Root strikes 38th Test hundred as England pile misery on India
Washington Sundar got the ball to drift and got rid of Ollie Pope (71 off 128 balls) and Harry Brook (3 off 12) after lunch, providing a much needed relief for India after a wicketless morning session.
Root (121 batting off 201), however, continued to pile on the runs and reached three figures with a four down the leg side off Anshul Kamboj, laying the foundation for the hosts' 75 runs lead.
Minutes later he also surpassed Ricky Ponting to become the second highest run-scorer in Tests, leaving him only behind Sachin Tendulkar, who amassed 15921 runs.
India employed spinners Washington and Ravindra Jadeja from both ends despite taking the new ball. The move worked as Sundar had Pope caught at first slip before having Brook stumped as he could not connect on the charge.
Root chose to play on the backfoot when the spinners were in operation and used the reverse sweep effectively.
Towards the end of the session, Root took a single off Kamboj to get past the great Ponting in the all time leading run getters list.
England captain Ben Stokes (36 batting off 68) chugged along at the other end as he and Root shared an unbeaten 84-run alliance for the fifth wicket.
Bumrah bowling just one over with the new ball before leaving the field added to India's woes. When he finally returned to bowl, the umpires reminded him that he was only allowed to bowl post tea.
In the morning session, the Indian bowlers did not pose enough threat for the seasoned Root and Ollie Pope who steered England to 332 for two at lunch.
After a forgettable evening session on day two, the Indian bowling attack once again failed to make inroads into the England batting.
Besides an odd ball keeping low from the James Anderson end and another jumping from the opposite side, Bumrah and Co did not trouble Root and Pope.
Guilty of offering too many freebies on the leg side on Thursday, the Indian pacers continued to offer loose balls to release pressure on the opposition.
Bumrah bowled a full ball into Root's pads to start his day and the England veteran duly flicked it for a four. Later in his spell, Pope and Root were quick to pull Bumrah for a boundary each when the Indian pace spearhead pitched it short.
Resuming the day at 225 for two, England eased to 266 for two in the first hour of play.
Kamboj, who had an underwhelming start to his Test career on day two, created a chance in his opening spell but Dhruv Jurel could not hold on to a tough chance. Pope was 48 at the time.
Washington was introduced as late as the 69th over and Root put him under pressure straightaway by reverse sweeping him for a boundary. PTI BS UNG

Dilip Tirkey CHENNAI: After weeks of uncertainty surrounding their participation and mixed signals, it is now official that the Pakistan hockey team will take part in both major tournaments – the Asia Cup and the Junior Men's Hockey World Cup — in India. The Asian meet is set to be held in Rajgir from August 27 to September 7, while the Junior World Cup will take place from November 28 to December 10 across two venues: Chennai and Madurai. Confirming the development, Hockey India (HI) treasurer and president of the Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu, Sekar J Manoharan, told TOI that both the senior and junior teams from Pakistan have applied for visas. 'Pakistan's teams will definitely be coming. They've already submitted visa applications. The senior men's team has applied with a contingent of 18 players and seven support staff,' Sekar said after the inauguration of the Sub-Junior Men's National Hockey Championship here on Monday. Sekar also mentioned that the Indian junior team will arrive in Chennai in the first week of October for its preparatory camp. Earlier, there had been indications that the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) might not send teams for the upcoming tournaments in India. It was speculated that the PHF had written to the FIH (International Hockey Federation) and the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF), expressing their reservations over sending the teams to India. HI President Dilip Tirkey said the federation has not received any official communication yet. 'We too are hearing these talks, but we haven't received any news from the Pakistan team officially yet. If we do receive it, we will take it up with FIH and they will decide how to go about it,' Tirkey told TOI. 'Selectors told to act if form dips' The India men's team endured a poor campaign in the recent FIH Pro League, finishing eighth and suffering seven straight defeats. Reacting to the dismal performance, Tirkey said the federation is in talks with head coach Craig Fulton and the selectors. 'The Pro League is very important for us. And now, we have more important tournaments coming up. If we see players who are not performing well and are unable to deliver, it's on the selectors to take a call. And if there is a fall in form for some players who have been playing for a long time, we've told the selectors to watch out and take action.' Govt backing key to hosting big events After Chennai successfully hosted the Asian Champions Trophy in 2023, Tirkey said HI is confident of staging more marquee events here, thanks to strong support from the Tamil Nadu government. 'TN govt supported us very much last time when we hosted ACT. And where there's full support from the govt, we get the confidence to host international and domestic competitions. This is why we are hosting the Junior World Cup here. The Indian government knows how important security will be, so it will be given accordingly,' said Tirkey. Test call-up reward for his performance: Jagadeesan's coach
CHENNAI: Even as Rishabh Pant's injury came as a dampener for the Indian team, it meant that Tamil Nadu keeper-batter N Jagadeesan has received his maiden Test call-up for the fifth and final Test against England to be played at The Oval on Thursday. Jagadeesan has been rewarded for his consistent performances in the last two seasons for Tamil Nadu in the Ranji Trophy, where he top-scored for his side. In the 2023/24 season, he made 816 runs at 74.18 with a high score of 321. In the 2024/25 Ranji season, he made 674 runs at 56.16. Jagadeeasan's personal coach AG Guruswamy, a highly respected figure in Tamil Nadu cricketing circles, is all the more pleased that his protege will be going to England. "Very happy that Jagadeesan has been called by the Indian team management for the last Test as a back up for injured Pant. He has been working hard all these years and in the last two years, he has done extremely well for Tamil Nadu in both white-ball and red-ball cricket. He deserves the call-up,'' said Guruswamy. What paved the way for Jagadeesan all up was the fact that the current India team management wanted a wicketkeeper who can bat. "Maybe that his batting is a bonus and that paved the way for his call-up. But let's not forget he has also been brilliant behind the wickets. He has been constantly working on his wicket keeping skill sets and has always shown the attitude to put extra effort in practice sessions to polish his game," said Gurusamy. "Jags is mentally very strong. In the last couple of years he has also worked on the mental aspect of the game. He is calm, cool and precise in his approach to the game, thus he can handle pressure. For the last ten days he has been practicing in Coimbatore for his club games. So should he get an opportunity to play for India, I am sure he will excel and not be rusty. Plus, skill-wise, he is good. Because you see, he has been brought up on matting wickets. Backfoot play will be very good for players who play on matting wickets. He will be able to handle the bounce better,'' he added.
