
Mpumalanga police arrest 24 more illegal miners at Sheba Gold Mine
Last week, police arrested close to 500 illegal miners at the same site.
They are expected to make their first court appearance on Monday on charges including possession of gold‑bearing material, contravention of the Immigration Act and trespassing.
According to provincial police, the 24 newly‑arrested suspects allegedly went deeper underground when officers first uncovered the operation last week.
They resurfaced on Monday after spending the entire weekend underground.
Police said a firearm was found in the possession of one of the suspects.

"One thing that we want to indicate is that they are still being processed, and possibly they could be found with other things," said Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Donald Mdhuli.
Meanwhile, in court, the nearly 500 accused will appear in two separate courtrooms due to space limitations.
Police investigations into illegal mining in the area are ongoing.

Farm murder accused says he was forced to feed women's bodies to pigs
During the brief proceedings, a supervisor on the farm turned state witness. One of the three men accused of killing two women and throwing their bodies in a pigsty in Limpopo has told the court he was forced to feed their bodies to pigs. Pig farmer Zackariah Olivier, his co-accused Rudolph de Wet, and Zimbabwean national William Musoro returned to the Polokwane High Court on Monday. Trial National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson Mashudu Malabi said the murder case was postponed to Thursday, 07 August 2025, to afford legal representatives an opportunity to consult and prepare for trial. 'The trial will commence on Monday, 11 August 2025. Accused number three (William Musora) has been moved out from the previous attorneys. Now he is going to be represented by Legal Aid South Africa.' State witness During the brief proceedings on Monday, the 20-year-old De Wet, a supervisor on the farm, turned state witness, and testified that Olivier shot and killed the two women. De Wet is expected to testify that he was 'under duress' when he was forced to throw their bodies into the pig enclosure, according to his lawyer and the state prosecutor. Charges against De Wet are expected to be dropped when he begins his testimony as a state witness. Olivier, De Wet and Musora are facing two counts of murder, attempted murder, defeating the administration of justice, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and unlawful possession of ammunition. Musora, who is a Zimbabwean national, faces an additional charge of contravening the Immigration Act. In December, a visibly emotional Olivier shook his head when Magistrate Ntilane Felleng announced the postponement of his bail application, meaning he spent Christmas behind bars. Murder Olivier, De Wet and Musora are accused of killing Maria Makgato and Lucia Ndlovu before dumping their bodies in a pigsty at Onvervaght farm in Sebayeng, outside Polokwane, in August. It is the state's case that Makgato and Ndlovu went to the farm to collect expired food that the pigs were eating. Nearly 500 illegal miners due to appear in Barberton court
JOHANNESBURG - Almost 500 illegal miners brought to the surface from a mine in Barberton in Mpumalanga last Friday are set to appear at the Barberton Magistrate's Court on Monday. The group faces charges of contravening the Immigration Act and trespassing, while others are facing charges of possession of gold-bearing material. Their arrest follows an intense operation by law enforcement and mine security as part of Operation Vala Umgodi in the province. The police initially estimated that 1,000 miners had been arrested but later revised that number down by half. Mpumalanga police spokesperson. Ppho Nonyane-Mpe: "Members of the SAPS, including the team that is working there in collaboration with home affairs officials, are currently busy with the purifying the number in terms of how many will be charged for what type of offence." Nonyane-Mpe said that an operation was underway to retrieve zama zamas that remained underground. "The plans in terms of the others that went deep, our members from Vala Umgodi, in collaboration with the mine security and also the Department of Minerals and Energy, will regroup and also esure that we communicate whatever action will be taken following this development."
