Dave Davies on how You Really Got Me saved The Kinks, those Jimmy Page rumors – and what he really thought of Van Halen's cover

But right now he's busier than usual, promoting The Journey – Part 3, which documents The Kinks' late era. Though the band is best known for You Really Got Me, Waterloo Sunset and Lola from the '60s and '70s, the new set reminds us that late-stage cuts like Come Dancing, Destroyer and Better Things have earned pride of place in the band's catalog, too. 'We had a great comeback,' Davies reflects. 'We had many comebacks! It was like a renaissance with that era. There's so much stuff there. At that point we were playing more live shows. We had new songs, new management, and there was a lot of stuff to go through. It was like a rebirth in America. We were blossoming.' It's no revelation that Davies is a proverbial godfather of distortion, inspiring players who came after him by using new levels of gain, distortion, and fuzz without the help of stompboxes. He achieved his sound by slashing the cone of his amp's speaker, leading to a gnarly, garage-meets-heavy rock tone that, in some ways, launched hard rock and heavy metal. That might sound hyperbolic – but for Davies it's just the truth. 'Well, yes, we did do that,' he states proudly. 'And we did it without any pedals. It just happened, you know? It was really spontaneous. I think I'm most proud of You Really Got Me. It was a great song, and it remains a great song. And it really had a great attitude for the time.' What's your perspective on how The Kinks had impacted heavy rock music and distorted guitar after you tore up your amp's speaker cone? 'I just did that, and it came out as You Really Got Me. Man, we didn't know, but it worked.' What prompted you to tear the cone? 'If I knew I'd tell you! I came up with it one afternoon, and that sound came about. It was like a piece of magic.' There's been a lot of speculation over the years that Jimmy Page recorded the solo for You Really Got Me. 'It's quite ridiculous. It's totally ridiculous that someone can merely try to take credit. It was me – it was a Kinks song. It was The Kinks' sound on a Kinks record. So of course I recorded the solo.' Have you ever spoken to Jimmy Page or session engineer Eddie Kramer about the claims? 'I've never talked to Jimmy about it, no. But I have talked to Eddie, and he denies Jimmy did it.' Was the You Really Got Me solo off the cuff, or did you plan it out? 'It was probably off the cuff. There's really no way one could plan that. I don't remember the gear; it all happened so quickly. We were thankful for it because we maybe wouldn't have been The Kinks if we hadn't found that sound. The albums hadn't been doing well; we weren't doing great, really. And suddenly, with You Really Got Me, we kind of surprised people.' What were your thoughts on the Van Halen version of You Really Got Me from 1978? 'Well, I thought it was quite funny-sounding! It was very good as well, though. I've gotten used to it!' Did you ever talk to Eddie Van Halen about how you influenced him? 'Sadly I never got to meet him. He had great success with that version of You Really Got Me. He even played it on tour. Prime Video's ‘Reacher' Follow-Up Premieres to Lackluster Rotten Tomatoes Rating
There's no denying that Alan Ritchson's role as Jack Reacher in the Prime Video series has led to immense success for the streaming platform. Already on its way to a fourth season, Reacher has held its own with a promising 96% Rotten Tomatoes score. While the series, based on the Lee Child books, has no plans of stopping anytime soon, Prime Video released Butterfly in a hopeful attempt to capture the same audience. After its Aug. 13 premiere on the streaming platform, Butterfly has received less-than-desirable reviews with only a 72% score on Rotten Tomatoes. It's possible the series needs more time for word of mouth to grow and for audiences to catch up. "Though the series has all of the components that make for a compelling thriller, it's more smoke and mirrors than gritty character-driven material," commented Variety in their review of the series. Some of the reviews aren't 100% negative, with the Los Angeles Times commenting, "The series, which is no worse and somewhat better than 'perfectly fine,' certainly has its points, Kim and Hardesty not the least among them." "While the series, created by Steph Cha and Ken Woodruff, never quite takes that intriguing premise to its fullest potential, its mix of sentiment and thrills makes for a pleasantly innocuous addition to the platform's ever-growing catalogue," reviewed The Hollywood Reporter. Butterfly is a six-episode spy thriller based on the Boom! Studio graphic novel series created by Arash Amel. Lost alum Daniel Dae Kim stars as David Jung, a former U.S. intelligence operative who faked his death nine years ago to protect his family. Now living in South Korea, his life is upended when he becomes determined to reunite with his daughter, Rebecca (Reina Hardesty). The only problem is that Rebecca has been tasked with eliminating David, unaware that her father is alive. The Devil Wears Prada is a wildly successful book-to-screen adaptation, and is arguably one of Anne Hathaway's best movies. As such, fans were thrilled when it was confirmed a long-awaited sequel was coming, with both Meryl Streep and Hathaway returning to their roles. The latter actress recently offered the first look at Andy Sachs' return, and I need another fashion montage ASAP. What we know about The Devil Wars Prada 2 is limited, but fans were sold thanks to its returning actors. On top of the story, moviegoers are hyped to see the fits of fashion in the follow-up movie. We all remember Andy' fashion montage to Madonna's "Vogue" in the original, and Hathaway posted on Instagram revealing one of her many looks for the sequel. Hathaway is looking super chic in this outfit, which makes me think that Andy has retained what she learned from working at Runway all those years ago. Now I want to know what Stanley Tucci's Nigel would think about this particular look. Hopefully, we get plenty of his commentary in the sequel. The cast of The Devil Wears Prada 2 is coming together, including a number of iconic actors from the original film. While the sequel's story is currently a mystery, that hasn't stopped hype from growing. And once we get to see Meryl back as Miranda Priestly, I have a feeling the internet is going to explode. There are two sequel novels already released, so there will presumably be some content to farm from the source material. Although I also wouldn't be surprised if a new story comes together, one that can properly highlight returning actors like Hathaway, Streep, Tucci, and Emily Blunt. On the other hand, a number of the Devil Wears Prada cast aren't expected to return for the sequel. Arguably the biggest absence is Adrian Grenier's Nate Cooper (aka the real villain of the original). Still, there are some exciting newcomers joining the burgeoning franchise such as Conrad Ricamora, Lucy Liu, Justin Theroux and Kenneth Branagh, who is playing Miranda's new husband. Photography for The Devil Wears Prada 2 began June 30th, so they're about one month into production. As such, Hathaway has probably worn plenty of gorgeous costumes for the fashion-focused sequel. And I'm going to need a sneak peek of Miranda Priestly sooner rather than later. All will be revealed when The Devil Wears Prada 2 hits theaters on May 1st, 2026. Since it's not on the 2025 movie release list, fans like me might have to be patient while we wait for more information/footage from the project.
