Smylie smiley again: Aussie starts well in Denmark
But the man who was at that point setting the pace in the tour's Race to Dubai Order of Merit yet has since slumped to 27th -- albeit still the top Australian -- has made an encouraging start to the Danish Championship as he looks for only his second top-10 finish in 2025.
Smylie, who finished eighth at the New Zealand Open in March, had four birdies in his opening three-under par 68 at the Fureso Golf Klub in Copenhagen on Thursday, leaving him tied for 15th on a day when Marco Penge set a new course record 64, a seven-under figure that left him leading by two.
The Englishman produced a blemish-free round, recording an eagle and five birdies.
It was only last October when Penge had to birdie the 18th hole during the second round of the Genesis Championship in South Korea to save his card for this season, and he hasn't looked back since.
The 27-year-old has enjoyed a breakout year in which he's lifted his maiden title at the Hainan Classic and finished in the top 30 in six of his last seven starts.
Most of the home attention was on local Hojgaard twins - and they let no-one down.
Rasmus Hojgaard carded eight birdies, a double bogey and one dropped shot to surge into a share of second place at five under alongside Francesco Molinari, the 2018 Open champion, who chipped in for eagle to reach that mark.
Hojgaard's identical twin brother, Nicolai, holed out for two eagles in the space of three holes on the back nine during his 68.
Jeremy Paul, Canadian Aaron Cockerill and Scotland's Marc Warren also carded opening rounds of 66 to sit two adrift of Penge.
Smylie wasn't the only Australian to finish in the red, with Jason Scrivener opening up with a one-under 70.
Brett Coletta had a level-par 71, Danny List was one over and Daniel Gale two over, while the biggest disappointment was a 78 for David Micheluzzi, fresh from his top-10 finish at the Nexo Championship in Scotland.

She's a serious catch! WA's Fish stars on AFLW debut
Zippy Fish is the owner of one of the best monikers in football, but the WA product has proved there is more to her game than her name with a show-stealing performance on AFLW debut for Sydney. The East Fremantle product gathered 25 disposals and notched a game-high 511 metres gained as the Swans started their campaign with a 20-point victory over Richmond on Friday night. Despite owning a standout junior resume, including starring in the Sharks' 2023 WAFLW premiership win as a 17-year-old and breaking the competition's single-game record for disposals with 39 last year, Fish slipped to the fifth pick of the most recent draft. She previously would have had the choice between nominating solely for Fremantle or West Coast or make herself available to all 18 clubs, but last year's draft was the first to be fully national. The performance was the latest in a series of standout moments for the 2024 draft class in its first game at the top level — No.7 selection Lucia Painter produced a three-goal third quarter in West Coast's victory Gold Coast, while top pick Ash Centra claimed a brilliant contested mark and slotted her first major at the level in Collingwood's loss to Carlton. 'Even though she's playing down back, she's able to do some some things that not many kids are at that age,' Hunter said. 'People often don't have that when they're 18 years old — ball in hand, like, it can often look a bit jittery and you've still got to get used to the speed of everything but it really hasn't been the case. 'She's probably one of our best, ball-in-hand, already at 18, which is obviously something that's highly regarded for years to come. If you're doing that at 18, who knows where it can end up but she looks right at home. 'It seems odd to me that it seems to be this comfortable for her at 18 years-old.' Another hugely talented West Australian, Molly O'Hehir, selected two spots higher than Fish at No.3 last year, is set to debut for Melbourne in their clash with Western Bulldogs on Saturday.

Roar young gun, golden boot secure MLS transfers
Rising Australian defender Lucas Herrington has secured a transfer from Brisbane to Colorado while the A-League's reigning golden boot winner has also moved to MLS in the United States. The Roar were claiming a record, undisclosed fee for U20 Asian Cup winner Herrington on Thursday. The 18-year-old will remain with Brisbane until joining the Rapids in January. The deal comes a day after Adelaide United striker Archie Goodwin, 20, secured a move to Charlotte. "I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at the club; to have come through the academy from Under 13s makes it even more special," Brisbane native Herrington, who played 17 games in his debut season last year, said. "Over the past seven years, I have met some amazing people, from management to coaches to players and of course, the fans." Goodwin scored an equal competition-high 13 goals in 26 appearances for the Reds after joining them from the Newcastle Jets last season. "Archie is coming off a strong first season with Adelaide United at just 20 years old and we can't wait to see him carry that momentum with us," Charlotte FC general manager Zoran Krneta said. "His awareness within the box, willingness to run and attack spaces are a few of the top qualities we saw that made us want to pursue him. "We want to see Archie develop and create good competition within our club." West Coast Eagles recall Noah Long and Bailey Williams for Western Bulldogs clash
West Coast have recalled small forward Noah Long on the back of an impressive game in the WAFL, while they've resisted the urge to recall veteran Jayden Hunt for their clash against the Western Bulldogs. The Eagles have made three changes, handing a debut to mid-season draftee Jacob Newton while also recalling Long and forward-ruck Bailey Williams for Sunday's game at Marvel Stadium. Captain Liam Duggan (suspension) has been joined by injured pair Archer Reid (toe) and Tom Gross (calf) in coming out of the side that lost to ladder-leaders Adelaide by only nine points at Optus Stadium at the weekend. Hunt was the travelling emergency for the clash against the Bulldogs, having not played since he was the sub in the round 16 loss to Collingwood. The 30-year-old has played five games in the WAFL and averaged 18 disposals across half-back but has been overlooked despite the Eagles needing another defender in the absence of Duggan and with mid-season recruit Tom McCarthy moving to the midfield. It could be a big blow to Hunt's chances for a new contract given he is yet to re-sign beyond this season, having joined the Eagles as a free agent from Melbourne after the 2022 season. Long has played only eight games this season and none since the round 18 defeat to Port Adelaide when he had four possessions as the sub. The 20-year-old has struggled for form in his third season at the Eagles, having only played seven games last season because of a knee injury. Long has forced his way back into the team on the back of three goals from 18 disposals and seven tackles in the Eagles reserves' loss to East Fremantle last Saturday. Williams comes in to help Matt Flynn take on All-Australian contender Tim English, replacing impressive second year tall Reid. The 25-year-old played the last of his 14 games for the season in the Eagles' 83-point defeat to Melbourne less than a fortnight ago when he went against Demons superstar Max Gawn solo. Emergencies Malakai Champion and Jack Williams have been left in Perth. Luke Beveridge has made only two changes to the Bulldogs' team, naming debutant Jordan Croft as well as mature age recruit Sam Davidson, with Laith Vandermeer (concussion) and Caleb Poulter (omitted) out of the team.
