India's Forests Are Greener—but Storing Less Carbon: New Study Reveals a Sequestration Crisis
Through photosynthesis, trees and plants absorb carbon dioxide and turn it into energy needed for growing trunks and roots. This process of removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and storing it as biomass is called carbon sequestration. It is this ability of trees and plants that can help mitigate the impacts of climate change.
The Indian government, much like many other governments and private companies around the world, is banking on forests and plantations to tackle climate change.
As part of climate commitments under the Paris Agreement, the Indian government has pledged to create an additional carbon sink of 2.5 to 3 billion tonnes of CO2 (carbon dioxide) through additional forest and tree cover by 2030. There are ongoing efforts by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, such as the National Afforestation Programme (NAP) and the Green India Mission (GIM), aimed at afforestation and plantation activities. GIM is one of eight 'National Missions' under the National Action Plan on Climate Change.

Over the past few years, India has experienced significant greening, driven by irrigated agriculture and plantations. But to be an effective climate mitigation tool, the greening should translate to effective carbon sequestration. A new scientific study says this is not happening.
Published in the journal Resources, Conservation & Recycling last month by two scientists from IIT-Kharagpur, the study shows that in the last decade (2010-2019), carbon stock capacity declined by 5 per cent compared to the decade before (2000-2009). In some regions like the eastern Himalaya and the Western Ghats, the decline in forest carbon stock is as high as 17-20 per cent.
'Green-ness is on the outside. It is structural. And carbon uptake is a functional quality,' said Rahul Kashyap, the lead author of the study and Prime Minister's Research Fellow (PMRF) at CORAL, IIT Kharagpur. 'For Indian forests, the outer green-ness is increasing, but functional health, of which a key aspect is the ability to act as carbon sinks, is declining,' he added.
The study notes how greening is translating to biomass production at lower rates than before. And the reason is reduced soil moisture due to climate change-driven warming and activities like deforestation and plantations. And this trend is set to continue till 2100.
Jayanarayanan Kuttippurath, the other author of the study and an Assistant Professor at IIT Kharagpur, said, 'The atmosphere is continuously warming. The mitigation action the world is taking [to reduce the usage of fossil fuels] is not enough. And we are continuously emitting carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. On top of this, we have forest fires and deforestation. This is why the translation from green-ness to biomass is also decreasing.'
Plants under stress
Temperatures are rising and soil moisture is decreasing, causing heat stress in plants, which are unable to produce biomass and sequester carbon dioxide at rates they used to earlier. 'There are forest-dwellers and their livelihood. We have a big forest economy, and this will also be compromised. In addition to this, we have a net-zero target by 2070. The declining carbon stock capacity is a big concern,' Kuttippurath said.
The study is first-of-its-kind to estimate Ecosystem Photosynthetic Efficiency (EPE), which is a measure of translation of greenness to carbon uptake, across Indian forests. It finds that the largest declines in EPE are in the Eastern Himalaya, the Western Ghats, and the Indo-Gangetic Plain, which, interestingly, have the highest EPE in the country.
'We are losing quality forests'
Over the last two decades, reports by the Forest Survey of India have shown how green cover and forest cover in India are increasing. But this includes lots of areas outside historical forests, such as plantations and agroforestry.
'Day by day, we are losing quality forests. We have different kinds of forests with different species and different kinds of disturbances like infrastructure development and invasive species. And climate change exacerbates the impacts of disturbances,' said Purabi Saikia, Associate Professor at the Department of Botany in Banaras Hindu University. As an ecologist, Saikia has conducted ground studies of forests across the country in States like Arunachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Tamil Nadu.
'Invasive species like lantana and parthenium are also part of the green cover, but they have low carbon sequestration compared to native trees,' Saikia explained. 'So, yes. We have increasing green cover but not in terms of forest productivity or ecosystem productivity,' she added.
However, since the study is based purely on remote-sensing and predictions, Saikia called for more analysis based on ground-truthing. 'It is an important finding and the paper presents a good idea to carry forward with ground work in forests,' she added.

In the paper, too, the authors note that India needs more studies on forest carbon dynamics that integrate remote sensing observations and ground-based measurements.
Declining forest sink capacity is a global issue, too. A study published last month showed that forest sink capacity in Europe, too, is 'rapidly declining'. And yet another study from July showed that tropical forests the world over are losing drought resilience.
On the issue of declining forest carbon stock in India, the authors warn that it is 'imperative' not to misconstrue forest-based mitigation as a solution to climate change and that forest protection and afforestation measures should be done more scientifically to secure historical natural forests.

Indian scientists develop new approach for treatment of liver cirrhosis
New Delhi: A team of Indian scientists has found a new way to treat liver cirrhosis, by targeting the lymphatic vessels in the liver and intestine that fail in case of cirrhosis. Chronic liver disease can progress from mild disease to fibrosis to cirrhosis (also known as scarring). Cirrhosis is accompanied by the distortion of both blood and lymphatic vessels in the liver and the intestine. Patients with advanced cirrhosis often develop complications like fluid accumulation in the abdomen. A team of scientists from the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS), New Delhi, and National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Guwahati, focussed on improving the drainage capacity of lymphatic vessels in the liver and intestine by using nanocarriers filled with a powerful protein called VEGF-C. 'Vascular endothelial growth factor-C (VEGF-C) is a key pro-lymphangiogenic factor that activates lymphangiogenesis or new lymphatic vessel growth. It does this through binding to a cell membrane tyrosine kinase receptor, vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-3 (VEGFR-3), the activation of which is essential for the growth and development of new lymphatic vessels,' said the researchers. The team probed the therapeutic efficacy of VEGF-C in ameliorating gut lymphatic dysfunction and improving lymph drainage. Owing to the hydrophilicity, short half-life, and systemic side effects of VEGF-C, the team led by Dr Subham Banerjee from NIPER Guwahati first focused on the development of VEGF-C encapsulated reverse micelle-based nanocarriers, which specifically bind to VEGFR-3 homodimers. Next, the ILBS team, led by Dr Savneet Kaur, tested the developed VEGF-C nanocarriers extensively in animal models of advanced cirrhosis and portal hypertension. The developed molecule was delivered via the oral route to ensure its gut lymphatic vessel uptake in the animal models. The team showed that VEGF-C nanocarriers significantly increased mesenteric lymph drainage, which reduced ascites. Importantly, the treatment also led to an attenuation of the portal pressures, improved cytotoxic T-cell immunity in mesenteric lymph nodes, and reduced local and systemic bacterial load. The research, published in the JHEP Reports journal, is the first to highlight that therapeutic lymphangiogenesis with VEGF-C is a promising treatment for reconstructing the fragmented lymphatic network and restoring lymphatic function and drainage in advanced cirrhosis.

'It will build on the 2025 AI Action Summit in Paris co-chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Earthquakes' secondary waves are the most destructive. India is developing a system to predict them
India is developing an ambitious early-warning system for destructive secondary waves (S-waves) during earthquakes, which could provide critical lead time to save lives and protect infrastructure. The plan is to deploy this advanced detection network, a first for the country, over the next decade, M. Ravichandran, secretary of ministry of earth sciences, told Mint. Although accurately predicting the exact time, location and magnitude of earthquakes remains a scientific challenge, the ministry is investing in infrastructure to improve early-warning systems. 'There is currently no scientific method to predict earthquakes in advance. However, we can monitor seismic activity in real time to quickly determine where and why an earthquake has occurred," said Ravichandran. He explained that when an earthquake strikes, the primary wave (p-wave), hits first, followed by the more destructive S-wave. There is typically a brief time gap between these waves. 'Our objective is to detect the occurrence of the p-wave and use that short window to anticipate the arrival of the damaging S-wave." He said Japan is already capable of predicting S-waves a few seconds before. 'The technology is known science, but there should be infrastructure in place to make the system operational," he added. The ministry is setting up infrastructure for the system. For example, it needs to install accelerometers, which measure ground motion during an earthquake, and GPS devices at many locations. 'If everything is in place, I can say maybe in a decade's time, we can go for an early-earthquake warning," he added. India's earthquake vulnerability India is highly vulnerable to earthquakes due to its unique geological and tectonic setting, particularly its location at the collision boundary of the Indian and Eurasian plates. This constant tectonic activity makes several parts of the country susceptible to moderate to severe earthquakes. The government has identified that 59% of India is vulnerable to earthquakes, and the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has classified the country into four seismic zones based on earthquake risk. Zone V, including regions like the Himalayas, is the most active, while Zone II is the least affected. Over the years, India has experienced several devastating earthquakes. The 1905 Kangra and 2001 Bhuj earthquakes are among the most catastrophic in India's history. The 8.0-magnitude Kangra earthquake claimed 19,800 lives. The 7.9-level Bhuj earthquake followed, leading to 12,932 deaths and devastating 890 villages. More recently, on 17 February 2025, a 4.0-magnitude earthquake struck Delhi. India recorded 159 earthquakes from November 2024 to February 2025, raising concerns about the country's future preparedness. On 22 July, a magnitude 3.2 tremor with its epicentre in Faridabad, Haryana, was felt in parts of Delhi, but no damage or injuries were reported. 'Early-warning systems (EWS), powered by real-time data, resilient building codes and standards, adaptive engineering principles, and AI (artificial intelligence), play a vital role in safeguarding infrastructure and communities," said Amit Prothi, director general of the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI). 'They enhance seismic resilience by better equipping assets to withstand shocks, accelerate recovery, and protect lives and livelihoods." CDRI, a New Delhi-based multilateral organization, was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the 2019 United Nations (UN) Climate Action Summit. Prothi added that this is why the UN secretary-general António Guterres's 'Early Warning for All' call is important. On World Meteorological Day, 23 March 2022, Guterres announced that the UN would spearhead new action 'to ensure every person on Earth is protected by early-warning systems within five years". 'Today, one third of the world's people, mainly in least developed countries and small island developing states, are still not covered by early-warning systems. This is unacceptable, particularly with climate impacts sure to get even worse. Early warnings and action save lives," Guterres said. Once India's system is in place, critical damage to public and private infrastructure can be avoided, said Ravichandran. For example, if a bullet train is going from one place to another, timely information can alert the system, which will stop the bullet train and cut off the transmission line, he said.
