Interior will oversee oil decommissioning in marine sanctuary
The Trump administration is giving an offshore regulatory agency new authority over decommissioning oil and gas sites in a recently created marine sanctuary off California's central coast.
The Interior Department said Thursday that its Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement is now the lead federal agency to oversee retiring oil and gas platforms in the Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary. The 4,543-square-mile swath of the Pacific Ocean became protected near the end of the Biden administration. Oil and gas decommissioning oversight for the area had been under the Department of Commerce.
'This is a strong example of interagency collaboration to streamline permitting and promote responsible energy development while honoring our commitment to environmental protection,' said Interior's acting Assistant Secretary for Land and Minerals Management, Adam Suess, in a statement. 'By leveraging BSEE's regulatory expertise, we can ensure that offshore decommissioning activities within the sanctuary are conducted safely and efficiently.'

BSEE is charged with leading safety and environmental protection related to offshore energy activities on the U.S. Outer Continental Shelf. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, which is also part of Interior, manages the development of resources in that offshore region.

Reddit now lets you hide content, like posts and comments, from your user profile
Reddit on Tuesday announced a new feature that will offer its users more privacy when it comes to what's shared on their user profiles. The company says it's rolling out an update that will introduce a 'Content and Activity' setting that allows users to decide which content from the subreddits they participate in will appear on their profiles. This includes both their posting and commenting history. By default, all posts and comments will remain visible, as before. However, the new setting allows users to hide all their public posts and comments, including those made directly on their profiles. Alternately, users can decide to selectively display posts and comments from specific communities on their profile, while keeping others hidden. The setting is available under a new 'Curate your profile' section, where users can control their content's visibility. An option to toggle on or off NSFW content and activity is also available, as is a Followers toggle to show or hide follower count. Image Credits:Reddit The update adds a layer of privacy to Reddit that wasn't previously available. Previously, many Reddit users created 'throwaway' accounts when they wanted to ask more personal questions. But as Reddit morphs into more of an ad-focused tech company post-IPO, it likely prefers that user data — like engagement and interests — remains associated with a single user profile for better ad targeting. Berkeley, CA | REGISTER NOW The feature's addition could also encourage users to participate more on the site, as they'll now know that they can somewhat obscure their activity from public view. For example, users may want to chime in or ask questions about a topic of a more sensitive nature, like relationship or dating advice, or a health issue they're facing. Before, they may have chosen to just read through others' posts but not engage directly in order to keep the information from displaying on their own user profiles. Image Credits:Reddit Reddit says that the option to hide or display posts and comments is available only on a per-community basis, not at the individual post or comment level. That makes the settings easier to manage, even if it means you can't pick and choose which specific comments and posts show up and which don't. Still, users should know that the curation option doesn't mean they have true privacy. Their username will still appear next to their posts and comments in the communities themselves. Plus, some moderators will still have access to a user's public post and comment history for 28 days, regardless of the user's content visibility settings, Reddit says. This access is helpful to moderators who may need to review a user's history when they post or comment, as well as when they send modmail, like join requests, or requests to join a restricted community. Profile owners will also be able to temporarily see a user's full post and comment history if another user comments directly on their profile post, the company notes. Image Credits:Reddit Alongside this change, Reddit introduced updated personal activity summaries, which provide an overview of a user's activity, including their Karma count, total contributions, account age, and active communities. The latter will be based on their Content and activity settings.

2 West Covina women arrested for alleged $4.8 million hospice care fraud
The U.S. Department of Justice announced that two West Covina women were arrested Tuesday for an alleged scheme to defraud Medicare of $4.8 million with false hospice care claims. One of the women who was arrested is the owner and operator of two West Covina hospices, Golden Meadows Hospice Inc., and D'Alexandria Hospice Inc., which billed Medicare for hospice services for patients who were allegedly not terminally ill. Between Sept. 2018 and Oct. 2022, owner and operator Normita Sierra, 71, and an accomplice, Rowena Elegado, 55, collected more than $3.8 million from Medicare on false claims, the DOJ said. Sierra, of West Covina, is charged with nine counts of healthcare fraud, one count of conspiracy, and four counts of illegal remuneration for healthcare referrals. Elegado, also of West Covina, is charged with one count of conspiracy, and four counts of illegal remuneration for health care referrals. Sierra and Elegado allegedly worked together to pay marketers to recruit patients to the hospices, knowing that most of those patients had not been referred by their primary care physicians for such services. According to the DOJ, once enrolled, the fraudulent patients rarely died in hospice care and were often discharged after six months, with payouts reaching as much as $1,300 per patient each month they stayed in hospice service. Others involved in the alleged scheme include Carl Bernardo, 53, of Chino, who pleaded guilty in September 2024 to one count of receiving kickbacks in connection with a federal health care program, and Relyndo Salcedo, 60, of Fontana, a nurse practitioner who pleaded guilty on May 22 to one count of health care fraud. According to the DOJ, Salcedo was pressured to admit ineligible patients into the hospice and then exaggerated and falsified the patients' conditions to make them seem terminally ill. If convicted of the charges, Sierra would face a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison for each count of healthcare fraud. Sierra and Elegado would face up to five years in federal prison for the conspiracy count and up to 10 years in federal prison for each illegal kickback count. The United States Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General and the FBI investigated the matter.
