Indian state blames cricket team for deadly stampede
Eleven fans were crushed to death and more than 50 wounded in a stampede near the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium after hundreds of thousands packed the streets in the southern city of Bengaluru on June 4, to welcome home their hero Virat Kohli and his RCB cricket team.
Karnataka state authorities singled out the RCB, its partners and the state cricket association for their mismanagement of the event in a report made public on Thursday.
It said organisers had not submitted a "formal request" or provided enough detail for permission to be granted for the celebrations.
"Consequently, the permission was not granted," it said.

The team went ahead with its victory parade despite police rejecting RCB's request, according to the report.
AFP has been unable to contact RCB for comment.
Four people, including a senior executive at RCB, representatives of event organisers DNA and Karnataka State Cricket Association, were detained by police in the days following the stampede.
Players were parading the trophy near the stadium a day after their win over Punjab Kings in the final in Ahmedabad when the stampede occurred.
The dead were aged between 14 and 29.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi called it "absolutely heartrending" and Kohli, who top-scored in the final, was "at a loss for words" after it unfolded.
India coach Gautam Gambhir said he was never a fan of roadshows, and the authorities should not have allowed the mass celebrations if they weren't prepared.

Messi and Alba suspended for one match for missing MLS All-Star
25 July 2025 22:28 NEW YORK (Reuters) Lionel Messi has been suspended for one game after sitting out the MLS All-Star Game without prior approval, the league said on Inter Miami forward and his teammate, Jordi Alba, did not compete on Wednesday despite not being injured, even though they were included in the All-Star roster."Per league rules, any player who does not participate in the All-Star Game without prior approval from the league is ineligible to compete in their club's next match," MLS said in a statement. The suspension will see Messi, the league's main attraction, miss Inter Miami's match against FC Cincinnati on Saturday. Cincinnati lead the Eastern Conference standings. Messi has scored 18 goals so far this season."I know Lionel Messi loves this league. I don't think there's a player - or anyone - who has done more for Major League Soccer than Messi. I fully understand, respect, and admire his commitment to Inter Miami, and I respect his decision," MLS Commissioner Don Garber said in a statement."Unfortunately, we have a long-standing policy regarding participation in the All-Star Game, and we had to enforce it. It was a very difficult decision."All-Star competitions are a mainstay of North American sports, where the men's "Big Four" leagues use the exhibitions to boost their players' profiles, but they are a rarity in professional soccer."We're going to take a hard look at the policy moving forward. I'm committed to working with our players to determine how the rule should evolve," said rested this week, according to Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano."Look, players always have discomfort, especially when they play every three days," Mascherano was quoted as saying by ESPN.

Bengaluru stampede: M Chinnaswamy Stadium deemed 'unsuitable, unsafe' for large-scale events
The M Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru has been deemed "unsuitable and unsafe" for large-scale events, according to the findings of Justice John Michael Cunha Commission. The panel was appointed by the Karnataka government to investigate the July 4 stampede that occurred near the stadium during the victory celebrations of Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title win, which left 11 dead and over 50 injured. As per ESPNCricinfo, the commission's report stated that the venue's "design and structure" are inherently "unsuitable and unsafe" for large-scale gatherings. It also warned that the organisation of big-attendance events at the stadium will pose "unacceptable risks to public safety, urban mobility, and emergency preparedness." The report, which has been shared with the Karnataka government and accessed by ESPNCricinfo, indicted RCB, the franchise's event partners DNA Entertainment and the state's cricket governing body, Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) for their role in the stampede which took place on July 4, just the day after team's maiden IPL win, which ended an 18-year-long wait. The report cited "systematic limitations" and "strongly recommended" that large-scale events be relocated to venues that are "better suited" for them. "Any future venue should adhere to international standards," the report stated as quoted by ESPNCricinfo. This leaves matches being held at the stadium during the near future in doubt, as it is set to host the opening game and the semifinal of the ICC Women's ODI Cricket World Cup, starting from September 30 to November 2. Also, KSCA stated that its state T20 League, the Maharaja Trophy, will be played behind closed doors, starting from August 11. Stadium requirements The report also outlined several requirements that the Chinnaswammy Stadium, among other older venues in the country (built in 1974), does not have a provision for, like "purpose-built queuing and circulation areas separated from public roads, sufficient entry and exit gates to manage mass ingress and egress, integrated access to public transport and nearby tourist hubs, comprehensive emergency evacuation plans in line with global safety norms and adequate parking and drop-off facilities to accommodate large volumes of attendees." The panel also recommended action against the chief of KSCA, Raghuram Bhat, ex-secretary A Shankar, ex-treasurer ES Jairam, with the latter two resigning citing "moral responsibility" after the incident, RCB vice-president Rajesh Menon, DNA Entertainment Networks MD T Venkat Vardhan and VP Sunil Mathur. It also held police officers B Dayananda, Vikash Kumar, Shekhar HT, C Balakrishna and AK Girish, all removed by the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah following the incident, as responsible for being part of the arrangement. The Karnataka government, which also celebrated the title win with players in a felicitation event on the steps of Vidhana Soudha, is expected to decide on recommendations during the next cabinet meeting, as reported by ESPNCricinfo.

US analysis found no evidence of Hamas aid theft in Gaza
An internal US government review has found no evidence of systematic theft of US-funded humanitarian aid by Hamas, contradicting a claim frequently made by Israel and its allies in Washington. The analysis, revealed exclusively by Reuters on Friday, was conducted by a bureau within the US Agency for International Development (USAID). It examined 156 incidents of theft or loss of US-funded supplies reported by partner organisations between October 2023 and May 2025 and found 'no reports alleging Hamas' had benefited from the aid. Instead, 44 of the incidents of stolen or lost aid were found to be either directly or indirectly caused by the Israeli military. This included 11 attributed to direct Israeli actions, such as air strikes, and others linked to the military compelling aid organisations to use delivery routes known to carry a high risk of theft or looting. New MEE newsletter: Jerusalem Dispatch Sign up to get the latest insights and analysis on Israel-Palestine, alongside Turkey Unpacked and other MEE newsletters Sixty-three of the incidents were attributed to unknown perpetrators, 35 to armed actors, 25 to unarmed individuals, 11 to corrupt subcontractors, five to corrupt aid group personnel and six to 'others' under unclear circumstances. The armed actors 'included gangs and other miscellaneous individuals who may have had weapons', said one slide of the analysis. Palestinians have accused the Israel-aligned Abu Shabab gang of involvement in the theft of aid. Another slide said "a review of all 156 incidents found no affiliations with" groups designated by the US as foreign terrorist organisations, including Hamas. The 156 reports were filed by UN agencies and other groups working in Gaza, as a condition of receiving US aid funds. The study was conducted by the Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance of USAID. A State Department spokesperson disputed the findings, telling Reuters that there was video evidence of Hamas looting aid. It did not provide the footage. 'Aid corruption' The spokesperson also accused international aid groups of covering up 'aid corruption'. The analysis was shared with USAID's Office of Inspector General and State Department officials involved in Middle East policy, sources told Reuters. A source familiar with the study said the absence of systematic theft by Hamas of aid 'does not mean that diversion has not occurred'. US ignored report saying GHF was not fit to deliver aid in Gaza: Report Read More » Israel controls all access to humanitarian aid into Gaza and has imposed a near-total blockade on the enclave since March. Officials in Israel have long claimed that Hamas steals food supplies from the UN and other organisations to boost its coffers and resells goods to civilians. The Israeli military told Reuters its allegations were based on intelligence that Hamas seized aid cargoes by 'both covertly and overtly' embedding themselves on trucks. Israel has not made any such intelligence report public. The USAID report casts even further doubt on the unverified allegations that were used as part of the rationale to set up the controversial US and Israel-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). The UN says that more than 1,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces while seeking aid supplies, mostly near the highly militarised GHF sites. The UN and other major international aid groups have refused US and Israeli calls to cooperate with GHF, stating that the organisation violates international humanitarian principles of neutrality. Israel's siege on Gaza since 2 March has blocked the entry of humanitarian supplies by the UN and its partner organisations to the enclave, bringing the 2.1 million population to the brink of famine. At least 115 Palestinians, including 80 children, have died of starvation since March, including 15 who died of malnutrition on Monday, according to the Palestinian health ministry. More than 59,000 Palestinians in Gaza have been killed by Israeli forces since October 2023 and over 142,000 others have been wounded.
