Indian Express11 hours ago
With the Opposition parties skipping a discussion in the Lok Sabha on Shubhanshu Shukla's space journey as part of its protest against the Central government, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor took to his social media to call the space mission a a pivotal moment for India's human spaceflight ambitions.
He said the mission had 'captured the nation's imagination' and would inspire many young Indians to explore careers in space science and technology.
Responding to a tweet by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on X, the Congress leader confirmed the absence of Opposition from the special discussion. 'Since the Opposition are not participating in the special discussion, let me say how proud all Indians are of the recent mission of Commander Shubhanshu Shukla to the International Space Station (ISS),' he said.
In a series of posts on X, the Congress leader elaborated on the significance of Shukla's mission for India's space program, particularly ISRO's upcoming Gaganyaan mission.

'Shukla's mission provided ISRO invaluable hands-on experience & data that cannot be replicated in simulations. His first-hand observations on pre-launch procedures, spacecraft systems, and the psychological and physiological effects of microgravity are crucial for de-risking and refining the Gaganyaan mission.'
Tharoor also spoke about the importance of the mission in strengthening India's position, saying that working with international space agencies was a big step forward for India's role in global space efforts.
'His mission in partnership with international agencies reinforced India's role in global space diplomacy. It demonstrates India's willingness and capability to engage in multilateral space efforts and opens doors for future joint research and investment,' he said.
'Commander Shukla's historic flight serves as a powerful symbol of India's ambitions in human spaceflight. It has captured the nation's imagination, inspiring a new generation to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, maths & space studies — all essential for sustaining India's long-term space goals. Well done!'

Opposition VS BJP over Bihar's SIR drive: INDIA bloc mulls motion to impeach CEC over 'bias and irregularity'

The parliamentary floor leaders of the INDIA bloc on Monday discussed the option of submitting a notice for an impeachment motion against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alleging bias and irregularity in his conduct of elections, especially the special intensive revision (SIR) in Bihar. The notice proposal was made at the INDIA bloc leaders' meeting by Congress chief whip Jairam Ramesh and some of his colleagues and is being seen by many Opposition leaders as a Congress response to CEC's aggressive rebuff at a press conference of the leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi 's 'vote theft' charge and his dismissal of the Opposition's grouse against the SIR-drive in Bihar. While the Opposition can easily arrange the required signatures for submitting the notice, their project faces uncertainty in getting past the Chair's scrutiny given the strict conditions, defying reasons, laid out to accept such notices against the CEC or the Chief Justice of India. On the possibility of the Opposition bringing a notice for the impeachment motion, Congress deputy leader in the Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi said, "There was a discussion about it with a larger unity. We will take the appropriate decision at the appropriate time." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like NRIs Living In Croatia Are Eligible For INR 2 Lakh Monthly Pension. "The CEC offered no comment or clarification on why the Bihar SIR was being conducted in such a hasty, ill-prepared and ad hoc manner," said a joint statement issued by a group of INDIA bloc MPs at a presser. "ECI has completely failed in discharging its constitutional duty of ensuring a free and fair electoral system in the country," they alleged.

EC asks Rahul to share details for probe into ‘vote theft' claims

Patna: The chief electoral officer (CEO), Bihar, Vinod Singh Gunjiyal, on Monday reacted to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi 's allegations that "the votes of people who voted in the last four-five elections were also stolen in Bihar". Referring to his meeting with some electors at Aurangabad during his ongoing 'Voter Adhikar Yatra', the CEO requested Rahul to "provide the EPIC numbers and other detailed information of the electors displayed in the video in the prescribed format, so that necessary investigations can be conducted and further action can be taken in this regard." Rahul in a post on X had shared the video of his interaction with electors of Aurangabad. In his post on X, the CEO said: "It is also requested that assistance be provided to the electors concerned by facilitating the registration of their claims and objections during the claim-objection period. The last date for registering claims and objections is Sept 1, 2025." Mentioning the instructions of the Election Commission (EC), he further stated, "Any booth-level agent of a political party can submit claims and objections in the prescribed format and declaration form. Additionally, any voter can individually submit claims and objections in Forms 6, 7, and 8. This facility is also available on the EC's portal." Commenting on the removal of over 65 lakh voters' names from the draft electoral rolls published on Aug 1, Rahul on his second day of the yatra, presented a few people, including one Sunil Oraon, on the stage and said, "The votes of people who voted in the last four-five elections were also stolen in Bihar. And, when asked for the reason, the only answer received was—an order has come from above. This is a fight for the rights of the poor… we will not stop. We will stop vote theft." Sunil and others on the stage alleged that their names were there in the 2024 voter list and they had voted in the Lok Sabha elections. They alleged that hundreds of names were removed and new names were added in the draft list. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
