Gilas Pilipinas shoots for FIBA Asia QF spot in do-or-die match vs Saudi Arabia

GMA Network2 days ago
The stakes couldn't be higher as Gilas Pilipinas tangles with host Saudi Arabia in a midnight Tuesday showdown that will decide who advances to the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup quarterfinals in Jeddah.
The Filipinos and the Saudis will meet again after three years at the King Abdullah Sports City at 12 a.m., with the winner setting a QF date with no less than two-time defending champion Australia.
With a lot on the line, both teams expect a dogfight.
Gilas Pilipinas head coach Tim Cone said he understands it's going to be a tough road ahead for his crew, especially with how they fared in their last three games against Chinese Taipei, New Zealand, and Iraq.
The Filipinos struggled early on after dropping their matches to Chinese Taipei and the Tall Blacks, but found their breakthrough win against the Iraqis as they punched their ticket to the qualification to quarterfinals.
Still, there's no letup for Gilas.
"We know the road is going to be tough, we know we picked a tougher road to go but we're ready to accept that challenge," Cone stressed following their 66-57 win over Iraq last Saturday.
"It's tough when you're playing on your heels and playing behind all the time, which we did against Chinese Taipei and we did it again against New Zealand but what I like about our team is we just don't quit."
Same goes for Saudi Arabia, which sees the Philippines as among the top contenders in the tournament despite a 1-2 win-loss card in Group D.
"We have our next match, it's not [gonna be] easy, it's very difficult. But everyday is difficult so we'll give our best," Saudi Arabia head coach Ricard Casas said.
"Of course it's very important in these next hours to prepare for the game because we'll play against a good team, the Philippines. It's top-level in the FIBA rankings, they have excellent players."
The Philippines and Saudi Arabia have met only three times in FIBA tournaments, with the Filipinos winning on all occasions, the last of which was a 76-63 win during the fifth window of 2023 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers in Jeddah as well.
Kai Sotto led the way along with RR Pogoy and CJ Perez in that 13-point victory.
But Gilas isn't putting much weight on the past, choosing instead to embrace the challenges at hand.
Justin Brownlee is once again expected to spearhead Gilas' offense, but Cone urged the rest of the squad to step up amid the defensive focus on the naturalized forward.
Dwight Ramos, who scored a team-high 21 points in their last game, is tipped to provide the huge lift alongside the front court tandem of June Mar Fajrdo and AJ Edu and the veteran presence of Scottie Thompson.
Gilas, though, might be one man down with Calvin Oftana hurting his ankle in their last outing.
"We have to use Justin not just to be as a scorer for us, but we can play off of him because he does draw so much attention," Cone added.
"And we actually made our run in that second quarter with Justin out of the game so everybody was like more involved."

Gilas Pilipinas to meet Australia again seven years after infamous FIBA brawl

Gilas Pilipinas and Australia are on a collision course again, seven years after their controversial brawl at the Philippine Arena in Bulacan. Gilas and the Boomers will duke it out in the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup quarterfinals on Wednesday with the latter out to keep their bid for a third consecutive gold medal alive while the Filipinos are seeking to pull off a major upset. "We know that they are the pretty much the number one seed in the tournament and for us to beat them is gonna be an upset," Gilas Pilipinas head coach Tim Cone on the heels of their 95-88 win against Saudi Arabia early Tuesday. The Philippines and Australia have faced off five times in FIBA tournaments, most recently during the 2019 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers here in the Philippines—a game overshadowed by a bench-clearing brawl. Australia won by default 89-53. AFP/Ted Aljibe The game saw 13 players and two coaches ejected and slapped with suspensions from international play, including Japeth Aguilar, Matthew Wright, Terrence Romeo, Jayson Castro, and Andray Blatche. Australia would run away with victory by default, 89-53, after the Philippines was left with only three players in June Mar Fajardo, Gabe Norwood, and Baser Amer, and they committed intentional fouls to get disqualified. Both teams now sport completely different looks. The Philippines has only two holdovers from that squad in Fajardo and Aguilar while Australia has none. The Boomers, now bannered by Jack McVeigh, Jaylin Galloway, and Reyne Smith, are the favorites to win the game as the two-time defending champions remain unscathed so far in the tournament, beating South Korea, Lebanon, and Qatar to complete a sweep of Group A to punch an outright quarterfinal berth. Gilas, meanwhile, suffered two narrow losses to Chinese Taipei and New Zealand and needed to pull off crucial victories over Iraq and Saudi Arabia to reach the quarterfinal round. —JMB, GMA Integrated News

CJ Perez taken to hospital after injury in Gilas' OT win vs Saudi Arabia

Gilas Pilipinas' 95-88 overtime triumph over Saudi Arabia came at a costly price as CJ Perez was taken to the hospital following an apparent ankle injury during the qualification to quarterfinals clash in the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup early Tuesday. The veteran guard looked to have hurt his right ankle while going for a loose ball at the 5:52 mark of the second quarter, further adding to Gilas' personnel woes with Calvin Oftana already sitting out the game due to his own ankle injury. "The only bad part about all this is the injury to CJ. Looks like it's a bad injury. He's in the hospital now," Gilas head coach Tim Cone said. "We don't know the extent of it but it didn't look good. I'm not gonna pretend to be a doctor and tell you what it is, but it was not a good injury so our prayers are with him." Missing two of their stalwarts, the Filipinos still withstood a gallant effort from the hosts, though it took an extra five minutes to get the job done. Brownlee finished with 29 points, none bigger than his cold-blooded three over a smaller defender that tied the game at 79 and forced an extra period. The naturalized player also grabbed four rebounds, five assists, and one block to star in the epic 95-88 victory that sent the Philippines to the quarterfinals against Australia. But Gilas showed it's more than just one man's game. Kevin Quiambao proved he belongs after the 24-year-old wingman posted 17 points, including two triples in the overtime, while AJ Edu churned out a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds. Dwight Ramos flirted with a double-double after collecting 13 markers and nine rebounds as June Mar Fajardo chimed in with six markers, two rebounds, and four assists. "But I'm just proud of our guys, we didn't quit. We had some leads that we gave up but they didn't quit either, that's what it was an epic game," Cone added. "Both teams battled to the very end." —JMB, GMA Integrated News

Gilas coach Tim Cone on Justin Brownlee heroics vs Saudi Arabia: 'That's not unusual'

Justin Brownlee's game-saving performance against Saudi Arabia was nothing out of the ordinary for Gilas Pilipinas head coach Tim Cone, who has watched the naturalized forward hit many clutch shots in his career. Brownlee buried a clutch three-pointer to force a 79-all deadlock in the regulation and eventually drag the Saudis to overtime during their qualification to quarterfinals duel in the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup. He then linked up with the young guns Kevin Quiambao, Dwight Ramos, and AJ Edu to close out a 95-88 victory. But for Cone, Brownlee's latest magical performance was just another chapter in a story he's seen unfold many times before. "It was a special game. It was a special performance by both teams. The home team really came to play and they were phenomenal," Cone said in the post-game press conference. "They posed a lot of problems for us and by all rights, they had the game won except for the guy sitting to my right who hit the big shots. If you know his history, that's not unusual. He's been hitting big shots." Cone and Brownlee's relationship goes beyond the national team as the two were behind a number of titles for Barangay Ginebra in the PBA, many of which were made possible by the latter's clutch plays. On the international stage, Cone has witnessed Brownlee work his magic as well, most notably during their historic gold medal run at the 19th Asian Games in 2023, where the naturalized forward showcased his scoring prowess. In their game against China in the semifinals, Brownlee detonated for 33 points to help the Philippines return to the Asian Games finals again after 33 years. He then led the offense in the finals against Jordan to end the country's 61-year gold medal drought. "I'm his coach in his club team and when we played the Asian Games, he was hitting big shots so this is nothing foreign to Justin," Cone added. "Then we came out and played very well in the overtime, really got the groove going, got some momentum. But man, what a special game that was." For Brownlee, the game was one to remember, as he credited both his teammates and the opposing side for giving fans a special contest. "I agree with coach, it was a great game. The host team came out and showed great support from the fans and as a player, these are the games you dream about and you really look forward to playing," said Brownlee, who finished with a team-high 29 points. "Just gotta give credit to both teams. Luckily, we came away with the win and advanced in this tournament." —JMB, GMA Integrated News
