Meet Jagmeet Singh, Canada's first ethnic minority politician and New Democratic Party leader

Time of India28-04-2025

Canada never had an ethnic minority politician to lead a major federal party in Canada until
Jagmeet Singh
, a criminal defence lawyer from Ontario, stepped into federal politics in 2017. At a time when his party is trying to regain momentum after years of supporting the Liberal minority government, the
New Democratic Party
leader has entered his third national election.

However, polls show the lowest level of support for his left-wing party in recent years, which puts an additional burden on him in this election.
Singh was born in Scarborough, Ontario, to parents who immigrated from Punjab in India. He went on to study biology at the University of Western Ontario and law at York University's Osgoode Hall Law School before becoming a lawyer in Toronto. He spent time in Windsor, Ontario, and Michigan as a child, where he faced racism.

A similar incident happened after entering politics when, in 2019, a voter asked him to remove his turban. Singh responded at the time by saying that Canadians look different but share common values.
A practising Sikh and a former Ontario provincial legislator, Singh entered politics in 2017 and soon became the leader of the NDP. In 2019, he won his first seat in Canada's Parliament through a by-election in Burnaby South, a district located just east of Vancouver.
Live Events
In 2022, he led his party into an agreement with the then-Prime Minister Trudeau's party. Singh, in return, secured commitments for a national dental care program and a framework for pharma care.
But the agreement ended in 2024 when he accused the Liberals of prioritizing corporate interests and profits over workers and societal welfare. After ending the agreement, the NDP became the last of Canada's three main opposition leaders to break with Trudeau.
A major setback came in his political career in late 2023, when he considered leaving politics after he was warned about death threats. But after discussions with his family members and advisors, he chose to continue his political journey.
At 46, he now leads the NDP into the 2025 election, and he stands against corporate power and for promises that only the NDP could be trusted to look out for ordinary Canadians. Singh also attacked the Liberal Party's Mark Carney and US President Donald Trump for shifting focus from relevant domestic issues.
As a former human rights activist, he pledges to forgive student loan debt and ensure that Canada's carbon emissions are reduced. He also promises universal prescription drug coverage.
Beyond politics, Singh has built a strong personal brand due to his calm attitude and well-tailored suits, which have largely contributed to his huge popularity on platforms such as TikTok.

Spokane Police arrest over 30 during immigration protests amid ICE detention dispute

Immigration protests in Spokane lead to dozens of arrests Two major immigration protests in Spokane on Wednesday, June 11, led to more than 30 arrests and the imposition of a citywide curfew, following a confrontation between demonstrators and federal immigration authorities. The unrest centered around the detention of two asylum seekers at a local Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office. Mayor Lisa Brown implemented a curfew beginning at 9:30 p.m. for the area encompassing Riverfront Park and parts of downtown Spokane. It marked the first curfew since the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020. The affected zone extended from Boone Avenue to Spokane Falls Boulevard, and from Howard Street to Division Street. Community response to asylum seeker detentions sparks protest The protests began when demonstrators blocked ICE officers from leaving their downtown office with detained individuals Cesar Alexander Alvarez Perez, a Venezuelan asylum seeker, and Joswar Slater Rodriguez Torres from Colombia. Both men had previously been employed at a local Walmart on work visas, which were recently revoked. Live Events Former Spokane City Council President Ben Stuckart called for public support via social media and joined the protest, stating: 'They've done everything right, and they're escaping horrible situations, and then to have them come in for a checkup and be detained illegally is morally reprehensible.' Stuckart, who became Alvarez Perez's legal guardian weeks prior, said both men arrived for a scheduled check-in but were detained before he could advocate on their behalf. He clarified that rubber bullets were not used. 'Certainly there were peaceful folks demonstrating and utilizing their First Amendment rights, and there were also people in the crowd who were committing crimes,' Hall said. Protesters constructed barricades using park benches and Lime scooters to block ICE vehicles. Around 5:25 p.m., approximately 150 demonstrators attempted to prevent three unmarked law enforcement vehicles from exiting a fenced lot, leading to physical altercations with officers. A second protest later that evening at Riverfront Park escalated after 7:30 p.m. when police began making arrests and deploying tear gas. Witnesses said officers used paintball-style weapons before tear gas was released. Local leaders divided on protest tactics and law enforcement The protests drew local officials, activists, and residents, including Spokane County Democratic Party Chair Naida Spencer and state Rep. Timm Ormsby. Community leaders expressed concern about ICE tactics and immigration enforcement under President Donald Trump's administration. Council President Betsy Wilkerson stated: 'We're not trying to throw more wood on this fire, to elevate it to more than a peaceful protest.' Councilman Jonathan Bingle offered a contrasting perspective: 'The moment a protest turns into small vandalism, threats, or lawlessness, it is no longer protected speech. It becomes a crime, and should be dealt with as such.' Councilman Paul Dillon voiced support for the demonstrators. 'No human being is illegal,' he said. 'This is a direct result of the escalation and fears the Trump administration inflicts on communities which create chaos.'

North Korea expands nuclear program as Trump open to talks amid domestic challenges

North Korea constructs new facility at Yongbyon complex North Korea's nuclear program is all set to give US President Donald Trump a new headache as he tries to rein in Iran's ambition of acquiring nukes. Kim Jong Un, the supreme leader of North Korea, has pushed ahead with the nuclear program and built long-range ballistic missiles which are claimed to be capable of hitting the American mainland. North Korea appears to be advancing its nuclear weapons capabilities with the construction of a new building at the Yongbyon nuclear complex , according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The structure shares similar 'dimensions and features' with facilities at Kangson, another major nuclear site, IAEA Director General Mariano Grossi stated this week. Grossi said the agency has gathered 'consistent' evidence that North Korea has reprocessed spent nuclear fuel at Yongbyon since at least late January, 2025. Indicators include the nearly continuous operation of a steam plant at the site's Radiochemical Laboratory. The light water reactor (LWR) at Yongbyon also remained in stable operation except for a one-month shutdown in April 2025. Why is this critical? The IAEA noted the undeclared enrichment facilities at both Kangson and Yongbyon are of 'serious concern' and reported no significant changes at the Punggye-ri nuclear test site, which remains capable of supporting another test. North Korea's last confirmed nuclear test at Punggye-ri was in 2017. Live Events Despite being under multiple United Nations Security Council resolutions banning nuclear activity since 2006, North Korea has continued to expand its weapons program. The country is estimated to have produced enough fissile material for up to 90 nuclear weapons and has assembled approximately 50 warheads, according to a May, 2025 report by the US Congressional Research Service. IAEA highlights ongoing violations of Security Council resolutions The IAEA stated, 'The continuation and further development of the DPRK's nuclear programme are clear violations of relevant UN Security Council resolutions and are deeply regrettable.' The agency confirmed its enhanced readiness to verify North Korea's nuclear program if given access. The IAEA has not had inspectors inside North Korea since 2009. In the 1990s, Pyongyang agreed to freeze its nuclear program in exchange for international aid, but the deal collapsed in 2002 after North Korea admitted resuming uranium enrichment. Also read: Four North Korean officials arrested over failed warship launch in front of Kim Jong Un, face imminent execution Grossi emphasized that safety concerns persist regarding the LWR due to a lack of operational information and called for constructive engagement with North Korea with support from regional and international stakeholders. Trump open to talks as US monitors North Korean activity Amid reports of renewed nuclear activity, President Donald Trump remains open to restarting dialogue with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed on Wednesday, June 11, that Trump 'remains receptive to correspondence with Kim Jong Un and he'd like to see the progress that was made at that summit in Singapore.' Trump has maintained that he built strong relations with Kim during his first presidency, despite the collapse of the 2019 Hanoi summit. North Korean state media has remained silent on the possibility of reengagement, and Kim has said that past negotiations only confirmed Washington's 'unchangeable' hostility toward Pyongyang. The push for dialogue comes as South Korea's newly inaugurated liberal President Lee Jae-myung seeks to ease tensions. One of his administration's first actions was suspending the use of loudspeakers at the border that previously broadcast anti-Pyongyang messages. Also read: South Korea halts propaganda broadcasts along border with rival North in move to ease tensions Domestic pressures cloud Trump's foreign policy messaging While Trump seeks to rekindle talks with North Korea, he continues to face legal and political challenges domestically. His renewed interest in foreign policy has emerged alongside rising scrutiny over his legal battles and campaign activities during the 2024 election cycle. The geopolitical environment on the Korean Peninsula has shifted significantly since Trump and Kim last met. Kim has strengthened ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin and openly aligned with Moscow amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. North Korea has vowed to enhance its nuclear capabilities 'without limit' in response to perceived threats from the United States and its allies.

‘From nobody to the White House': Who is Dominick McGee? MAGA influencer stirring up outrage on X

(Photo: NYT) Dominick McGee was once just another online voice shouting into the void. But this April, the 31-year-old walked into the White House for a Trump press briefing — a moment of validation he proudly recorded for his 1.5 million X followers. 'I was a nobody,' he was quoted as saying by the New York Times. 'No clout, no followers, no nothing, no money. And look what's able to be created in the land of the free.' McGee's journey from a one-bedroom flat in Miami to the White House has been anything but usual. He started out posting conspiracy theories from his couch. Today, he's one of the most well-known far-right voices on X. At one point, he was ranked the third most influential user on the platform — just behind Elon Musk and Andrew Tate. But while he gained a lot of attention, the money didn't always follow. His rise came from a familiar formula: post all day, stir controversy, and grab attention. McGee starts his online work at 9 a.m. and continues until 8 p.m., hoping to catch the platform's algorithm. One post about WNBA star Brittney Griner went viral with over 11 million views after he encouraged users to misgender her. 'I know for a fact that Brittney Griner will go viral,' he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Classic Solitaire , Built for Desktop Play Solitaire Download Undo 'It's a great post to start the day.' McGee grew up in South Carolina, where he once thought selling drugs or joining a gang might be his only way forward. Instead, he joined the Army, later studied at Penn State through a veterans' programme, and tried his hand at music and fashion. But it was Trump's 'Stop the Steal' campaign that brought him an online following. A Facebook group he ran was banned for sharing false election information. He then switched to X, where Elon Musk's platform rewarded posts that got attention — though the pay was unpredictable. Since 2023, McGee has made about $157,000 from X's revenue-sharing programme. He earned $67,000 in the first year, but after being kicked out of the programme in 2024, his payments dropped to just $12,000. He complained to Musk and got a 'Will fix' reply — but not much happened. He only got another $16,000 after that. McGee also earned about $62,000 from followers who pay $10 a month for his exclusive posts. He once landed a $150,000 deal to promote a MAGA-themed cryptocurrency. But that coin lost over 90% of its value, and McGee was left using what was left to pay for rent, food, and his dog's meals. At one point, he had only $7 in his bank account. Even though he talks about investing in real estate and buying a Lamborghini, McGee admitted he made less than $55,000 last year. 'Honestly, $150,000 is a lot compared to my broke a** in the past,' he said. 'But I'm actually pretty poor. I'm one of the poor creators.' One of his biggest complaints is that X doesn't tell creators how much they'll earn from each post, making it hard to plan. 'That's insane for any adult to have to live their life that way,' he said. Now, McGee is shifting again — this time to podcasting and short viral videos. He's started a new show recorded in a Miami apartment. The idea isn't just to talk, but to create 30-second clips that go viral. The topics are lighter — celebrity news and pop culture — meant to attract a wider audience before sharing his political views. It's a method used by others like Candace Owens. 'It's not what I started off as originally,' he said. 'It's a survival mechanism. That's what it takes.' But controversy keeps following him. In 2023, McGee was suspended from X for posting a disturbing news image about child sexual abuse. He later said he was misunderstood and upset that no one asked about his side of the story. On a recent podcast, a guest used a homophobic slur and shared white nationalist views. McGee seemed uncomfortable and later said, 'Social media has radicalised him a little bit.' 'The first goal is to be seen,' he said. 'And they give you that.'
