
Melatonin: The wonder pill for sleep you still can't get hold of
Enter melatonin, the seemingly natural supplement with the promise to cure this very modern ailment. Melatonin is the hormone that our own brains produce to send us off to sleep each night. Your body naturally produces less melatonin as you age, with the process beginning around the age of 40 and escalates dramatically after 70.
In its synthetic form, filled into little white capsules or mixed into gummies, melatonin is available in supermarkets and on Amazon in the United States. It's also prescribed in Britain to people aged over 55 who have insomnia, and to children with ADHD or autism who struggle to sleep. Plenty more of us take melatonin occasionally for jet lag, even though you can't buy it over the counter in this country.
'When I see someone in clinic who is taking melatonin, the majority of the time, they've obtained it in this way rather than having been prescribed it,' says Dr Alanna Hare, a consultant in sleep and ventilation at Royal Brompton Hospital. There is a thriving middle-class black market for melatonin, which is legal to bring over from other countries or buy from online pharmacies, provided you don't sell it on.
Dr Hare has 'no doubt' that the desperate parents of children awaiting diagnoses for ADHD or autism find melatonin for them in this way too. Dr Cassie Coleman, a consultant paediatrician with a specialism in neurodiversity and child mental health, agrees. 'It's very common for parents to present at my clinic and tell me, with a huge amount of guilt, that they've accessed melatonin and are giving it to their children who either have ADHD or autism or are awaiting a diagnosis,' she says.
'Many parents are given some melatonin by their friends who also have neurodivergent children, after expressing just how exhausted they feel. Having a child who struggles to sleep can really upend family life, and it's often a massive source of anxiety and frustration for the child themselves too.'
When it comes to the effects of melatonin for families, 'the word 'life changing' is common,' says Dr Coleman. Melatonin supplements are considered 'very safe' to take, physically speaking, says sleep expert Dr Sophie Bostock. But while many people swear by it to help them drift off at night, research suggests that unless you have a specific sleep disorder, melatonin pills or chews are little more than placebo. So what's the truth about this highly sought-after sleep aid?
What is melatonin?
Melatonin is one of many hormones produced in your brain, with hormones being chemical messengers that signal different parts of your body to carry out different hormones. Specifically, melatonin is produced by the pineal gland, a tiny pinecone-shaped node (hence the name) that sits right in the middle of your brain. Other parts of the body like the eyes, skin and gut also produce some melatonin, but far less than is made by your pineal gland.

'A little bit of what you fancy' is a call for moderation that has never worked for me. Not for my coffee habit, at least, which slides from the steely resolve to drink just two cups a day, to a wobbly-willed four, five mugs, or more. I'm better at giving it up altogether. Total detox brings the high of self-control and the illusion that I have overcome the caffeine addiction, at least until I fall off the wagon again. But some vices shouldn't be given up, because they bring pleasure – and coffee is one of those for me. I love its mood-transforming uplift. It revs me up and calms me down. I once gave it up for two months – my longest abstention – hoping to shake off a virulent bout of insomnia, and it seemed as if I had entered the wilderness. Life felt more austere and my sleeplessness wasn't solved, either. It was lose-lose. So, three months ago, I decided, emphatically, not to kick the habit (and fail again) but to enjoy a single daily dose. This was initially born out of necessity: I went to a retreat where we were limited to a single cup of freshly ground coffee a day, at a time of our choosing, and I took great pains over deciding when I'd have mine, and where. Then I savoured it, desperate to make its effects last. Strangely, when I got back home, I stuck to that single cup. It is a change that feels simultaneously small and immense. I haven't slid back into excess, even in times of stress. I don't glug it down while scrolling or sitting at my laptop. I sit down and enjoy it, that's all. It has turned from an unthinking habit into a treat. You could call it mindful coffee drinking, I suppose. Several times a week, I go down to a dinky little cafe called Lilac on my north London high street, where they also sell coffee by the kilo, which they grind freshly. I have found that the nicer the coffee, the less I need of it. If I do feel a desire for more, I ask myself why. Am I anxious or tired? In which case, wouldn't it be better to rest? Or am I thirsty? Is this a physiological craving or a psychological one? Because water perks up the organs and wakes up the mind, too. I have found myself gravitating towards the exotic loose-leaf herbal tea and realised that my apparent craving for a coffee is simply the need for a warm drink and a break from work. A habit is sometimes a displacement activity; once I had become conscious of the underlying reasons for mine, I could address them. Importantly, I feel better for the coffee drinking. It clears my thoughts, and brings a sense of wellbeing. It is a reminder that it is excess that is detrimental, not coffee per se, which has circulatory benefits and is full of antioxidants. It's amazing how my body has adjusted, too. On the rare occasion that I have had two coffees in one day, I feel uncomfortably wired. GSK, China's Jiangsu Hengrui strike $500 million drug-development deal
July 28 (Reuters) - Britain's GSK (GSK.L), opens new tab and China's Jiangsu Hengrui Pharmaceuticals ( opens new tab have agreed on a $500 million deal to develop up to a dozen new medicines, including a promising candidate for a chronic lung condition, the drugmakers said on Monday. The deal comes as GSK focuses on growing its pipeline to offset declining revenues from top drugs and vaccines amid slowing demand and rising competition. It is hoping to reach annual sales of over 40 billion pounds ($53.7 billion) by 2031. Under the deal, GSK will gain an exclusive licence to Hengrui's HRS-9821, which is being studied as a treatment for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, with an option for 11 other treatments once they have cleared early-stage trials. Hengrui said, opens new tab it could earn up to $12 billion in milestone payments if all options are exercised and targets are met under the GSK deal, which would cover therapy areas such as oncology, immunology, and inflammation. GSK will pay the Chinese firm $500 million upfront.
