Rams revival under Eustace 'nothing short of remarkable'

Rams revival under Eustace 'nothing short of remarkable'

BBC News04-04-2025

The first half against Preston North End proved to be typical post-international break display - very stop-start, plenty of sloppy play from both sides. This set up a pretty bleak atmosphere inside Pride Park, with neither set of supporters having much to really get excited about. The half-time whistle blew and the collective yawns in the stands just about summed it up. John Eustace's half-time team talk no doubt focused on trying to break down Preston's rigid low block, with more energy and attacking intent.Whatever was said, it definitely helped. With only three minutes of the second half played, Mr Derby County himself, Craig Forsyth, slotted home beautifully in the box following a corner that was headed down into his path by Nat Phillips. A goal from the veteran left-back, taken like a striker in his prime. The South Stand bounced, chants of "the Rams are staying up" rang out all around Pride Park and, before they knew it, Derby had a second just four minutes later.Another goal created by the head of Phillips, this time bundled in by Jerry Yates five yards out, pretty much killed the game off - which is something we haven't been able to say many times this season. Derby had struggled for so long under Paul Warne to take the lead and double it, often finding themselves caught out by being too negative after going ahead. However, since the arrival of Eustace the Rams have become much better at smelling blood and getting the insurance goal to end the contest. The new boss is getting the best out of this group of players, increasing their confidence and performance levels as the weeks go on.
Pride Park was electric at full-time, with fans staying behind to celebrate with Eustace and the team as they climbed out of the relegation zone.Jacob Zetterstrom did his signature roly-poly in front of the South Stand to joyful chants. From the fans to the players to the staff, everyone is on the same page.Derby have suddenly become one of the Championship's most in-form teams. With the momentum, confidence, and desire this team are oozing at the moment, it's hard to know who will be able to stop them. Suddenly survival looks much more likely for the Rams than the other six teams in the relegation picture. The job that Eustace is doing with this Derby County side, who looked all but down and out just a few weeks ago, is nothing short of remarkable. You can often catch Amelia Warren, external as a guest on BBC Radio Derby.

Hull name Sergej Jakirovic as new boss after reaching agreement with Kayserispor

The 48-year-old Bosnian joins on a two-year deal, with the option of a further 12 months, after the Tigers agreed a settlement with Turkish side Kayserispor. Jakirovic had only been in Turkey since January, having previously led Dinamo Zagreb to qualification for the Champions League, and succeeds Ruben Selles, who was dismissed last month after Hull narrowly avoided relegation from the Championship. Chairman Acun Ilicali said on 'We are delighted to secure the services of Sergej. Sergej's our man. 🤝 Welcoming our new head coach! 🇧🇦#hcafc — Hull City (@HullCity) June 11, 2025 'We believe in the football that he will bring to the MKM Stadium for us and, importantly, he has proven himself to be a winner throughout his career. 'My dream for our club has never changed from the first day I took over, and I believe in Sergej as we look forward to the 2025/26 Sky Bet Championship campaign together as one family.' Jakirovic's backroom team of Marko Salatovic, Marin Ivancic and Andjelo Roguljic join him in moving from Kayserispor, while first-team coach Andy Dawson and goalkeeping coach Erbil Bozkurt remain on the staff. A former midfielder and Bosnia international, Jakirovic began his managerial career with Sesvete in the Croatian second tier before moving on to Gorica, Maribor, Zrinjski Mostar and Rijeka. Hull finished the season in 21st place in the Championship, staying up at the expense of Luton on goal difference.

Clear Cardiff City manager favourite emerges after double setback

Clear Cardiff City manager favourite emerges after double setback The Bluebirds are yet to appoint a new permanent manager after sacking Omer Riza nearly two months ago Buckingham is now the clear favourite to take the Cardiff job Des Buckingham is now the odds-on favourite to take the Cardiff City job as the end of the club's manager search saga draws nearer. The Bluebirds are still in the hunt for a permanent successor to Omer Riza since he was dismissed in the closing stages of last season, as the club were relegated to League One. A shortlist, using the help of an external agency, was drawn up for Vincent Tan's consideration, but nearly eight weeks on from Riza's departure and with pre-season getting under way next month, an appointment is yet to be made. ‌ After Nathan Jones signed a new long-term deal with Charlton to end speculation linking him with the Cardiff job, midfielder Aaron Ramsey, who took charge of the team as interim manager for the final three matches of their dismal Championship campaign, looked likely to take up the reins at his boyhood club on a permanent basis. ‌ However, in bombshell news over the weekend, it was reported that Ramsey will now up sticks and move to Mexico to join Liga MX side Pumas, with the Wales legend "ready for a new chapter" across the Atlantic, according to the Press Association transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. An announcement regarding the Bluebirds' new boss was due at the start of the week, but, in the wake of the double setback, that didn't happen. However, there now finally looks to be light at the end of the tunnel with former Oxford United boss Buckingham emerging as the clear favourite for the job. The 40-year-old is now priced as 8/13 favourite by BetVictor, ahead of Leicester City coach Brian Barry-Murphy (6/5) and ex-Bolton boss Ian Evatt (6/1). Join the Cardiff City breaking news and top stories WhatsApp community Article continues below Buckingham, who has been out of work since being sacked by Oxford in December, was riding high in the bookies' odds for the Cardiff job around a month ago and is back in pole position with Jones and Ramsey now off the table. Having led the Us to League One promotion last year, he was always in the mix for the Bluebirds gig and was involved in the interview process which concluded at the end of last month. Buckingham has also been linked with the vacant post at Plymouth Argyle, who were also relegated to League One on the final day of the season. However, that job could well go to Barry-Murphy, who is now the bookies' favourite to take over at Home Park. ‌ The Irishman, who is currently a first-team coach at Leicester, is currently evens with BetVictor to take to the Argyle dugout, in what would be his second major role after leaving Rochdale in 2021. Barry-Murphy is ahead of Tom Cleverley, Jack Wilshere and Buckingham in the odds for the Plymouth job, as well as Evatt, who left Bolton in January. While Cardiff said that a new process to select the next manager made them hopeful of appointing a new boss by the end of May, the process has dragged on with Tan accused of treating fans with "contempt". In a statement released earlier this week, Cardiff City Supporters Trust described the delay as "intolerable", with fans "concerned and angry" about the situation. ‌ "Time is moving on, critical pre-season decisions need to be made in terms of the squad which cannot happen without a manager," the statement read. "It is as long ago as 19 April that Omer Riza was relieved of his duties and 3 May was the final game of the season and it is 10 June that this communication is being written with still no sign of an appointment. "As the ultimate power within the club does Vincent Tan have a sense of urgency? The club may say that there is no reason to panic but it is fair to say that the fanbase view the situation with some concern and anger. Article continues below "That fact that there has been a deafening silence from the club has not been helpful... we are led to believe that the current state of inertia/indecision is purely down to the owner [Tan] and... [chief executive] Ken Choo." It continued: "This situation is intolerable and only serves to demonstrate the contempt the owner holds the fanbase in. We have no idea where we are in the process. Are the experts employed to assist in the job of finding a new manager still in the building? Are they continuing to advise? We hope they are but we just don't know. "We will continue to liaise with the club to try and urge them to improve communication as fans deserve to be treated better."

McIlroy insists patience will be key to master ‘impossible' Oakmont course

Rory McIlroy is leaving no stone unturned in his bid to overcome an 'impossible' Oakmont course and prosper at the US Open. McIlroy is looking to shake off a hangover from his US Masters triumph in April, where he completed his 11-year quest for a career grand slam of winning all four majors. That will not be easy at the unforgiving Oakmont Country Club in Pittsburgh, characterised by notoriously thick rough, especially as the 36-year-old is battling driver issues. He missed the cut when the US Open was last played here in 2016, but has been putting in the work ahead of Thursday's first round. He played at the course on a scouting mission last Monday, but probably wishes he had not bothered, as he shot an 81, while he has also been watching videos of Dustin Johnson's win here nine years ago. 'I'm glad we have spotters up there because I played last Monday just in Druck's (member Stanley Druckenmiller) outing, and you hit a ball off the fairway and you were looking for a good couple of minutes just to find it,' he said. 'It's very penal if you miss. Sometimes it's penal if you don't miss. But the person with the most patience and the best attitude this week is the one that's going to win. 'There's definitely been a little bit of rain since I played. Last Monday felt impossible. I birdied the last two holes for 81. It felt pretty good. It didn't feel like I played that bad. 'It's much more benign right now than it was that Monday. They had the pins in dicey locations, and greens were running fast. It was nearly impossible. 'If you put it in the fairway, it's certainly playable. But then you just have to think about leaving your ball below the hole and just trying to make as many pars as you can. 'You get yourself in the way of a few birdies, that's a bonus.' The club's own website labels it 'The Ultimate Examination of Championship Golf', but it is fair to say other descriptions of Oakmont have not been so flattering. Bryson DeChambeau, who pipped McIlroy to the title last year, called it the 'toughest golf course in the world right now'. 'You have to hit the fairways, you have to hit greens, and you have to two-putt, worst-case scenario,' he said. 'When you've got those putts inside 10 feet, you've got to make them. It's a great test of golf. 'I think everyone knows it's the toughest golf course in the world right now.' World number three Xander Schauffele thinks fans will get pleasure from seeing the top stars suffer. 'I don't think people turn the TV on to watch some of the guys just hit like a 200-yard shot on the green, you know what I mean?' Schauffele said. 'I think they turn on the US Open to see a guy shooting eight over and suffer. That's part of the enjoyment of playing in the US Open for viewers.'
