WI vs PAK: Pakistan faces fifth bowler dilemma before series-decider against West Indies

The Hindu5 days ago
Pakistan captain Mohammad Rizwan acknowledged a dilemma over the fifth bowler, saying that they would take a late decision on the team combination for Tuesday's series-decider against West Indies on August 12.
Pakistan, which won the opening One-Day International by five wickets, posted 171 for seven in 37 overs in a rain-truncated match, but West Indies prevailed by five wickets to draw level in the three-match series.
Pakistan's part-time duo of Saim Ayub and Salman Agha conceded a combined 66 runs in seven wicketless overs as West Indies cruised home.
'You could say our fifth bowler gave away too many runs, but in recent years, Salman Agha and Saim Ayub have both bowled well for us,' Rizwan said after the match.
'Saim didn't have the best day today, but he performed well in the T20Is. That's just part of the game.'

Rizwan said they could not read the conditions, and several rain delays did not help their cause.
'Honestly, the weather forecast has been completely different from expectations, and it's hard to read. We're keeping our options open and will finalise the XI after assessing the conditions.'
Pakistan had won the preceding Twenty20 series 2-1.

Jacob Bethell to make history as youngest England Mens captain in Ireland T20 Series

London [UK], August 15 (ANI): All-rounder Jacob Bethell has been named to captain England Men for the first time for the IT20 series against Ireland. The 21-year-old is set to become the youngest-ever England Men's captain in an international match when he leads the team in Dublin. England Men have named the squads for the upcoming white-ball series against South Africa and the IT20 internationals away to Ireland, according to the England and Wales Cricket Board website. England will contest three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and three IT20s against South Africa. The ODI series begins on Tuesday, 2 September at Headingley. The three-match IT20 series against Ireland will be staged at Malahide in Dublin with the opening game on Wednesday, 17 September. Hampshire quick Sonny Baker has been called up to his first England Men squad after impressing in the winter with the England Lions and during the Vitality Blast and The Hundred. The all-format Test players, aside from Bethell, have been rested for the IT20 series away to Ireland. Marcus Trescothick will also step in as Head Coach for that series. England Men Selector, Luke Wright, said, "Jacob Bethell has impressed with his leadership qualities ever since he has been with the England squads, and the series against Ireland will provide him with the opportunity to further develop those skills on the international stage." "Sonny is a player we have identified for a while, and he was impressive during the England Lions tours last winter. He has carried that form into this season in white-ball cricket with Hampshire and Manchester Originals and deservedly gets his opportunity." England ODI squad to face South Africa: Harry Brook (capt), Rehan Ahmed, Jofra Archer, Sonny Baker, Tom Banton, Jacob Bethell, Jos Buttler, Brydon Carse, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Saqib Mahmood, Jamie Overton, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Jamie Smith. Jacob Bethell To Become England's Youngest Captain Against Ireland

Jacob Bethell is set to become England's youngest international men's cricket captain after the 21-year-old was named Friday as skipper for next month's T20 international series in Ireland. The talented Warwickshire all-rounder is regarded as one of the rising stars of the English game, even though he has still to score his first professional century in any format. Bethell, however, has still been appointed to lead England in a three-match T20 series against Ireland in Dublin, which will serve as part of the team's preparations for next year's T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. Should all go according to plan, he will become England's youngest men's captain in an international match, breaking the record of Monty Bowden, who was 23 years and 144 days old when he led England in a Test against South Africa at Cape Town in 1888/89. Bethell has featured in just four Test matches but has become a white-ball regular with 13 Twenty20 appearances and 12 one-day internationals to his credit since making his T20 bow in September last year. "Jacob Bethell has impressed with his leadership qualities ever since he has been with the England squads and the series against Ireland will provide him with the opportunity to further develop those skills on the international stage," said England selector Luke Wright. Bethell's most recent international appearance was in the fifth and deciding Test against India at the Oval earlier this month where, having replaced injured red-ball captain Ben Stokes, he managed scores of just six and five, while not taking a wicket with his left-arm spin. England lost a thrilling match by just six runs as India ended a gripping five-Test series all square at 2-2. But former England captain Michael Vaughan said team management had made a "diabolical" decision to call-up Bethell for such a key match on the back of so little first-class cricket this season. "Jacob Bethell, this summer has faced 67 balls in red-ball cricket, he scored 32 runs," said Vaughan on the Stick to Cricket podcast. He added: "Surely, if you are trying to develop a young cricketer, you've got to give him time to go there and play cricket. So if it does come that he has to play, at least he has had a bit of game time.
