'Needed To Hear Those Words...': De Paul Opens Up Messi's Advice Following Miami Switch
Inter Miami new recruit, Rodrigo De Paul, expressed his delight to be able to share the locker room with national side skipper Lionel Messi on the club level too, following his move to the MLS from La Liga side Atletico Madrid.
De Paul revealed that he had always enjoyed playing alongside the eight time Ballon d'Or winner in national colours, and added that playing for the same club would permit the duo, who played a crucial role in Albiceleste's third World Cup title, to spend more time together.
'Every time we would meet in the national team, the day-to-day was amazing, but at the end of the day, it ended up being quite short," De Paul reflected.
'I also wanted to feel that sensation of playing alongside the best," he added.
The Herons secured the 31-year-old on loan before the deal becomes permanent in 2026, with the transfer reportedly around £15 million.
De Paul started his career at Racing Club before moving to Valencia in 2014. The midfielder joined Udinese in 2016, then moved back to La Liga with Atletico Madrid in 2021.
De Paul had a couple of offers from European outfits ahead of his move to American shores, but the Argentine opted to play alongside Messi and expressed his interest in learning about the new territory he picked out.
De Paul, widely recognised for his role as a defensive midfielder, joins the support team Miami has built around their superstar Messi. He follows in the footsteps of Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba, joining the legendary player from Rosario in the United States after Messi's move last year.
'He told me, 'I know what you can give me on the field. I know who you are,'" De Paul revealed what his compatriot told him following his move to the Florida-based club.
''I'm only going to evaluate what you do on the field. As long as you play and you're feeling well, I know the class of player that you are.' I needed to hear those words," he averred.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Saquon Barkley has declined an invitation to join President Donald Trump's council on sports, fitness, and nutrition, which is being revitalized under an executive order that also reestablishes the Presidential Fitness Test for American children. Barkley said Monday following Eagles' practice that he had actually declined the invitation. 'A couple months ago, it was brought to my team about the council," Barkley said. "So I'm not really too familiar with it. I felt like that I am going to be super busy. Me and my family thought it would probably be of best interest to not accept that. I was definitely a little shocked when my name was mentioned. I'm assuming it's something great, so I appreciate it but was a little shocked when my name was mentioned.' Trump last week reestablished the Presidential Fitness Test for American children, a fixture of public schools for decades that gauged young people's health and athleticism with 1-mile runs, sit-ups and stretching exercises. 'This is a wonderful tradition, and we're bringing it back,' Trump said of the fitness test that began in 1966 but was phased out during the Obama administration. The executive order also reinvigorated the national sports council that could have included Barkley. Barkley won AP Offensive Player of the Year last season after rushing for 2,005 yards, eighth-best in NFL history, in his first season with the Eagles. Barkley has golfed with Trump and former President Barack Obama over the last year and the running back attended the White House celebration of the champion Eagles while some teammates — notably star quarterback Jalen Hurts — skipped the ceremony. Barkley visited Trump in April at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey, and caught a ride with the president to Washington on Air Force One and then to the White House on Marine One. 'He loved it,' Trump said then of Barkley's short flight on the presidential airplane. 'He's a great young guy and an incredible football player. Saquon had a season for the ages, running behind the most powerful offensive line in the NFL." Barkley, meanwhile, pushed back on social media criticism following the visit. 'I was five when I started chess and of course like any other five-year-old, it was really boring for me, I did not understand it and I used to sleep in my classes. But I think the way it taught me about life, failures, successes, how to handle myself and nerves, I think sport is something that every child should do just for human development. He was my first coach, so he has been the guiding force for me and my parents. He has led us to understand how the chess world works. New Delhi [India], August 4 (ANI): India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav had his first batting session at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru late last week in July after undergoing a successful hernia surgery earlier this year, according to ESPNcricinfo. In June, Suryakumar shared an update on Instagram about his successful sports hernia surgery in Munich, Germany. According to ESPNcricinfo, the dynamic batter is currently under the supervision of the BCCI's medical staff as he recovers from the surgery. Suryakumar's workload is expected to be significantly increased over the next few weeks, and it is believed that he is on track for the next month's Asia Cup, which is scheduled to kick off on September 9. According to ESPNcricinfo, the Indian team is expected to travel to the UAE in the first week of September. The tournament will mark the beginning of India's preparations for defending their crown in the T20 World Cup next year. India will host the tournament with Sri Lanka. Suryakumar was handed the reins of India's T20I team after their triumphant World Cup campaign in June 2024, after Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from the format.
