Key Naxal operative arrested from Rohtak in Haryana: NIA

Hindustan Times31-07-2025
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested a key Naxal operative from Haryana, who was 'actively working to promote anti-national activities', an official statement said on Wednesday. The NIA team seized a mobile phone with SIM card, one Tablet, two memory cards, and 'incriminating' documents related to the CPI(Maoist) from the accused, it said.
Priyanshu Kashyap, a native of the Naxal-infested Bastar district in Chhattisgarh and currently living in Rohtak district of Haryana, was nabbed on Tuesday on the basis of information provided by Haryana Police, the agency said.
The NIA team seized a mobile phone with SIM card, one Tablet, two memory cards, and 'incriminating' documents related to the CPI(Maoist) from the accused, it said.
Kashyap was found to be a member of the proscribed terrorist organisation CPI (Maoist), and was actively working to promote its anti-national activities as its area committee in-charge in Rohtak, the NIA statement alleged.
Leaders of CPI (Maoist) have been conspiring to re-energise the decrepit influence of the outfit in the Northern Regional Bureau (NRB), comprising Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, it said.
The conspiracy involves several underground and overground workers (OGWs) of the terror organisation, engaged in recruiting cadres and strengthening the outfit in the northern states, the NIA said.
Many front organisations and student wings are supporting the outfit's efforts to wage a war against the government of India, it claimed.
While the underground workers are in direct contact with senior leaders of CPI (Maoist), the OGWs operate in the guise of activists to further the nefarious agenda, the NIA said.
The workers were being provided funds from the Eastern Regional Bureau of the CPI (Maoist), especially from Jharkhand, NIA investigations have revealed.
The anti-terror agency had earlier arrested two other persons, Ajay Singhal alias Aman, in-charge of State Organising Committee (SOC) Haryana and Punjab, and Vishal Singh, member of CPI (Maoist), in the case.

NU students council poll among demands raised at Gadkari's Janata Darbar

Nagpur: The last election for Nagpur University (NU) student council was held in September 2019 and now demand is being made to conduct a fresh election. The demand was taken up on Sunday at Union Minister Nitin Gadkari's Janata Darbar, where other issues like space for a Muslim kabrastan, salaries for teachers in Naxal-affected border villages, and job reinstatement were also raised. National Students' Union of India (NSUI) district member Abdul Reheman claimed that student representation has weakened and left major issues unresolved at NU in absence of a students' council. "The union has renewed calls to continue with the "carry-on" system. This is about fairness and the future of thousands of students. We will push until the rules are revised and elections are held," Reheman said. He noted that while the student body's tenure is technically one year, the election process itself takes nearly two months, with official notices consuming another 6-8 months. "Gadkari has directed NU core committee member Vishnu Chande to look into the matter," said Rehemen. Some citizens present at the Janata Darbar sought urgent attention to their civic grievances. Farukh Sheikh from Jaripatka said the Muslim graveyard in his locality is full, forcing families to bury loved ones in distant areas. "A graveyard is not just land; it's the final resting place. Denying a place for it in one's own locality is against dignity," he said. "Now, I am selling tea outside the station. I am asking for the right to work with dignity," she said. A teacher from Bhandara appealed against reduced salaries for employees in Naxal-affected border villages, warning it demoralises staff despite lingering security risks. The Al Nushrat Foundation, which supports underprivileged children and families, sought Gadkari's help for an ambulance and computers to provide free Aadhaar, ration, and voter card services. Gadkari advised them to apply under govt schemes. Residents of Ghughus, Chandrapur, demanded completion of the long-delayed flyover near Rajiv Ratan Chowk railway crossing, saying the four-year delay has led to congestion and accidents. Mala Meshram, a local resident, recalled a mother and newborn died at the crossing, underscoring the urgent need for action. Education is their weapon.' He was speaking an event held on the Tamil Nadu Open University campus at Saidapet here in honour of former Manonmaniam Sundaranar University Vice-Chancellor V. Dipankar slams EC over revision of electoral rolls

Patna: CPI(ML) general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya on Sunday accused the Election Commission (EC) of "daylight robbery" of votes through its special intensive revision (SIR) of Bihar's electoral roll ahead of the state assembly elections. He urged people to defend their democratic rights, describing the situation as "an open EC versus the people of India challenge." Bhattacharya linked his party's concerns to opposition leader Rahul Gandhi's expose of alleged "vote theft" in Bengaluru during the 2024 general elections. Referring to the EC's affidavit in the Supreme Court concerning removal of 6.5 million electors from Bihar's rolls, Bhattacharya said the EC had "stubbornly rejected" the court's advice to disclose supporting documents. He criticised the EC for inconsistent data releases during the SIR, highlighting jumps in numbers of 'probably deceased' electors from 1.43 million to 2.2 million and 'permanently shifted' voters from 1.97 million to 3.6 million. Bhattacharya also pointed out the unexplained decline in electors registered at several locations, alleging manipulation in the revision process.
