AI, machine learning to be deployed in fight air, water, noise pollution in Delhi

The Hindu11-05-2025

The Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) is planning to use artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to optimise and extract relevant insights on air, water, and noise pollution using data from six of its existing portals, sources said.
'The idea is to help the committee interpret existing data, have the ability to compare datasets, and get predictive insights on the city's air, water and noise pollution levels, among other things,' said a highly placed source.
AI and machine learning will also be employed to create chatbots to guide and assist users on the DPCC's interactive platforms, including the Green Delhi app that allows users to lodge pollution-related complaints, the Dust Pollution Control Self Assessment portal that is used by construction agencies for self-assessment, and Online Consent Management and Monitoring System, used to seek various environment-related permissions.
Aside from these three, the other portals are run and operated by employees of the Delhi government's pollution watchdog: Continuous Emission Monitoring System, used to monitor real-time data from sewage treatment plants, Real Time Ambient Noise Monitoring Network; and Real Time Ambient Air Quality Data.
The DPCC had issued an expression of interest (EoI) in March for the project. The EoI document states that the committee 'intends to perform advanced predictive and prescriptive analytics using available data'.
The source said a firm has been selected for the project and that the finer details are being worked out.
'The company will make a software to integrate the six portals and also use it as an interface for data analytics,' the source added.

Good news for Delhiites, DTC set to resume interstate bus service, buses to connect THESE cities and religious places, minister says...

New Delhi: Good news for Delhiites as DTC is likely to once again start its interstate bus services soon. According to the reports, 100 electronic buses will run on 17 routes. These buses will not only connect some of the major cities of the neighbouring states but will also enhance Delhi's connectivity with major religious sites. Delhi Transport Minister Dr. Pankaj Kumar Singh took this key decision during the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) board meeting held on Friday. The meeting was attended by the Transport Commissioner, the DTC Chairman, and other board member officials. 100 type-3 Electronic Buses to Run During the meeting, the board informed the Transport Minister that 100 new Type-3 electric interstate buses will be operated under DTC. These buses will run on 17 routes of the neighbouring states, which will include several religious sites. The Transport Minister said that this initiative is in line with the Delhi government's 'Viksit Delhi Sankalp Patra' and the 'Green Delhi, Clean Delhi' vision. It is important to note that these DTC buses will be run by the current drivers. This will allow full utilization of the existing workforce. These interstate electric buses will also contribute to keeping the environment clean in neighboring states. During the meeting, the board members also presented a plan to the minister to increase DTC's non-fare revenue through advertisements in order to boost its overall income. Officials claimed that this initiative could potentially generate around ₹5 crore annually for DTC through advertisements. Under this plan, advertisements will be placed not only inside and outside the buses but also at bus depots, bus terminals, and bus stops.

DTC to launch 100 interstate e-buses

In a move towards sustainable mobility, the city is set to roll out 100 electric inter-state buses under the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC), with operations expected to begin soon across 17 key routes, officials said on Friday. The decision was announced on Thursday during the DTC board meeting chaired by transport minister Pankaj Kumar Singh. Several high-demand corridors connecting the capital to neighbouring states and prominent pilgrimage destinations like Haridwar, Ayodhya, Rishikesh, Meerut and Baghpat are some of the initial proposed routes, around 250 to 300 kms from Delhi. The Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) has also been consulted to check the feasibility of operating buses along these routes, said officials. The initiative aligns with the Delhi government's 'Green Delhi, Clean Delhi' campaign and the broader development blueprint under the 'Viksit Sankalp Yatra', said Singh. 'These electric inter-state buses mark a major step in our sustainable mobility agenda which will improve access to neighbouring areas and pilgrimage hubs and reduce pollution levels in Delhi,' said Singh. The new Type-3 electric buses will be operated by DTC's existing workforce, ensuring a smooth integration into current operations. Senior officials confirmed that religious routes have been prioritized to meet growing demand from commuters travelling to popular pilgrimage sites. Type-3 buses are bigger vehicles used mostly on longer routes with more seating or even sleeping space.
