Knowledge of tartans' origins vital to grasp our history
In each period, anyone and everyone had to be perfectly correct in what clothing we wore, what armaments we used, and if we partook in living history camping, then what domestic utensils, bedding and container chests were used. Men, women and children of all ages.
In order to succeed in this important aspect, England had a living history market twice a year where ready-made equipment could be purchased from experts in their field or, the correct material could also be purchased to create your own wardrobe etc.

The point of all this is that historical knowledge was the backbone necessary to, not only wear the correct garb, but to have learned about its origins. Such as with the material for the great kilt of the 18th century.
Reading was obviously the necessary source for information and from various sources of authoritative writers.
For myself, I learnt that with clans, regardless of which glen they dwelt, most had a local wool spinner and weaver. The colour used in dying the wool came from natural source as in vegetation or crushed stone.
This was more or less the origin of how different clans, no matter how related to each other, had their variations of so-called colour and weave of wool into the criss-cross pattern we associate as tartan.
Homemade dyes would been quiet pale in some cases. I tried it myself using onion and carrot. The weave would also have been varied according to the choice of the weaver.
I expect there might be contradiction to my resourced information, but there was a general consensus amongst us re-enactors, wherever we came from, during discussions about our hobby around the evening campfires.
Ideas were shared and information appreciated.

THE letter by Gordon Ian MacLeod in the Sunday National (July 27) referencing John McGrath's great play, brought to mind a recent article in the Daily Mail regarding an ongoing case at the Court of Session where the parties in dispute are a wealthy (non-Scottish) landowner and a large energy company (also non-Scottish).
The dispute concerned constraint payments – credits given to energy companies to turn off wind turbines when either the demand for electricity is low or the grid cannot get the electricity to where it can be used.
Remarkably it turns out that these credits can be traded between energy companies and the landowner obviously wanted his cut of what was produced on his land – despite it being non-existent!
Is there a playwright out there who can give us 'The cheviot, the stag and the imaginary electricity' for 2025?
The lessons from the original play have obviously not yet cut through.

NOW that I am no longer a member of the SNP and my once treasured badge of honour, my plastic membership card, has been cut
up and awaits recycling, I can't help but think that it is perhaps ironic that it took Mhairi Black to spur me into doing something I should have done a long time earlier.
It will not matter to the SNP that another member has left because they don't listen to us anyway!
That is a sad indication of the state of play for all us independence supporters.
At least I got a good laugh when two plonkers had a chat on Monday.
As the president of the free world ranted that he didn't like all sorts of people and other stuff, including windmills and the Labour mayor of London, perhaps the Prime Minister should have told the president that windmills were very, very important because they sent power to England from Scotland down south so that the poor Scots could be charged exorbitant prices to buy it back!
He could also have told the president, who said that he wanted Scotland to thrive, that he, the UK Prime Minister, would never ever allow that to happen as England would be screwed if Scotland were to become independent.
It is nauseating to say the least watching people letting themselves be humiliated by a convicted felon posing as some sort of messiah.
I might not be a member of the SNP anymore but I am still a proud Scot.
As such I have to say that I think we are better than all this.

Disney World guests rushed to hospital after boat crash
A horrific ferry boat crash at Disney World has reportedly resulted in multiple guests having to be rushed to the hospital. According to a witness, the boat was bringing families from the Magic Kingdom to the Transportation and Ticket Center on Wednesday night during a massive storm, when it suddenly 'hit something.' As they were approaching the Transportation and Ticket Center he said the boat 'hit something all of a sudden.' 'When we hit whatever we hit, everyone was thrown forward and the metal trash cans and recycling bins were thrown forward onto strollers and little kids,' he explained. 'There were little kids screaming and [I] noticed that a boy was pinned under the trash cans so [everyone] quickly lifted them up.' Footage shared exclusively with the Daily Mail by Larry of the aftermath shows hoards of terrified families huddling on the boat moments after the crash. Some are seen on the ground with screaming and crying heard in the background. He said that after the boat pulled into the dock and guests rushed off to safety 'not a word was said from the captains or Disney cast members.' 'There were furious screaming parents and all these employees were doing was saying, "You'll have to take it up with guest services when they open," or, "Call guest services,"' Larry told the Daily Mail. 'Lots of kids were shaken up and holding their parents while crying. There were people bleeding and parents sitting on the floor holding their children waiting for EMTs. It was a very chaotic site.' Tami Hackett, from Houston, Texas, was also on the ferry when it crashed, along with her daughter, her daughter's husband, and their twin three-year-old daughters. 'Suddenly we crashed into something and we all went flying forward falling,' she told the Daily Mail. 'The stroller landed on its back causing the girls to hit their heads. My house burned down after I made a VERY basic mistake in the kitchen
A woman has candidly detailed how a simple mistake in the kitchen completely altered her life. Kyndall Zachary thought nothing of it when she put a brownie on a paper plate to warm it in the microwave. The 22-year-old accidentally pressed two minutes instead of the intended 20 seconds and, when she opened the appliance, found it filled with smoke. 'I grabbed the paper plate of brownies and ran them under water and then threw them away in the trash can,' the North Carolina student told the Daily Mail. Kyndall had also wiped the kitchen counter off with a paper towel before placing that in the trash can too, which was located under the counter in a cupboard. 'Forty-five minutes later, after I cleared all the smoke out by opening the doors and having fans going, I go to my room and am about to go to bed,' she said. 'I thought everything was fine,' she admitted. 'I kept the fans going and I took my two small dogs with me.' Kyndall was almost asleep when she heard a 'weird beeping' sound before getting up to investigate what it was. 'I walked out of my room and turned the corner to see a bright orange glow, smoke and heard crackling of the fire coming from the kitchen,' she said. 'I sprinted back in my room called 911 grabbed my two small dogs that were with me.' The quick-thinking young woman, who instantly knew she had to evacuate, alerted her brother who was in the basement and ran out the front door. According to Kyndall, the fire started in the trash can almost an hour after she had thrown the brownie away. 'It got too hot in the trash can, mixed with paper towels also in the trash can it started a spark,' she explained. 'The scary part is that the beeping wasn't even the fire alarm because the fire alarm never went off,' she added. 'The fire possibly tripped the power of the microwave and that was the beeping that made me get up,' she explained. 'The fire department said had it been a few more minutes it would have been an entirely different story.' Kyndall suffers from PSTD from the incident, admitting she has had panic attacks and nightmares about my house catching on fire again. 'I refuse to cook anything right now, I can't look at or even smell anything fire related right now,' she said. Kyndall, who has three siblings, said she is unsure where her family will go now. 'It's scary to think the fire started almost an hour after I ran the brownies under water and threw them away,' she mused. 'I would have never imagined I walk out of my room to see my entire kitchen engulfed in flames.' She thanked her local fire department for their speed. 'They informed me that this was completely unintentional and a freak accident, anytime in the future I would absolutely put it in almost a pool of water for hours before I throw anything hot away again,' she declared. In 2023, the National Fire Protection Association reported a whopping 44 percent of all house fires started in the kitchen. Ranges or cooktops were involved in 53 percent of the reported home cooking fires, 88 percent of cooking fire deaths, and 74 percent of cooking fire injuries. Households with electric ranges had a higher risk of cooking fires and associated losses than those with gas ranges. Unattended cooking was the leading factor contributing to cooking fires and casualties. Clothing was the item first ignited in less than one percent of these fires, but clothing ignition led to seven percent of the home cooking fire deaths. More than one-quarter of the people killed by cooking fires were asleep when they were fatally injured. More than half of the non-fatal injuries occurred when people tried to control the fire themselves.
