
2 men claim trial to gang rape, extortion, and impersonating cops
PETALING JAYA : Two food traders in Klebang pleaded not guilty at the sessions court in Melaka to charges of gang-raping a university student, extortion, and impersonating police officers last week.
Shafiq Asyraf Jasarudin, 23, and Nazhim Razali, 29, pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to them before judge Rohatul Akmar Abdullah.
They were accused of gang-raping a 19-year-old victim in a car in front of a convenience store at Taman Rambai Utama, between 9pm and 10pm on May 22, Sinar Harian reported.
The charge was framed under Section 375B of the Penal Code, which provides for a jail term of a minimum of 10 years and maximum of 30 years, upon conviction.
Shafiq and Nazhim were also slapped with a charge under Section 384 of the same law, read together with Section 34, for extorting the student and a 20-year-old male by threatening to hurt them if they did not pay up RM3,000.
If found guilty for extortion, the accused may each face imprisonment of up to 10 years, a fine or whipping, or any two of such punishments.
Additionally, the two traders were charged under Section 170 of the Penal Code, read with Section 34 of the same law, for impersonating police officers at Pantai Klebang, Melaka Tengah.
The section provides for imprisonment of up to two years, or a fine, or both, upon conviction.
All offences were said to have been committed on the same date and time.
The court fixed July 7 for document submission.
Deputy public prosecutor Wardah Ishhar acted for the prosecution while lawyer Kent Tan appeared for Nazhim and lawyer K Shareveen for Shafiq.

Malaysia gets first woman Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak, fills all top judicial posts
PUTRAJAYA, July 28 — Federal Court judge Datuk Abu Bakar Jais was sworn in today as the President of the Court of Appeal (PCA), while Court of Appeal judge Datuk Azizah Nawawi became the first woman to become the Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak (CJSS). The two took their oath of office and loyalty during a ceremony at the Palace of Justice here. Earlier in the morning, Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh was appointed and sworn in as the Chief Justice (CJ) of Malaysia at Istana Negara. Tan Sri Hasnah Mohammed Hashim will continue on as Chief Judge of Malaya until her retirement in November; she was elevated to the judiciary's third-highest position last November. With these appointments, all four of Malaysia's top judicial positions have now been filled following the retirement of the previous CJ, PCA and CJSS earlier this month. This afternoon, six individuals were appointed as Court of Appeal judges, namely Shahnaz Sulaiman, Datin Evrol Mariette Peters, Ong Chee Kwan, Datuk Mohd Radzi Abdul Hamid, Leonard David Shim, and Nadzarin Wok Nordin. Bukit Puchong kidnapping: Two brothers charged after viral abduction video
KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 — Two brothers claimed trial at the Shah Alam Magistrates' Court today to charges of kidnapping and voluntarily causing hurt to a man from an incident in Bukit Puchong that went viral last week. V Kirtik Ram, 19, who works as a lorry attendant, and V Theshvinram, 18, a delivery rider, were jointly charged with abducting a 21-year-old man, Free Malaysia Today reported. The alleged abduction took place on July 22 at 6.38pm at Jalan Persiaran Permai, Bukit Puchong, in Puchong. Prosecutors alleged the brothers intended to secretly and wrongfully confine the victim. They were charged under Section 365 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum prison term of seven years and a fine upon conviction. The brothers also face a second charge of voluntarily causing hurt to the same individual. This second charge falls under Section 323 of the Penal Code and carries a maximum sentence of one year's imprisonment, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both. The court granted bail at RM5,000 each for the kidnapping charge and RM2,000 each for the charge of causing hurt, with mention set for September 8. On July 23, a 15 second video showing several people forcing a man into the back of a box van spread over social media.
