Pahang to expand extreme outdoor activities to develop resilient youth
KUANTAN: The Pahang government will expand its extreme outdoor activities to produce highly resilient youths, said state Communications and Multimedia, Youth, Sports and Non-Governmental Organisation Committee chairman Fadzli Mohamad Kamal.
He added that they have sought the leadership of the Pahang Youth Council to study a module which focuses on this initiative.
'We will have a retreat next month for youth backup leaders and, through this programme, we want to produce youth with high resilience,' he told reporters after launching the Pahang Youth Festival in conjunction with the 2025 National Youth Day celebration here today.
He also upheld the decree of the Sultan of Pahang, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, for the 'Mara Lasak' Programme to be implemented statewide.
He added that they are targeting 1,000 youths to take part in the programme when it is implemented in Jelai early next year.
'The 'Mara Lasak' Programme was last implemented in Ulu Dong, Raub, involving a 10-kilometre (km) run through various obstacles, such as forest trails, river crossings and hilly terrain. That first 'Mara Lasak' programme was participated by 50 teams, each comprising 10 members,' he said.
Elaborating on the May 16-18 Pahang Youth Festival, Fadzli said this year's celebration was very encouraging among youths from diverse backgrounds.
'The state government is very serious about implementing such programmes to draw close to as many youths as possible statewide. We have prepared over 50 programmes throughout this festival, involving 13 main segments covering sports, culture, entrepreneurship and so on,' he said.
Meanwhile, Public Service director-general Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz said a total of 2,500 participants, comprising civil servants and members of the local community, took part in the 20th Public Service 'Majlis Amanat Perdana' (MAPPA XX) Run today.
The Tengku Mahkota of Pahang, Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah also joined the programme, which began at 7.30 am.
Wan Ahmad Dahlan said the MAPPA XX 2025 Run tour series kicked off in Pahang and will continue to be held in Penang (June 28), Sarawak (July 6), Sabah (July 12), Putrajaya (Aug 15) and Johor (Aug 16).
'This programme showcases the healthy lifestyle that needs to be practised by not only civil servants but by everyone in the country,' he said after officiating the launch of the MAPPA XX 2025 Run.

(AFP pic) MANILA : Philippine medical authorities today warned of a looming 'public health emergency' as HIV infections have soared this year, with young males especially hard-hit. On average, 57 new cases a day were tallied in the country of 117 million people over the first three months of 2025, a 50% jump from a year earlier, health department data shows. 'We now have the highest number of new cases here in the Western Pacific,' health secretary Ted Herbosa said in a video message released today. 'What is frightening is, our youth make up many of the new cases,' he said. 'It would be in our interest to (declare) a public health emergency, a national emergency for HIV to mobilise the entire society, the whole of government to help us in this campaign to reduce the number of new HIV cases,' Herbosa added. The health department said 95% of newly reported cases were male, with 33% aged 15 to 24 and 47% aged 25 to 34. The government did not explain the causes behind the surge, which it said had set back government attempts to hit global targets set by a United Nations campaign to end the AIDS epidemic by 2030. Under Philippine law, the president can declare a health emergency if an epidemic poses a threat to national security. The start of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 was the last time that was done. Just 55% of those living with HIV in the Philippines have been diagnosed, the health department said, while only 66% of those diagnosed are on life-saving antiretroviral therapy. Sexual contact remains the predominant mode of transmission, with the bulk of cases since 2007 attributed to men having sex with men. HIV cases have been on the rise in the Philippines since 2021, with 252,800 people estimated to be living with HIV in the country by the end of this year.

[UPDATED] Khaled urges mutual respect in unity government
KUALA LUMPUR: Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said there should be mutual respect among parties in the unity government, following Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz's decision to leave Umno and express interest in joining PKR. Speaking after officiating the Malaysian Skills Diploma, Recognition of Prior Experiential Learning (RPEL) Programme and Perhebat Certificate award ceremony today, Khaled said that while the party may not stop anyone from quitting, such actions may reflect their character. "However, whatever the case, the current government was formed from a coalition of parties that agreed to establish a unity government, and as such, there should be mutual respect among the parties," he said. He also confirmed that, as far as he was aware, there had been no inter-party discussions about Tengku Zafrul's decision. When asked if Tengku Zafrul might face disciplinary actions upon returning from the Haj, Khaled pointed out that "if he has already left the party, how can disciplinary action be taken against him?" Regarding the Investment, Trade and Industry ministerial position currently held by Tengku Zafrul, Khaled made it clear that such matters are to be discussed within the party and not through the media. On Sunday, Umno information chief Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said the party's Legal Bureau has been tasked with reviewing the implications of the Anti-Party Hopping Act, including Tengku Zafrul's status as a senator, to ensure that all subsequent actions are in line with the law. On Saturday, Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said it was unethical for any party within the unity government to accept membership applications from former leaders or members of its allies. The deputy prime minister, who is also Barisan Nasional chairman, said he was not surprised by Tengku Zafrul's announcement to quit Umno and join PKR, as they had discussed the matter during a parliamentary session three months ago. Meanwhile, Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan has also urged party members and supporters to remain calm, focused, and united following Tengku Zafrul's decision to leave the party for PKR.

Ex-Foreign Ministry sec-gen Muhammad Shahrul Ikram succeeds Nazri Aziz as Malaysia's new ambassador to US
KUALA LUMPUR, June 3 — His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, presented the instrument of appointment to the new Malaysian Ambassador to the United States, Tan Sri Muhammad Shahrul Ikram Yaakob, in a ceremony at Istana Negara today. Muhammad Shahrul Ikram is the former Foreign Ministry's secretary-general. According to a post on Sultan Ibrahim's Facebook page, the ceremony was also attended by the Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Mohamad Alamin and the ministry's secretary-general Datuk Sri Amran Mohamed Zin. Muhammad Shahrul Ikram replaces Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz, whose term concluded on Feb 8. The Pahang-born Muhammad Shahrul Ikram holds a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Ecology from Universiti Malaya and has attended the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School in the US. He started his career as an Administrative and Diplomatic Officer in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1988 and served as Chairman of the Secretariat of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from Jan 6, 2019, to May 31, 2022. Throughout his 35 years in public service, Muhammad Shahrul Ikram has been posted as Malaysian Ambassador to Qatar, Malaysian Ambassador to Austria and Permanent Representative of Malaysia to the United Nations in New York. While at the Foreign Ministry, he had served as deputy secretary-general (Bilateral Relations), director-general of the Asean-Malaysia National Secretariat (during Malaysia's 2015 ASEAN Chairmanship) and Secretary of the Multilateral Political Division.
