Peaky Blinder's fans hail creator's ‘superb' new series as ‘best British show ever'

Independent24-02-2025

Viewers of the new series, A Thousand Blows, have showered the show with praise after it debuted on Disney Plus on Friday (23 February).
The new show, which stars Stephen Graham, Erin Doherty and Malachi Kirby, blends the world of London's underground boxing scene in the Victorian era and the story of The 40 Elephants, an all-female gang of thieves, prominent in the 1920s. It's the latest creation from Peaky Blinders mastermind, Steven Knight.
Graham plays the show's antagonist, a ruthless bare-knuckle boxer called Heny 'Sugar' Goodson, who enters a rivalry with Kirby's Hezekiah Moscow, a Jamaican immigrant, who arrived in England with his best friend Alec (Francis Lovehall).
Moscow befriends Doherty's Mary Carr, the leader of the 40 Elephants, who also have their own score the settle with Goodson. All the characters are loosely based on real people, despite some of them never actually meeting in real life.
Although the show only arrived on Disney Plus a few days ago, viewers have spent the weekend watching all six episodes and some are already hailing it as a masterpiece.
One person who watched the first half of the show said: 'Watched the first three episodes of 'A Thousand Blows' last night, superb thus far, brilliant writing, cast and characters.'
Another added: 'This show 'A Thousand Blows' is definitely the best British show I've ever seen and definitely one of the best shows I've seen. Top tier!!!'
Meanwhile, a third claimed: 'The new Disney series, A Thousand Blows is 10/10 and everyone needs to watch.'
' A Thousand Blows season 2 when?' a fourth viewer enthusiastically asked.
Graham, 51, has recently opened up about his physical transformation for the show, admitting that he's become 'obsessed' with the routine and incorporated it into his own workout.
In preparation for the role, the This is England star worked with a professional bodybuilder to build his physique, which has been praised by fans.
Graham's transformation took him roughly six months, during which he was training for five days a week and eating a diet of chicken, rice and broccoli.
Speaking to The Guardian, Graham revealed he's an 'obsessive person' and continued the gruelling training long after filming for the series wrapped. 'It's now part of my life,' he said.

You can finally binge all 4 episodes of 'fantastic' historical drama for free

A critically acclaimed historical drama has arrived on a UK streaming service for free – just over a year after it was first released. Shardlake, which was originally released on Disney Plus in May 2024, was based on the 2000s novel series of the same by CJ Sansom. Set in the 16th century, the novels followed both fictional and non-fictional characters during the reign of King Henry VIII – much like BBC drama Wolf Hall. The series starred Game of Thrones actor Sean Bean, William Shakespeare theatre star Arthur Hughes, and Anthony Boyle of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child fame. Production on the four-part miniseries was overseen by The Last Kingdom creator Stephen Butchard and TV director Justin Chadwick, known for EastEnders. The series was cancelled by Disney Plus in January of this year, long after the first season had concluded, with prospective plans for a second season shut down. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video But perhaps there could be fresh hope of a delayed renewal after all – that's if Shardlake takes off again after ITV decided to broadcast all four episodes. The series follows Hughes' character Matthew Shardlake, a fictional 16th-century lawyer who has been asked to solve a mysterious murder at a monastery. Titular character Shardlake is under the employ of Thomas Cromwell, played by Bean, and is 'riddled with scoliosis' according to a synopsis from the Radio Times. Shardlake will be starting its run on ITV tonight at 9pm – episode two will be broadcast on June 16 and 9pm, with episodes three and four presumably going out on June 23 and June 30. All four episodes are currently available to stream on ITVX, however, for those who are excited for the whodunit series and want to binge the whole thing. On X, @The_Perdita commented: 'The mother and I are watching Shardlake – [Disney] are going to hell for not renewing it for another season.' @Monkey_Maisie said: 'ITV is showing a new series, Shardlake, at 9pm Monday. We loved the books so hope it will be good. It has Sean Bean in it!' When it was cancelled, @ChriThor said: 'Predictable really, we can't seem to keep good TV shows and it appears that Shardlake is another one that has been cancelled.' @TariboWest55 bemoaned: 'Really gutted to hear the news – Shardlake won't be returning for a second season. What a missed opportunity. Great cast and fantastic books. Disappointed.' The first Shardlake book, titled Dissolution, was published in 2003, with Dark Fire, Sovereign, and Relevation all coming out later in the same decade. More Trending In the 2010s, the series continued with Heartstone, Lamentation, and Tombland, with the last of the latest books coming out in 2018. No Shardlake books have been released since. Author CJ Sansom was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in his bone marrow cells in 2012, but continued to write and planned to continue the series. However, he sadly grew too unwell to keep on working and died in April 2024, aged 71 – he'd spent his final days in a hospice near his home in Brighton. Charming Welsh Victorian hotel that has its own tiny microbrewery

Charming Welsh Victorian hotel that has its own tiny microbrewery The brewery is located in Charming Llanwrtyd Wells, an offbeat town in mid-Wales, renowned for its weird and utterly bonkers events, from snorkelling in a bog to trying to outrun horses. The Heart of Wales Brewery is a friendly, family-run microbrewery situated inside the Neuadd Arms Hotel (Image: Portia Jones ) Craft beer and microbrewed ales have taken off in recent years, with indie brewers and quirky microbreweries popping up all over Wales and the UK faster than you can say "another round, please." Latest stats show there are around 1,715 active breweries in the UK, so it's fair to say we Brits do enjoy a proper pint of the good stuff. In Wales, the craft beer scene has come into its own. What started as a bit of homebrewing in the shed has evolved into a booming industry, with names like Tiny Rebel and Wrexham Larger making the leap into the mainstream. ‌ There's also a brilliant bunch of independent brewers keeping things small-scale and full of character. Some are even tucked away inside cosy pubs or community venues, brewing up unique local ales with bags of personality. ‌ One Welsh brewer worth a visit is the Heart of Wales Brewery, an independent brewery doing excellent work in the small town of Llanwrtyd Wells in Powys. Here's how you can try their top-notch selection of ales straight from the source. Article continues below The most famous event is the delightfully daft World Bogsnorkelling Championships, which draws brave (and slightly eccentric) competitors from across the globe to win the accolade of being the fastest bog snorkeller over 120 yards in a peat bog- yes, you have read that correctly. Wearing a facemark, snorkel tube and flippers, racers are permitted to use doggy paddle with arms below the water, and costumes are positively encouraged. There's also the Real Ale Wobble, a cheeky mix of mountain biking and beer and the Man vs Horse race, where runners and riders go head-to-head across the hills. ‌ Fancy a go at something a bit more low-key? The Welsh Open Stone Skimming Championships are open to all ages and held on the lovely Abernant Lake, just outside town. The most famous event is the delightfully daft World Bogsnorkelling Championships (Image: PA ) One of the strangest events on offer is the 'Mari Lwyd Walk, where a torch-lit procession follows the "Mari", a decorated horse's skull carried on a pole by the leader, around the town, calling at various locations where there is a re-enactment of the ancient Welsh tradition of "Mari Lwyd" where Welsh "bants" are exchanged to gain refreshment. Of course. ‌ Llanwrtyd Wells might be small, but it's packed with character. Think pastel-hued houses, old drovers' roads weaving through the surrounding countryside, a proper pub or two, and a community with a big love for quirky events that put this little town on the map. Right at the heart of it all is the Heart of Wales Brewery, a friendly, family-run microbrewery situated inside the Neuadd Arms Hotel. This hotel and bar is a Victorian Grade II listed building that offers accommodation, home-cooked food, a roaring log fire, and real ales, including the Heart of Wales-brewed ales. ‌ Neuadd Arms Hotel is a Victorian Grade II listed building (Image: Dafydd Wyn Morgan ) It's a small brewing venture that produces a wide range of ales, including special brews throughout the year to celebrate the town's madcap events, like bog snorkelling and Mountain Bike Chariot Racing. Their initial brew was produced in 2004 using local spring water through a friend's brewery, especially for the Mid Wales Beer Festival held in the town each November. ‌ The ale Blaen Gwennol (named after the spring) was so well received that the brewery felt there was the potential to build on this craft beer success. The small brewery features a custom-built, six-barrel plant comprising six stainless steel vessels, along with all the associated ancillary equipment necessary to produce traditional real ales. It's housed on two floors linked by a cast-iron spiral staircase. They can brew 1728 pints at a time and normally brew their ales twice a week. ‌ Royalty have also popped in for a pint. TRH The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall unveiled an opening plaque at the brewery during their visit in July 2010, and then poured a pint in the main bar. Welsh Craft ales The Heart of Wales brews a small selection of ales with various "specials" brewed throughout the year. So keep an eye out for their latest batch. (Image: Portia Jones ) The Heart of Wales website states that they use only natural ingredients with no added chemicals or sugar, and their ales are carefully brewed by traditional methods to reproduce the flavours of ales as they used to be. ‌ Their malts come from Warminster Maltings in Wiltshire, the oldest floor maltings in the country and one of only four remaining. They still use traditional hand-made methods in the original Victorian malting complex, which has been producing quality malt since 1845. In 2010, they even sank their own borehole to take advantage of the pure Cambrian water beneath the ground, naturally filtered by the mountain rocks, to give their ales a truly local heritage. What ales do they have? The Heart of Wales brews a small selection of ales with various "specials" brewed throughout the year. So keep an eye out for their latest batch. Some of their regular ales include Aur Cymru, a bright and refreshing golden ale, the Heart of Wales Bitter, which has a smooth balance between malt and hops, and their Irfon Valley Bitter, brewed at 3.6% abv. ‌ They also have a Welsh Black, a dry stout with a liquorice flavour that is popular with locals. It was voted winner in its class at the CAMRA Great Welsh Beer & Cider Festival in June 2009. Where can you get their ales? The main square in Llanwrtyd Wells (Image: South Wales Echo ) The best place to sample their selection of ales is straight from the cask at the Neuadd Arms Hotel. Enjoy a bitter, ale or stout straight from the source in their cosy bar next to a warming fire. They also distribute our casks through wholesalers in Somerset and Manchester, making them available in a wide area of the UK. You can also ask your local pub if they stock any of their brews. They have recently started bottling some of their output, allowing their unique ales to be enjoyed at home. These specially bottled ales can be bought directly from the Neuadd Arms Hotel.
