Major car brand to lock new model's full power behind monthly subscription as fans blast ‘this will be the future'
VW says this offers customers the flexibility to choose a sportier drive when desired PLUG IN Major car brand to lock new model's full power behind monthly subscription as fans blast 'this will be the future' VOLKSWAGEN has come under fire after it was revealed they look set to introduce a subscription model to unlock the full power in two of its electric cars. Buyers will have to pay a monthly or annual fee to access the maximum performance of two EV models - with fans worried it could see the beginnings of a future where manufacturers charge ongoing fees for features already built into vehicles. 4 VW have been criticised for introducing a subscription model to unlock the full power in two iterations of the ID.3 model Credit: Volkswagen 4 For a monthly fee, the car's performance could be increased from 201bhp to 228bhp Credit: Volkswagen Advertisement 4 Various payment options are available, including a £16.50 per month option Credit: Volkswagen 4 Many feel that paying extra to unlock existing capabilities feels exploitative and view it as a shift towards monetising basic functions Credit: Volkswagen According to Auto Express, UK customers will soon be forced by the German brand to fork out extra to unlock additional power in the ID.3 Pro and ID.3 Pro S. The subscription will allow owners to pay for an upgrade that increases the car's performance from 201bhp to 228bhp and increase the torque from 265Nm to 310Nm Advertisement Various payment options are available; £16.50 per month, £165 annually or £649 for a lifetime subscription. Auto Express added that the lifetime option is tied to the car, not the individual, meaning the enhanced performance remains even if the car is sold. VW says this approach offers customers flexibility, allowing them to opt for a sportier driving experience without committing to a higher upfront purchase price. In a statement, the firm added: 'Offering more power to customers is nothing new - historically many petrol and diesel vehicles have been offered with engines of the same size, but with the possibility of choosing one with more potency. Advertisement 'These traditionally are higher up in the product range, with more specification and a higher list price. 'If customers wish to have an even sportier driving experience, they now have an option to do so, within the life of the vehicle, rather than committing from the outset with a higher initial purchase price. 'The car is presented on the configurator with [201bhp], with the option made very clear to customers.' SUBSCIPTION ECONOMY The concept of charging for subscription-based add-ons for features like heated seats or improved already been present in vehicles built by the likes of BMW and Mercedes in the past. The world's most famous hatchback turned 50 in 2024 – key reasons why it's still going strong and loved by millions However, many drivers feel that paying extra to unlock existing capabilities feels exploitative and view it as a shift towards monetising basic functions, further adding to the growing "subscription economy." Advertisement Taking to social media, many made their feelings very clear. 'Every single manufacturer pushing stuff like this deserves to fail,' said one user on X. Another added: 'I like 20 years you'll need to pay a monthly subscription to even drive the car you own. 'It's the long con so companies can make money off you even after your card is paid off.' A third commented: 'Stop supporting companies that wanna just squeeze you for every dime.' Advertisement And fourth wrote: 'That'll be the lowest selling car in their lineup and it won't be close.' The issue has already brought about an intriguing debate around 'jailbreaking', which refers to modifying or hacking a vehicle's software to unlock features or capabilities that are restricted. In the case of VW's ID.3 subscription model, jailbreaking could involve bypassing the software locks that prevent access to the car's full power without paying the subscription fee. Jailbreaking, though, typically violates the terms of the manufacturer's warranty, meaning the owner would have to pay for repairs out of pocket, while hacking a car's software could result in legal action from the manufacturer. What's more, modifying software can lead to unintended consequences, such as disabling essential safety systems like ABS or airbags. Polestar 3 EV recognised in the Guinness Book of World Records
A professional driving team has managed to drive a Polestar 3 SUV for a record distance of 935 kilometres on a single charge in a recent test, which has now been recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records. The record was achieved by three drivers over a period of 23 hours and covered a loop around Southern England in mixed conditions, both in terms of weather and traffic. Before we conclude that this finally means the end of range anxiety, however, it should be noted that the three drivers are employed by Webfleet, a company that advises fleet vehicle operators on reducing fuel consumption. The drivers are known as "professional efficiency drivers." Unlike most drivers, these professionals are trained to employ several techniques to boost fuel efficiency. I've driven in such tests before, and they're not easy to adapt to. They involve avoiding harsh acceleration and braking, coasting without acceleration when possible, anticipating traffic conditions, using cruise control when possible and generally trying to coax the car to be as energy efficient as possible. One of the drivers, Sam Clarke, told Auto Express magazine that this journey record is more relevant than an outright range record because "it's the closest thing to the real world, on proper roads at proper speeds". He admitted, however, that achieving this range is not easy. "We're not suggesting for a second that everybody can achieve the same ranges that we did, but we did exceed the WLTP figures by some margin, so it just shows what's possible. Driving a little bit more efficiently – which ultimately equates to just moving your right foot a few less millimetres each time – can actually generate significant amounts of range", he told Autocar. The attempt took 22 hours and 57 minutes to complete in mixed weather conditions, including rain, and the Polestar 3 achieved an efficiency of 12.1 kWh/100 km. The three drivers took three-hour shifts behind the wheel. The overall consumption was 12.1 kWh per 100 kilometres, which is what you might expect from something much smaller and lighter than the 2.4 tonnes of weight the Polestar 3 has to carry. It ran for a further 12.8 kilometres after the range indicator reached zero. The car had the extended range battery and was unmodified in any way. It also ran on standard 20" wheels with Michelin 4 EV tyres. The record was adjudicated by a Guinness World Records judge. Webfleet provided "meticulously documented and independently verified video footage, odometer readings, GPS readings, and battery level data."

Massive car brand recalls over 103,000 MORE motors due to ‘clicking' or ‘rattling' noise
Read on for checks owners can do Rear-ly serious Massive car brand recalls over 103,000 MORE motors due to 'clicking' or 'rattling' noise MASSIVE car giant has issued an urgent recall for over 103,000 more vehicles – after owners reported a mysterious 'clicking' or 'rattling' noise coming from their motors. Ford is recalling more than 103,000 F-150 pickups in the US after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) flagged damaged axle bolts. 4 Ford recalls F-150s over dodgy bolts Credit: Reuters 4 The car brand ordered 103,000 pickups back to the garage Credit: Alamy The issue could cause a 'clicking' or 'rattling' noise while driving, and in the worst-case scenario, may affect the vehicle's handling - prompting the safety warning and recall. They were recalled after faulty axle bolts were linked to potential rollaways and loss of drive power. A broken axle bolt can damage the axle hub splines - the parts that transfer power from the axle to the wheels. If the splines are damaged, vehicles could roll away when in park without the handbrake on, or lose drive power while on the move, raising the risk of a crash, the US auto safety body said. The report warns that a loose rear axle bolt could cause a clicking noise, while a broken bolt might produce a rattling sound. Ford dealers will replace the rear axle shaft assemblies free of charge to fix the problem. The recall covers F-150 models from 2023 to 2025, with NHTSA estimating around 1% of vehicles are affected. CHECKS & PRECAUTIONS There are checks and precautions that drivers can take to check if they are affected by the recall. Drivers following these steps can also reduce the risk while waiting for the official repair. Listen out for noises: Pay attention to any unusual clicking or rattling coming from the rear of the truck, especially when parked or driving. Ford dealership files for bankruptcy after recall sparked freeze in sales – but owner insists it's 'business as usual' HISTORY OF RECALLS This isn't the first time Ford has had to issue a recall for its popular F-150 series — the model has faced previous fixes for issues ranging from engine glitches to brake problems. Ford has recalled several F-150 models - along with other Ford and Lincoln vehicles - due to potential brake fluid leaks from the brake master cylinder, which can impact braking performance. There have been recalls for the potential loss of power brake assist. Some F-150s, along with other models like the Bronco and Explorer, have been recalled due to potential engine valve issues, where intake valves could fracture and cause engine failure. The F-150 has also been subject to recalls for issues like rearview camera software defects and potential transmission problems that can cause unexpected downshifts. Rear shock absorber external reservoir corrosion was also a problem associated with these models. Meanwhile, the 2025 Ranger reported missing or loose driver's seat bolts. Buying a used car?
