Northamptonshire council leader to step down at next election
Elections to North Northamptonshire Council are due to take place on 1 May.Smithers was elected to represent Oundle on the authority and became its first leader on 6 May 2021.As a business person, he has owned a cafe in Higham Ferrers and a car rental company.
He was at the helm in North Northamptonshire when the council sent out 800 incorrect council tax summonses in 2021.He admitted that the council had "fallen short" when only 60% of social housing tenants in its area said they were satisfied with the council's actions as a landlord. There were calls for him to quit last year after the council consulted the wrong street about a proposal for a new warehouse.
More positive news came last November when an external review of the council found it had made significant progress. The Local Government Association said: "So much has been achieved by North Northamptonshire Council since vesting day and this needs to be celebrated."An Ofsted review of the area's services for children in care last year found they had "significantly improved".Smithers said: "It has been a privilege and honour to be the council's first leader and to serve everyone in North Northamptonshire."I feel that I have helped get the authority off to a solid start. Now feels like the right time for me to transition into semi-retirement, focus more on my family and on new opportunities ahead."

Machete is pulled on shadow home sec Chris Philp and bottles thrown on visit to migrants in Dunkirk ‘Jungle' camp
Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp has said he had a 'curved machete' pulled on him and was 'pelted with bottles' whilst on a visit to Dunkirk's new 'Jungle camp'. The Conservative MP began a trip to investigate illegal migration last night, travelling to northern France to visit a migrant camp near Dunkirk. In updates posted to X, Philp said: 'Exiting the jungle 2 near Dunkirk where we had a machete pulled on us. Then got pelted with glass bottles.' The MP for Croydon South spoke to police, locals and aid workers, noting a lack of French police on the beaches where illegal migrant boat launches are common. The MP posted this morning: '5am and I'm walking along the beach which has seen many illegal migrant boat launches - including yesterday. 'I can't see any French police here either - why aren't they patrolling this launching point? It's negligent.' Philps' encounter comes as Home Offices figures yesterday showed that over 50,000 migrants had arrived in the UK alone since Prime Minister Keir Starmer's landslide victory. Speaking to GB News shortly after the incident, Philps said: 'I was talking to migrants there literally about ten or 15 minutes ago. 'First of all, as I was talking to some migrants, another one pulled out a curved machete and started brandishing it, at which point we left pretty quickly. 'And then as we were leaving, we got pelted with glass bottles. 'And as we drove off other bottles got thrown at the car.' The MP for Croydon South spoke to police, locals and aid workers, noting a lack of French police on the beaches where illegal migrant boat launches are common The so-called 'Dunkirk 'Jungle' camp' or 'Jungle 2' is a French refugee camp that is thought to have replaced, by size, the 'Jungle' camp in Calais which was notorious before it was closed in 2016.

MPs and MSPs commit to debates on Highland energy projects pause
A convention of community councils organised by Aird and Loch Ness councillor Helen Crawford (Conservative) was held at the Kingsmills Hotel in Inverness on Tuesday. It follows a meeting in June, where more than 50 community councils came together to demand a pause on energy infrastructure projects across the Highlands. The convention, representing more than 72,000 people, is collectively calling for an immediate pause on major energy applications until their cumulative impact can be fully assessed. READ MORE: Fringe reviews: Florence, One Man Poe, Zoe Coombs Marr and more The groups stress they are not against renewables, but are seeking further investigation into the impact on the Highlands. Scotland's Energy Secretary Gillian Martin and the UK Government's Energy Minister Michael Shanks turned down the invitation to attend. MPs and MSPs from the SNP, Labour, Conservatives and LibDems attended, alongside several Highland councillors. The political representatives were as follows: Angus Macdonald MP (LibDems) Douglas Ross MSP (Conservative) Edward Mountain MSP (Conservative) Emma Roddick MSP (SNP) Fergus Ewing MSP (Independent) Graham Leadbitter MP (SNP) Jamie Halcro Johnston MSP (Conservative) Jamie Stone MP (LibDems) Maree Todd MSP (SNP) Tim Eagle MSP (Conservative) Torcuil Crichton MP (Labour) The 11 representatives signed a statement which laid out two intentions. The statement reads: "We, the undersigned Highland MSPs and MPs: Recognise and value local democracy and the pivotal role of all out Community Councils in ensuring that democracy is respected, and Undertake to do all that we can across our representative parties to secure urgent debates at both Holyrood and in the House of Commons at Wednesday on the attached Unified Statement of the Highland Convention of Community Council dated 14th June 2025." Highland councillor Crawford, who is chairwoman of the community council convention, is a former lawyer and has said parliamentary debates would force ministers to defend policies. "This is a way to get ministers to address the issues when they previously have not," Crawford said following the signing. "Of course not everyone shares the same view, but this is a growing movement because people want this and need this conversation to happen. "The statement is not perfect. But it's a real attempt to address where the whole process has gone wrong and, let me be frank, this is not simply a local failure, it's a national failure to address what's going on. "This clearly needs to go to Westminster and it needs to go to Holyrood."

Who's on JD Vance's Cotswolds guest list?
Well, well, well. The US Vice President has taken a family trip to the UK this summer, to enjoy a stay at an 18th-century Georgian manor in the Cotswolds. But although this getaway was supposed to provide some leisure time for JD Vance, the VP has made space to meet with a stream of British politicians and, er, at least one wannabe politico. So who is on Vance's guest list? First up was Foreign Secretary David Lammy, who took a fishing trip with Donald Trump's second in command at the weekend to discuss the war in Gaza and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Shadow justice secretary Robert Jenrick – and onetime Tory leadership contender – met with the Vice President on Tuesday, for a tête-à-tête before a drinks event. Jenrick wasn't the only shadow cabinet member to get the call up, however, with shadow home secretary Chris Philp also invited to see Vance on Tuesday. His boss, Kemi Badenoch has not been so fortunate – although a Conservative spokesperson insisted that the VP and Tory leader 'just couldn't make it work with schedules'. Vance's press secretary, Taylor Van Kirk, added: The Vice-President met with a number of people during his trip to the United Kingdom. He specifically tried to see Kemi Badenoch, a friend of his, but a meeting was not possible due to their conflicting schedules. Any suggestion otherwise is false. That's that then! Reform leader Nigel Farage didn't manage to meet President Trump during his visit to Scotland last month, but he has been luckier this time. The Clacton MP secured an eleventh-hour meet with the VP, and is seeing Vance this morning for breakfast in the Cotswolds. And there's more: Vance met with his friend (and Spectator writer) James Orr on Monday for a barbecue, alongside Tory MP Danny Kruger and, er, even one Thomas Skinner – who befriended Vance online. It's certainly not the first time the Apprentice and MAGA have crossed paths, eh? Bosh.
