UPDATE: All clear issued for ‘gas odor' on U of I campus

CHAMPAIGN-URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — The University of Illinois Police Department said the 'emergency has ended' and that it is 'safe to resume regular activities' after an Illini-Alert was issued Thursday afternoon.
The Urbana Fire Department investigated several buildings after they received reports of a gas odor on the northeast side of campus. The Urbana Fire Department told UIPD they did not find a threat to the campus community's safety.
The all-clear Illini-Alert was issued just before 3 p.m.
CHAMPAIGN-URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — The Urbana Fire Department is actively responding to a call reporting a 'gas odor' on the University of Illinois campus.
According to an Illini-Alert sent out to the campus community, the reports said the gas odor is coming from the northeast area of campus.

A spokesperson for the University of Illinois Police Department said the fire department is checking multiple buildings, but so far, 'a life-safety threat has not been identified.'
WCIA reached out to the Urbana Fire Department for more information and is waiting to hear back. WCIA will update this situation as more information becomes available.

Monticello students build bike racks for park named after fallen Marine
MONTICELLO, Ill. (WCIA) — Some high school students are honoring a fallen Marine by making some new bike racks for the park that bears his name. PFC Robert C. Burke Memorial Park in Monticello was named in honor of a local teen who enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and who was killed in action during the Vietnam War. At the age of 18, Burke was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during the firefight that resulted in his death. Movie filmed in Monticello brings Hollywood close to home The new bike racks are being made by students at Monticello High School, and they are themed around Burke. One rack features a metal sign bearing his name. Another rack's sign reads '327th Marines' — the regiment Burke served in. The teacher who led the project said this was one design he didn't want to miss. 'I love doing projects for the community,' Ryan Woodham said. 'My students really get involved and get excited about it because it's something they can take pride in. It's something they can drive around and show their parents and their friends that they were involved in it.' The bike racks are waiting to be painted. ‘We were definitely very relieved;' Mahomet mother wins court case to keep autistic son's trampoline and their home
MAHOMET, Ill (WCIA) — A mother in Mahomet is breathing a sigh of relief after she won a court case keeping her from being evicted from her home. Angela Palivos said that after more than two years of back and forth with threats of eviction, she is finally able to feel secure at her home in Candlewood Estates. According to her, it was over a trampoline and swing set in her yard. She said they've been there to help her son, Elijah Sisney, with his autism for years. 'He loves to swing with children that are autistic,' Palivos said. 'They like the repetition.' 'We knew he was fighting': Chatham community mourns fifth death in kids camp tragedy But new management took over the trailer park three years ago, and Palivos said they had a problem with both pieces of equipment. 'In April, May of 2023, they issued those new leases and the rules and regulations,' Palivos said. The new leases banned trampolines from people's yards, but Palivos said hers is necessary for her son's wellbeing. 'The trampoline, that's his favorite,' she said. 'He likes to lay on his back and just bounce and listen to his music. It's his happy place. It's safe for him.' Palivos said she had a doctor's note backing up her claims and sent it to management. But it was only met with violations from the leasing agency. In September of last year, the company filed for eviction. 'I told them, 'Look, I need these things in place,'' Palivos said. 'I'm willing to sign a waiver, to not hold this company responsible for any accidents that may happen.' Palivos said she even agreed to move both off her property if Candlewood Estates would move the abandoned trailer next to hers. She said they refused. UPDATE: Rantoul Police ID suspect in 8-year-old's stabbing The two parties went to court, and last week, the judge ruled in favor of Palivos. 'They broke Illinois's Human Rights Act, and they also broke the Americans with Disabilities Act by not requesting a reasonable accommodation,' Palivos said. 'We were definitely very relieved.' Worries like this have even made it to State Senator Chapin Rose. He said complaints have been sent to Springfield for more than a year. 'They have treated the residents horrifically,' Rose said. 'It's about damn time, frankly, that the State of Illinois stepped up as they have.' Palivos' lawyer said Candlewood Estates has 30 days to file an appeal. Management declined an interview with WCIA. ‘We knew he was fighting': Chatham community mourns fifth death in kids camp tragedy
CHATHAM, Ill. (WCIA) — A fifth child has died after a woman drove through the YNOT after school kids camp in Chatham. The Sangamon County Coroner said 8-year-old Bradley Lund died Monday morning after he'd been fighting for his life at the hospital following the April 28 accident. The crash also took the lives of 7-year-old Kathryn Corley, 7-year-old Alma Buhnerkempe, 8-year-old Ainsley Johnson and 18-year-old Rylee Britton. 'Hurting very, very badly': YNOT founder shares statement on Chatham tragedy A little more than a month after the tragedy, the community is still coming to terms with the losses. Red ribbons continue to wrap around trees and signs while the words 'Chatham Strong' remain plastered nearly everywhere in sight. Countless local businesses, organizations, schools and churches have hosted memorial events and fundraisers for the victims. Timothy Welch, Bank of Springfield vice president and branch manager, said a fund started by a family friend of the Lund's has been collecting money ever since the accident. 'It's something that's on people's minds all the time,' Welch said. 'Small or large, whatever [people] can do to support, it all comes together and creates something like we have now which is a huge fund.' Minutes down the road, Wheel Fast Bicycle Company helped plan a ride to raise money for Bradley's family. Investigation into fatal Chatham crash moves to Sangamon Co. State's Attorney's Office 'We knew he was fighting and battling,' owner Matthew Saner said. 'It's tragic what happened.' Both businesses said it's a privilege to help support a community that's been through so much. 'When something terrible happens, the way you measure a group of people is how they come together and support each other,' Welch said. 'I don't know if any place could have ever done a better job supporting each other than Chatham has.' Although the walls of the kids camp have since been patched up, the memory of the tragedy remains. Chatham Police have posted three other children who were hurt in the accident have gone home to their families. WCIA is unable to confirm if any children or adults still remain in the hospital recovering. Events are ongoing to support those impacted.
