Swinney urges Starmer to engage with Scotland over Gaza evacuations

STV News3 days ago
The Prime Minister has been urged to engage with Scotland on evacuating injured children from Gaza who would otherwise be 'left to die'.
First Minister John Swinney wrote to Sir Keir Starmer earlier this month, saying Scotland 'stands ready' to receive some of the 2,000 children from Gaza injured as a result of the Israeli bombardment of the territory, to be treated in the NHS.
But Swinney claims to have received no response from the Prime Minister.
In a statement to the PA news agency, Swinney said: 'It is deeply saddening that so far the UK Government has refused to even enter into a dialogue about medical evacuations for children in Gaza who, without proper medical attention, will be left to die.
'That is the frank reality of life in Gaza under Israeli bombardment and blockade.
'The healthcare system in Gaza is on the brink of total collapse, with surgeons working day and night under artillery fire, with inadequate supplies and often no electricity.
'We know that many hospitals have been targeted and decimated by the IDF (Israel Defence Forces).'
The First Minister added that Scotland is prepared 'to do what is required to save the lives of as many of these kids as we can'. PA Media
His initial call came after a meeting with children's charity Unicef, prompting him to declare a 'race against time' to help children in need of urgent medical care.
'But we can't do so without the support of the Labour Government to get the children through the UK visa system and into Scotland,' he said.
'The suffering, torment and killing of the people of Gaza has gone on for far too long.
'I urge the Prime Minister to urgently engage with the Scottish Government on this issue so we can save as many young lives as we can.'
A spokeswoman for the UK Government said: 'Since the start of the conflict, UK support has provided essential healthcare to over 430,000 people in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.
'We have helped several children with complex paediatric conditions access privately funded medical care in the UK, supporting an initiative by Project Pure Hope.
'We have been clear the situation in Gaza is intolerable and that there must be an immediate ceasefire.
'We urge Israel to let vital humanitarian aid in and allow Gazans to receive urgent healthcare, including allowing the sick and wounded to temporarily leave the Gaza Strip to receive treatment.'

Humza Yousaf says Israel is starving wife's family in Gaza

Former first minister of Scotland Humza Yousaf has said Israel is starving his wife's family in Gaza. In a video the couple shared on Instagram, they said Nadia El-Nakla's cousin, her husband and their children are being 'starved' while food and aid are 'mere kilometres away'. 'My cousin Sally and her four children are starving,' El-Nakla, an SNP councillor in Dundee, said. 'My aunt Hanan, her children and grandchildren, including a seven-month-old baby, are being starved.' 'Yesterday my family's town Deir al-Balah was hit hard and starving people were being forced to run while being shot and bombed.' Getty Images The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) has begun a ground operation targeting Deir al-Balah, the main hub for humanitarian efforts in Gaza. On Monday, the UK and 24 other nations including France, Canada and Australia urged Israel to lift restrictions on the flow of aid into Gaza. They condemned the current aid delivery model, backed by the Israeli and American governments, which has reportedly resulted in IDF troops firing on Palestinian civilians in search of food on multiple occasions. 'This is a deliberate starvation of the Palestinian people,' El-Nakla said. 'Food and water are a mere kilometres away. This form of warfare is sickening, and the stories and images from my family and millions of others in Gaza are absolutely gut-wrenching.' Yousaf said: 'Governments might stay silent, they may refuse to act, but we won't.' The former first minister appeared beside his wife in the video and said Sally and her family are 'one of millions' starving in Gaza. 'Her husband goes out all day searching for food, often coming home with nothing. When I say home, I mean a tent in almost 40-degree heat,' Yousaf said. In Gaza, Yousaf said doctors are becoming 'too weak to treat patients', and journalists 'too weak' to report their starvation. 'For the sake of humanity, find your conscience and open the borders, and do it now.' More than 100 aid agencies have warned that 'mass starvation' is spreading across Gaza as Israel is accused of not allowing enough food, and other supplies, into the area. Desperation is mounting in the Palestinian territory of more than two million, which experts say is at risk of famine because of Israel's blockade and nearly two-year offensive. Israel said on Tuesday that 950 lorries worth of aid were waiting in Gaza for international organisations to distribute. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has accused Hamas, the proscribed terrorist group which controls Gaza, of stealing the food for itself. Dr Reddy's initially plans to launch the generic version of semaglutide - the active ingredient of Novo's Wegovy and diabetes medicine Ozempic - in Canada, India, Brazil, Turkey and other emerging markets, subject to patent expiry, Israeli said. "U.S. and Europe will open later... (and) all the other Western markets will be open between 2029 to 2033," Israeli said a press conference to discuss the company's earnings. He expects the generic drug to generate 'hundreds of millions of dollars' in sales for the company. Dr Reddy's also aims to launch 26 GLP-1 drugs within the next decade, Israeli said.

Humza Yousaf: Israel is starving my wife's family

Humza Yousaf and his wife Nadia El-Nakla said her cousin Sally, her four children and husband were being deliberately and forcefully starved by the Israeli government. Ms El-Nakla, an SNP councillor in Dundee, said her aunt Hanan, her children and grandchildren, including a seven-month-old baby, were also being starved. She said the town of Deir Al Balah, where her family live, was 'hit hard' by the Israeli Defence Force (IDF). 'Starving people were being forced to run while being shot and bombed,' she said in a video alongside her husband on social media. Nadia's cousin Sally, and her four children are being starved by Israel. Millions in Gaza are being deliberately starved while Israel withholds food mere kilometres away. Words are not enough. Governments must act and force Israel to open the borders and allow aid to flow in. — Humza Yousaf (@HumzaYousaf) July 23, 2025 Mr Yousaf said children in Gaza were being 'starved, displaced, bombed, all while the world watches'. The former SNP leader said: 'Sally is one of millions in Gaza. 'Her husband goes out all day searching for food, often to come home with nothing. 'And when I say home, I mean a tent and almost 40 degree heat.' He said that doctors in Gaza were becoming 'too weak to treat patients' while journalists were becoming 'too weak to report the silent killer of starvation'. 'This is a deliberate starvation of the Palestinian people,' Ms El-Nakla added. 'Food and water are a mere kilometres away. 'This form of warfare is sickening and the stories and images from my family and millions of others in Gaza are absolutely gut-wrenching. 'Can you imagine not being able to feed your children yet knowing the food you so desperately need is only a few miles away?' Humza Yousaf said the world was watching as Gaza is being 'starved' (Andrew Milligan/PA) She went on: 'Sally's life matters, Palestinian lives matter, and I am begging those who have the power to open the borders to do so now and let the people of Gaza live.' Mr Yousaf urged world leaders to take action to force Israel to allow more aid into Gaza. He said: 'Fathers like me, parents like us, children like ours, being starved, displaced, bombed, all while the world watches. 'Governments might stay silent, they may refuse to act, but we won't.' Writing on X, he added: 'Words are not enough. Governments must act and force Israel to open the borders and allow aid to flow in.' More than 100 aid agencies have warned that 'mass starvation' is spreading across Gaza as Israel is accused of not allowing enough food, and other supplies, into the area. The health ministry said 10 people have died from malnutrition in the last 24 hours. The UK was among 28 nations that accused Israel of the 'drip feeding of aid and the inhumane killing of civilians' seeking food and water. The Palestinian health ministry said earlier this week that 100 Palestinians had been killed by the IDF while waiting for food over the weekend. The UK Government is facing calls to pressure Israel into allowing more aid into Gaza (Jeff Moore/PA) Israel said on Tuesday that 950 lorries worth of aid were waiting in Gaza for international organisations to distribute. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has accused Hamas, the proscribed terrorist group which controls Gaza, of stealing the food for itself. Mr Yousaf previously described the situation in Gaza as 'hell on Earth'. Ms El-Nakla's parents, Maged and Elizabeth El-Nakla, had been trapped in the enclave for four weeks after visiting family when the war broke out after Hamas' October 7 attack on Israel. They later left through Egypt with other British nationals, although Mr Yousaf said his father-in-law had become a 'shell of a man' following their 'traumatic' month in Gaza. The UK Government and the Israeli embassy in London have been approached for comment.
