Joey Jones remembered as "incredible human being" in emotional service for Wrexham legend
Football legend Joey Jones was remembered as an 'incredible human being' at an emotional memorial service today. Sir Kenny Dalglish led a huge number of former Liverpool, Chelsea, Wrexham and Huddersfield Town players to attend.
Jones' close friends and former Wales and Chelsea team-mates Mickey Thomas and Eddie Niedzwiecki both broke down in tears as they paid their own personal tributes. It was an extraordinary day here in Wrexham as 2000 fans listened to speakers recall their memories of the 'legend' Jones died aged 70 last month.
His coffin was carried out of the stadium by ex team-mates including Ian Rush, Kevin Ratcliffe and Niedzwecki to the sound of Gerry and the Pacemakers 'You'll never Walk Alone.'
Some fans were crying as they said goodbye to their hero. The defender was immortalised when Liverpool supporters memorably unfurled a banner at the 1977 European Cup final against Borussia Monchengladbach having already beaten Saint Etienne and FC Zurich.
It famously read: "Joey Ate The Frogs Legs, Made The Swiss Roll, Now He's Munching Gladbach." The original banner was fixed to seats behind one of the goals.
Among the other Liverpool players to attend were Ian Callaghan, Howard Gayle and David Fairclough. Chelsea were represented by Mark Hughes, Thomas, Niedzwiecki, Colin Lee and Gary Chivers.
Wrexham legend Arfon Griffiths led a huge contingent of former home town players
Niedzwiecki sald: 'they don't make them like our Joey Joey would help anyone He was a cult hero for Chelsea.'
He recalled a match between Liverpool and Chelsea at Anfield when Jones was sub for the Blues and both sets of fans chanted his name as he was so revered. Thomas drew sustained spontaneous applause when he called for a statue of Jones to be erected in Wrexham and called Jones who he had known since he was 14 as 'an incredible human being.'
Liverpool.s club chaplain. Bill Bygroves recalled how Jones was a childhood Liverpool supporter and had 'Liver Bird tattoo' on his arm. He said the club and its owners sent 'heartfelt condolences" and said Jones was a 'good and humble man' and would live forever in the hearts of Liverpool fans.
He said the date Jones was signed for Liverpool for just £110,000 on 14th July 1975 was a great day in the club's history. Dozens of Chelsea fans made the long trip north to pay their respects. Chelsea fan, and author, Kelvin Barker said: 'Joey was a cult hero for us at Chelsea and I know he was the same at the other clubs he played for.
'It's an honour to pay our respects alongside Wrexham, Liverpool and Huddersfield supporters. It's rare that one player can be such a hero at so many clubs -that's a real testament to Joey as a football player but more importantly as a fantastic man.'
Greig Sarath, 57, from St Ives, Cambs, said: 'I had to be here to pay my respects to one of Chelsea's greatest ever characters. 'He will never be forgotten at Stamford Bridge. I'm so pleased I saw quite a few Chelsea shirts here.'
The mourners were treated to passionate singing from the Fron Male Voice choir who sang the Welsh National Anthem and Abide with Me.
The family asked that donations in memory of Joey are made to the British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK, Dementia UK and Dogs Trust.

Enzo Maresca hopes Chelsea can improve their conversion rate to aid title hopes
The Blues have spent around £160million on attacking players, all of whom played some part in Sunday's lacklustre 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge. Despite a new look forward line, the difficulty the home side had in breaking down Palace bore hallmarks familiar to supporters who frequently watched their team labour to create and convert opportunities last season. Chelsea ranked second in last season's Premier League in terms of big chances missed and placed 11th in percentage of shots scored. Their tally of 64 league goals was beaten by Brighton and Brentford and matched by 17th-place Tottenham, whilst champions Liverpool outscored Maresca's team by 22. 'I don't know if we (now) have more capacity (to score), but for sure if we've made changes it's because we think that with changes we could improve out attacking phase,' said Maresca. 'I was quite happy last year in terms goals we scored but with the amount of chances we created, I think we were one of the best in the league.' Strikers Liam Delap and Joao Pedro have been brought in to try and revitalise an attack which relied too heavily on goals from defence and midfield during the last campaign, though both players struggled to make an impact in the draw with Palace. Nicolas Jackson was the team's only senior striker last season but suffered a goal drought which lasted almost five months between December and May, whilst teenager Marc Guiu failed to score in the league. Both players also spent significant time out injured. Neither is set to play a role at Stamford Bridge this season with Jackson having been told he can leave and Guiu currently on loan at Sunderland. 'Hopefully also this season we can be a bit more lucky in terms injury,' said Maresca. 'Don't forget last season we lost Nico and Guiu. But if we are able to create the same volume (of chances) that we created last year I'm quite happy. Liam Delap, left, and Joao Pedro have bolstered Chelsea's attacking options (John Walton/PA) 'Hopefully this season we can be more clinical when we need to be.' Maresca reiterated the club's position on Jackson, who scored just 10 league goals last season, and has been made surplus to requirements following the arrivals of Delap and Pedro. The 24-year-old, who was suspended for the draw with Palace, will not play in Friday's trip to West Ham and has drawn interested from Newcastle, who are waiting for a resolution to their stand-off with Alexander Isak before deciding whether to move. 'We've brought two strikers,' said Maresca. 'The player (Jackson) is open to leave. If there is any good solution, he is going to leave. Nicolas Jackson will not play when Chelsea visit West Ham (Rafal Oleksiewicz/PA) 'It's very easy. It's not complicated. I've said already that Nico is a very good player. He can be even better.' On the new arrivals, the Italian added: 'Pedro probably in the small space gives us more than Liam. Liam probably gives us a bit more in terms of physicality and runs in behind. It depends on the gameplan. 'On Sunday it was difficult for any striker, but both are good and both are going to score goals.' Chelsea have accepted a £26million offer from Villarreal for defender Renato Veiga, the PA news agency understands. The Portugal left-back's departure would take Chelsea's total player sales this summer to over £250m. Renato Veiga is set to leave Chelsea for Villarreal (Adam Davy/PA) The Blues are poised to make a hefty profit on the 22-year-old having paid £12m for him when he arrived from Basel in July 2024. Veiga, who signed a seven-year contract with Chelsea, made just one Premier League start for them last season and six appearances off the bench. He spent the second half of the 2024-25 campaign on loan at Juventus, making 12 starts in Serie A. Chelsea have so far sold 10 players this summer and should Veiga complete his move, they will have recouped around £252m from 11 departures to offset the £277m they have spent on nine new players.

Neville highlights 'big question' that could cost Arsenal the Premier League
Gary Neville says there is so much to 'admire' about Mikel Arteta's Arsenal, but there remains a 'big question' over their capacity to play expansively and score the goals needed to win the title. The Gunners have finished runners-up in each of the previous three seasons in the Premier League, with Liverpool topping the tree to end Manchester City's sustained period of dominance last time out. And while Arsenal have undoubtedly evolved into a defensive force under Arteta, the lack of a major trophy since their FA Cup triumph in 2020 means the Spaniard finds himself under mounting pressure to deliver the goods. With that in mind, Arsenal's hierarchy have given Arteta significant financial backing across a busy summer, in which Martin Zubimendi, Viktor Gyokeres, Cristhian Mosquera, Christian Norgaard, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Noni Madueke have all arrived through the doors. Eberechi Eze looks certain to become the seventh signing of the transfer window after Arsenal hijacked Tottenham's deal at the 11th hour. The Crystal Palace midfielder is set to sign for a fee of £60million plus add-ons over the coming days. Metro's weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. The weight of expectation on Gyokeres, in particular, though, has been a hot topic of conversation at the start of the campaign, with the Swede tasked with scoring the goals required to lead the club to silverware once again. It proved a difficult first outing for Gyokeres away to Manchester United last weekend and the striker will be eager to silence his doubters when Arsenal return to action against Leeds in two days time. Asked about the Gunners' title chances on the Unfiltered Soccer podcast, Neville said: 'There's a lot to admire about Arsenal. 'Remember that period where we were all criticising them a good few years back, when they were quite flimsy and they'd concede goals and they'd give leads away? 'Now, they're probably the only team I can think of in the league – and one of the few and rare teams in world football – that really you can trust when they go a goal up. 'It's an old principle of teams maybe 15, 20 years ago that they could defend leads and they could be really focussed and concentrated on the defensive side of the game.' To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video For a third year on the spin, Neville has backed Arsenal to finally end their long wait to lift the Premier League trophy. But while Neville has confidence in Arsenal's defensive solidity and set-piece nous, he believes there remain 'question marks' over the side's firepower up front. 'They're like a bit of a throwback to an old Italian team at times with the long throws, set-pieces, compact, don't give a lot of space away,' the legendary ex-Manchester United and England right-back continued. 'They've also got the dark arts of the game where the manager is trying to waste time and the players are going down feigning injury. They've got a bit of that going on so they're wise. 'Carra [Jamie Carragher] actually said something interesting, that they remind him of that Rafa Benitez Liverpool team that had those qualities, but they didn't have the star quality and flair up front to score the goals and win the league over a 38-game season. 'It started to play on my mind a little bit because I've gone for Arsenal again this year [to win the title]. 'I've gone for them the last three years and they've finished second and I've gone for them again just because of the fear of missing out if I didn't go for them and they won it! I wouldn't be able to forgive myself! [laughs]' Neville added: 'There's part of me that looks at them and thinks: [Gabriel] Martinelli has dipped a little bit, [Martin] Odegaard is a good player but is he going to score the goals that they need? I think Gyokeres will do okay, but is he going to score 20 goals? [Bukayo] Saka's obviously got to stay fit. More Trending 'So there are question marks up top about them and that's the big question: can they get the goals and can they be expansive enough to win games and do what Liverpool and Manchester City will do, which is go and outscore teams and times?' Arsenal supporters are nervously awaiting updates on Kai Havertz's fitness after it emerged that the German had sustained a knee injury which could keep him sidelined for a significant period. Arteta is likely to provide some clarification when he faces the media on Friday afternoon ahead of the Gunners' second match of the season at home to newly promoted Leeds. Daniel Farke's men will be looking to pick up where they left off on their return to the top flight after a late Lukas Nmecha penalty saw them edge out Everton on Monday night. Aston Villa step up efforts to sign £60m Chelsea star with Premier League rivals also interested
Aston Villa are stepping up their efforts to sign Chelsea forward Nicolas Jackson if they can make the finances work. Unai Emery 's side are cautious of overstepping the Premier League 's profit and sustainability rules (PSR) this summer as the manager seeks to refine his squad. Last week saw Villa sell academy graduate Jacob Ramsey to Newcastle in a bid to keep in line with regulations, just one month after the club were fined £9.5m for breaching UEFA's financial rules. Tyrone Mings and John McGinn both shared cryptic messages on social media in the wake of the sale which suggested that there may have been some unwillingness on both Ramsey and the club's behalf to end their partnership. But change is set to continue apace at Villa Park ahead of the transfer window closing in September. Chelsea are similarly motivated to get a number of deals done over the next two weeks, with Jackson among the nine players that Maresca is keen to offload to trim his overflowing squad. Make your 7 picks by 12.30pm every Saturday to win £1,000* Man City Fri Aug 2211:30 V Tottenham *18+, excludes NI. Terms and conditions apply Jackson is valued at over £60m and Villa initially asked about a loan with options to buy. But the Villans have been interested in the Senegal star for some time, with Emery having previously worked with the striker during his time at Villarreal in Spain. At Stamford Bridge, Jackson has been pushed down the front-line pecking order with the arrival of flashy summer purchases Joao Pedro and Liam Delap, with the 23-year-old absent entirely from Maresca's first squad to face Crystal Palace last Sunday. His move comes less than a year after signing a bumper nine-year contract extension - one season on from his Blues debut - designed to keep him at the club until 2033. Jackson scored 17 goals in his debut Premier League season and 10 in his second, but his at-times erratic playing style and hot-headedness drew as much criticism as praise he received from his manager.
