MALAYSIA has much to look forward to in 2025 despite global uncertainties.
HSBC's Asean economist Yun Liu says she has reduced Malaysia's gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate to 4.2% from 4.8% earlier this year because of external trade volatility. (Malaysia posted a GDP growth of 4.4% for the first quarter).

VCI Global to launch QuantGold encryption platform at Asean AI Summit 2025 in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 — VCI Global Limited is set to unveil QuantGold Data, a military-grade encryption platform aimed at strengthening data sovereignty across the region. The launch will take place at the Asean AI Summit Malaysia 2025, which will be opened by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Jane Teh, the company's Chief AI Security Officer, is expected to say that secure data control will be essential as data becomes the 'new currency' in the digital economy. QuantGold is designed to address cloud dependency by enabling full local deployment with complete jurisdiction control. Its encryption and air-gapped model are projected to reduce vulnerabilities and enhance resilience against external and insider threats. The platform is also expected to allow governments and organisations to monetise encrypted datasets without revealing raw information. Jane Teh is likely to emphasise that Asean must move away from reliance on foreign tech giants to secure its AI future. The initiative will target AI-powered cybercrimes, which Bloomberg estimates caused over US$9.5 trillion in global damages in 2024.

SME Bank empowers over 5,730 entrepreneurs in first six months of 2025

KUALA LUMPUR: Small Medium Enterprise Development Bank Malaysia (SME Bank), a subsidiary of Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Bhd, has empowered 5,735 entrepreneurs in the first half of 2025. This is more than double the 2,225 entrepreneurs supported during the same period in 2024. Acting president and chief executive officer Datuk Dr Mohammad Hardee Ibrahim said the achievement was supported by the bank's capacity building and training arm the Centre for Entrepreneur Development and Research (CEDAR). Among the beyond financing programmes entrusted to SME Bank is the Maju Usahawan Madani programme, which was introduced to strengthen the MSME ecosystem through targeted capacity-building, he said in a statement. Mohammad Hardee said between January 2025 and March 2026, the programme aims to assist 3,000 micro entrepreneurs. As of June, a total of 1,632 entrepreneurs benefited from the initiative, including MSMEs from the Bumiputera community, youth, rural areas, B40 income group, Asnaf, senior citizens and persons with disabilities. CEDAR has also been appointed Asean's Centre of Excellence for MSMEs in Green Transition, a recognition listed among the Priority Economic Deliverables for Malaysia's Asean chairmanship in 2025. "This milestone affirms SME Bank's leadership in shaping a more sustainable and inclusive future for enterprises, both at home and across Asean," he said. Meanwhile, the Halal Entrepreneurship Development Programme has supported over 400 participants since its launch in 2023, while the Program Pembangunan Kapasiti Vendor has onboarded 109 vendors with RM15.87 million incentives approved. The Business Exports Programme has facilitated RM191.93 million in export sales through the onboarding of 98 companies across key global markets. The programme is a structured intervention programme funded by the Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development Ministry and in collaboration with the Malaysia External Trade Development Corp. The programme has also generated 182 new jobs, enabled 314 entrepreneurs to adopt new technologies and facilitated the creation of 224 business networks. SME Bank said it will continue to play a pivotal role in advancing the MSME agenda with over RM1 billion strategic initiatives mandated to the bank under the National Budget 2025. This includes delivering both financing and beyond financing support across key strategic sectors such as Bumiputera entrepreneurship, technology and innovation, ESG adoption, the halal economy and tourism.

Vietnam's durian featured at first Asean–China Durian Festival

BEIJING: Vietnam showcased durian and related products at the first-ever Asean–China Durian Festival held in Beijing on August 9 by the Asean–China Centre (ACC) and the embassies of Asean member states. The Vietnamese booth featured fresh durian, durian ice cream, durian cakes and other fruits such as dragon fruit and passion fruit, attracting strong interest from Beijing residents and Asean diplomats. ACC Secretary-General Shi Zhongjun described durian as the 'king of tropical fruits', whose rich, mellow flavour reflects the long-standing and increasingly close China–Asean relationship. He noted that promoting agricultural cooperation is a priority for both sides and a central task of ACC in recent years. Asean has been China's largest trading partner for five consecutive years, while China has remained Asean's largest partner for 16 years. In 2024, bilateral trade reached 6.99 trillion yuan (about US$973 billion), with agricultural products accounting for nearly 10 per cent and continuing to grow. Asean tropical fruits such as durian, mangosteen, longan and dragon fruit are now household favourites in China thanks to faster customs clearance, competitive prices and diverse distribution channels. Chinese apples, pears, modern farming equipment and green agricultural technologies are likewise supporting agricultural upgrades in Asean countries. Vietnamese Ambassador to China Phạm Thanh Bình said durian is increasingly popular among Chinese consumers and is a key high-quality agricultural export for Vietnam. Through the festival, Vietnam aims to promote its premium durian to local and international audiences in China, hoping to reach more consumers, he told the Vietnam News Agency. He added that the event also provides a platform for Vietnam to exchange, learn and share market expansion experiences, strengthening Asean–China cooperation to secure a strong position for Asean durian in this vast market. - Vietnam News/ANN
