrible news with scans confirming Cameron McInnes suffered an ACL rupture in Round surgery & 9 months recovery - is the 2nd ACL reconstruction of McInnes' career. Likely to have a delayed start to season 2026 which kicks off in 7 months least the 13th ACL… — NRL PHYSIO (@nrlphysio) August 18, 2025 Sharks' NRL final hopes take huge blow The Sharks snapped their finals losing streak last year having defeated the Cowboys in the semi-finals. However, they went on to lose to Penrith 26-6 in the preliminary finals. This means the Sharks have only won one game in their last nine finals appearances. And the side sitting in seventh will be hoping this year is different as they make a late push up the ladder. The Sharks have the opportunity to still reach the top four in 2025 with two wins from their next two games. Fitzgibbon's men have a bye this round, which will see them gain two points and momentarily jump into fourth depending on other results. And Fitzgibbon will be forced to select a new captain for the run home. Hynes has filled in as captain before, while Teig Wilton has done the same in recent seasons. Although Fitzgibbon's first decision will be who will replace McInnes. Hohepa Huru could move straight from the bench and into the starting side at 13, while fans might be excited to see Jesse Colquhoun take up the role for the remaining few games of the regular season. Unfortunate news for Cam McInnes I believe its time to make Jesse Colhoooon our starting 13In fact id also name him captain Id even re name the club as the Cronulla Colhoooons Go all in — SuthoDan (@suthodan) August 17, 2025 The Cam McInnes injury is just starting to kick in for me. From a team and individual perspective. I'm a big admirer of his work, and him as a person. I wish him all the best 🦈 #UpUp — SharkCast 🦈 (@sharkcastpod) August 16, 2025

Mark Carroll's message to Jake Trbojevic as Manly advise veteran to make vital call

Sea Eagles officials have reportedly told Jake Trbojevic to take the rest of the season off after his latest concussion following Manly legend Mark Carroll admitting he is concerned over the star's wellbeing. Trbojevic did not play in his side's 26-12 loss to the Wests Tigers on the weekend with Manly's defeat just about ruling them out of finals footy. Trbojevic was sitting out due to the 11-day concussion protocol after suffering a head knock against the Raiders a week earlier. Unfortunately for Trbojevic, this was his third serious concussion across the last four months. And Channel Nine reporter Danny Weidler has claimed Manly officials are urging Trbojevic to sit out the remaining three games of the season. With Manly needing results to go there way to make finals footy, plus most likely needing to win their three remaining games, it appears their season is coming to a close. And officials clearly want Trbojevic to give his body a rest considering the concerns around the fan favourite. The 31-year-old is likely set to take a pay cut to remain at the Sea Eagles beyond his current contract, but is a popular figure among the fans and other players. And while his season could be over, fans just want the best for the Manly superstar and that includes former forward Carroll. Last week, Carroll spoke to the and said he reached out to Trbojevic amid the concern surrounding his future in the game. "Concussions stay in your body. I look at Jake, he is one of the most technical defenders I've seen since Steve Menzies," Carroll told the publication. "But this game of rugby league... you don't realise until you retire the effects these concussions have had on you. You can't say (he should) retire, but hopefully it doesn't get to the stage where he has to be medically retired." Carroll has spoken publicly about his battle with suspected CTE following his footy career. And the Manly legend admitted he has concerns over Trbojevic and Roosters forward Victor Radley. The Roosters star has suffered a number of concussions in 2025 and there are growing concerns over his wellbeing and future in the game. LATEST. Manly officials say it's their preference that Jake Trbojevic takes the rest of the year off after a seriesof head knocks. @NRLonNine @9NewsSyd — Danny Weidler (@Danny_Weidler) August 18, 2025 Mark Carroll urges change to NRL concussion rule Carroll has led calls for the NRL to increase the stand down period for concussion protocols. The current rules force a player to stand-down for a minimum 11 days if they are concussed. But the former Manly star said players should be recovering for a much longer period. Earlier this year, the Melbourne Storm opted to give Will Warbrick extended time off after his latest concussion incident. Warbrick is yet to return to NRL footy since his round four game, but has returned to Melbourne Storm training. The Roosters have acted when it comes to their players copping repeated head knocks and concerns. Former captain Boyd Cordner retired early due to a number of head knocks, while Jake Friend also did the same. Sharks star Dale Finucane also retired prematurely because of similar concerns. "It's pretty tough, obviously being on the field watching it happen is very confronting. Jake being my brother-in-law, I care for him so much," Waddell said. "I know he's in good hands. Hopefully we see him back this year. His welfare comes first."

Maguire could be forced to drop Broncos and Origin ace after concerning scenes

Broncos great Corey Parker has suggested Michael Maguire could look at giving Patrick Carrigan a rest leading up to the NRL finals after claims his form has dipped. Maguire took over the Broncos at the start of the season and made the bold call to move Carrigan to prop with Kobe Hetherington switching to starting lock. Although the switch did not work with Carrigan and Payne Haas shouldering too much of the grunt work in the forward pack. The Broncos lost five in a row towards the middle of the season and Maguire opted to switch Carrigan back to lock in round 14. The move initially helped the Broncos and Carrigan was selected at lock for Queensland in State of Origin Game 1. But Billy Slater opted to make a change for Game 2 and dropped Carrigan to the bench in a shock move. The selection worked with Carrigan introduced when fatigue started to kick-in. Carrigan only played 33 minutes in Game 2 for Queensland, which saw Melbourne Storm star Trent Loriero play the majority of the game. And Slater may have been on to something at the time. The rigours of NRL footy could be taking its toll on Carrigan who was not at his industrial best against the Dolphins in his side's vital 38-28 win on the weekend. While Reece Walsh stole the show, Carrigan played 61 minutes and made 35 tackles. But he also only contributed 98 metres, which was significantly down from his season's average. He also conceded a penalty and a ruck infringement. While Carrigan's ball playing is valued at lock, the 27-year-old hasn't scored in 2025. A NRL fan called SEN Radio and claimed Carrigan was not playing his best footy in recent weeks. Parker defended Carrigan, but claimed the Queensland forward might need a rest to freshen up those legs if he is going to rediscover his best form. "To be fair, and in Pat Carrigan's defence, he has been up for a long period of time. Maybe he needs a rest. Origin and the not your typical, what we have seen from Pat over recent years," Parker said on SEN Radio. "His standard is very high. But I think if we can get a little bit of rest into Pat and move him onto the semi-final, it should work in our favour." While Carrigan's dip could be down to fatigue, Slater's decision to revert the Broncos forward to the bench in a unfamiliar role might raise some eyebrows heading into the finals. And Maguire would be aware of his team's intensity heading into the final three games of the season. Pat Carrigan's regression this season should probably be talked about more — Rhys 🇦🇺❗️ (@SulloReport) August 16, 2025 Michael Maguire's issue with resting Patrick Carrigan Unfortunately for Maguire, resting Carrigan might not be easy with three games left. The Broncos are sixth on 30 points, but are only four points off the Dolphins in ninth. Two losses and the Broncos are facing a battle to remain in the top eight. The Broncos play a crucial clash against the Storm in round 27. Instead, Maguire might be forced to manage Carrigan's minutes going forward if his team build a lead. The Broncos already carry a brutal injury toll with Adam Reynolds, Ezra Mam and Selwyn Cobbo all going down injured against the Storm two weeks ago. RELATED: Family first as Cameron Smith makes major career decision Fans' telling response after Channel 9's divisive post-game move Although Carrigan claimed a rest after the Origin period did help him feel refreshed. Speaking after Queensland won the series, Carrigan said a few days off helped him reset for NRL footy. "Having won this series, you're always a little bit fresher," he said at the time. "I've just learned over the past couple of years that it's an opportunity to let yourself refresh. I was a bit guilty (in 2024) of just trying to double down and dive back into things. "Madge (Maguire) gave us five or six days off, and that was really good to bring me back level-headed and back to my focus here. I feel really good." And maybe Maguire will look to hand Carrigan less game time to manage the body and feel fresh again.
