After starting the season unranked, the Spartans won the Big Ten regular season and earned a No. 2 seed in the NCAA tournament. No. 10 seed New Mexico gave them a scare and led for the entire first half in Sunday's second-round game. But Michigan State was the stronger team down the stretch and pulled away late for a 71-63 win.
Jaden Akins led the way with 16 points, while Tre Holloman tallied 14 points, four assists, three steals and a block off the bench. Frankie Fidler added 10 points off the bench including a stretch of six straight Michigan State points as the Spartans pulled away in the second half.
Michigan State advances to face No. 6 seed Ole Miss, which dominated No. 3 seed Iowa State on Sunday to secure its own Sweet 16 berth.
After trailing the entire first half, Michigan State has been the clearly better team late in the second. The Spartans lead 63-54 at the final TV timeout with a chance to take this one home and into the Sweet 16.
It's a back-and-forth battle between Michigan State and New Mexico. But the Spartans have landed the last few blows.

No. 6 Ole Miss has been an underdog in both of its games — and come out with two outright victories to move on to the Sweet 16. The Rebels (+5.5) dominated No. 3 Iowa State, 91-78, covering for the spread for over 58 minutes of gametime.
The Rebels were up 11 at halftime and kept extending the lead, as Ole Miss had at least a 15-point lead for most of the half. The game went over the total of 144.5.
The Rebels advance to their first Sweet 16 since 2001, and they become the SEVENTH SEC team to advance to the Round of 16. That's the most ever by a single conference in the same NCAA tournament.

Arizona Diamondbacks Expected to Slash Payroll in 2026, Examining Impact on Offseason
The Arizona Diamondbacks entered the regular season with aspirations of being one of the best teams in the National League, led by a deep roster that featured the likes of Eugenio Suarez, Josh Naylor, and Merrill Kelly. Instead, all three players were dealt at the MLB trade deadline, and even more changes are coming. Burnes underwent Tommy John surgery in June, a procedure that is expected to sideline him for a majority of the 2026 MLB season. To make matters worse, for a team that fell out of contention during the summer, many of its top players (Naylor, Suarez, Kelly, and Zac Gallen) were all on expiring contracts. Hall noted that the money will be 'reinvested' in the club, but it was also made clear that Arizona won't approach the $180-plus million payroll it had coming into the year. However, that doesn't include raises in arbitration for players like Ryne Nelson, Gabriel Moreno, Alek Thomas, Jake McCarthy, Pavin Smith, and pre-arbitration raises for younger players. So, while some of the money might be invested into next season's roster, it is unlikely that Gallen is re-signed or that either Suarez or Naylor returns to the club via free agency. With last winter's big free-agent addition also expected to miss most of next season, ownership will likely be even more cautious with spending on top free agents this winter. Despite All-Star second baseman Ketel Marte delivering outstanding production, it appears that certain members of the Diamondbacks' roster aren't happy with him. According to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic, several unnamed Diamondbacks players are 'frustrated' by Marte's 'tendency to miss games.' While injuries play a part in that, some in the clubhouse reportedly took issue with the 31-year-old's absence due to a 'situation' around the All-Star Break. 'For the past month, teammates and others in the organization have quietly grumbled about his propensity to ask for days off. They were frustrated by the time off he requested following the burglary of his home, with some believing his departure around the All-Star break set in motion the collapse that led to the Diamondbacks' trade deadline sell-off.' Former Oregon center N'Faly Dante signs 2-year deal with Atlanta Hawks
Former Oregon Ducks men's basketball center N'Faly Dante has signed a two-year, $4.5 million deal with the Atlanta Hawks, per USA Today's Michael Scotto. Dante spent his rookie season on a two-way deal with the Houston Rockets, primarily competing for the Rio Grand Valley Vipers in the G League. He averaged 15.1 points, 9.8 rebounds, 2.2 blocks and 1.0 steals per game on 74.3% shooting from the field with the Vipers. He also appeared in four games for the Rockets, averaging 6.0 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game in limited minutes. Prior to beginning his pro career, Dante was a five-star recruit out of Wichita, KS when he committed to Oregon. He went on to spend five seasons with the Ducks, becoming a consistent contributor in his junior season. Dante broke out during his senior campaign, scoring 17.0 points, grabbing 9.2 rebounds and blocking 1.9 shots per game. He finished his five-year Oregon career as a two-time first-team All-Pac-12 member and a Pac-12 All-Defensive Team selection in 2024. He was also named the Pac-12 Tournament Most Outstanding Player in 2024, helping lead the Ducks to the final Pac-12 tournament title. Now on a standard contract with the Hawks, Dante will provide depth behind presumed starting center Kristaps Porzingis and reserve big man Onyeka Okongwu. Rookie Asa Newell and third-year man Mouhamed Gueye will also be competing for minutes down low.
