Oman opens first copper waste recycling plant
Oman has inaugurated its first industrial plant dedicated to converting legacy copper mining waste into high-purity copper using renewable energy and eco-friendly technologies — a major step toward green industrialisation and sustainable resource management in line with Oman Vision 2040 goals. Located in the Wilayat of Suhar, the plant was officially opened on Monday under the auspices of Qais bin Mohammed al Yousef, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion. The launch was attended by ministers, senior officials and business leaders from across Oman's public and private sectors. Developed by Green Tech Mining and Services, the project is the first of its kind in the country. It was made possible through a strategic partnership between Oman Mining Company and Austria-based BPG Group, with support from the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion. Total investment exceeds RO 41 million. The initiative aims to turn environmental liabilities into economic value by reprocessing waste from historical copper mining operations. The first production phase is scheduled to begin in June 2025 with an output capacity of 60 tonnes of copper cathodes per year. By December 2026, capacity is expected to scale to 12,000 tonnes annually — significantly enhancing Oman's footprint in the regional green mining sector. Dr Saleh bin Said Masan, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion for Commerce and Industry, described the project as a 'qualitative leap' in Oman's industrial trajectory. 'This plant integrates environmental sustainability with economic diversification and industrial localisation. It reflects our commitment to innovation-led development and cleaner industrial practices.' The project also supports the Oman Industrial Strategy 2040 by boosting value-added production, attracting high-tech investments and localising industries that harness the country's natural resources. Copper cathodes produced at the facility will be classified as sustainably recycled metal — a key asset in global decarbonisation supply chains. Khalid bin Salim al Qasabi, Director-General of Industry at the ministry, said the plant represents a practical embodiment of the ministry's push to enable advanced industrial projects. 'We worked to ensure streamlined procedures and robust technical standards to bring this facility online. It's a model of regulatory coordination and sustainable investment.' Ernst Grissemann, CEO of BPG Group, highlighted the long-term vision behind the project, which began in 2018. 'The use of renewable energy and the plant's zero-waste approach underlines our dedication to the responsible industry. This facility positions Oman as a regional hub for green transformation in the mining sector.' As Oman seeks to elevate its industrial competitiveness, reduce environmental impact, and create new value chains from existing resources, this project offers a blueprint for scalable, environmentally responsible industrial growth — reinforcing the Sultanate's position in the global transition to sustainable development.

OETC completes fault current limiter project
MUSCAT: Oman Electricity Transmission Company (OETC) announced the successful completion of all construction and commissioning works for the Fault Current Limiter (FCLR) project on the 132kV transmission network in Muscat. The project has a total investment value exceeding RO 4 million. The Fault Current Limiters (FCLs) are installed to limit fault current to a safe level without interrupting the circuit, thereby protecting transformers, circuit breakers, cables, and other infrastructure from excessive thermal and mechanical stress. They also help avoid costly equipment upgrades when fault levels exceed design ratings due to system growth or new network interconnections, and ensure the overall stability, safety, and reliability of the electricity network while maintaining uninterrupted power supply to other parts of the grid. This project is part of OETC's ongoing efforts to enhance the sustainability and resilience of the national transmission network, in line with the company's strategic objectives to improve efficiency, reduce system failures, and ensure swift emergency response using modern smart technologies and global best practices. Commenting on the achievement, Eng Masoud bin Salam al Riyami, Chief Operations Officer at OETC, stated: "This project marks a significant milestone in improving operational efficiency and the quality of power supply. It reflects our commitment to investing in smart infrastructure that ensures optimal grid performance and meets national energy development goals." He further highlighted the company's strategic five-year plans to assess network conditions and implement both current and future projects aimed at building a world-class smart grid capable of adapting to growing demand and sectoral transformation. "OETC is fully committed to continuous development, cost-effective investments, and adopting high-standard systems to maintain a reliable and sustainable power transmission network. The FCLR system is a key step in that journey," Al Riyami added. OETC, a member of Nama Group, is the only company responsible for the transmission and control of electricity across the Sultanate of Oman's network. The electricity is transmitted from production stations to distributed load centers in the governorates. The transmission network operates at a voltage of 132kV and above to cover All of the governorates in the Sultanate of Oman. Furthermore, OETC manages the interconnections between Oman and the GCC interconnection network, which operates at a voltage of 220kV.

Al Buraimi Industrial City investment surpasses RO 274 million
MUSCAT: Al Buraimi Industrial City, operated by the Public Establishment for Industrial Estates (Madayn), has recorded strong growth in 2024, with cumulative investments now exceeding RO 274 million. According to Saeed bin Abdullah al Balushi, Director General of Al Buraimi Industrial City, the city signed 16 investment contracts this year alone, totalling around RO 7.97 million. These contracts cover over 165,000 square metres and span various sectors, including motor oil production, paper and cardboard manufacturing, food and water processing, and cosmetics. Al Balushi attributed this performance to Madayn's continued efforts to build a competitive, business-friendly environment that supports job creation, empowers small and medium enterprises, and promotes sustainable industrial development in line with Oman Vision 2040. He also noted the strategic importance of the ongoing Mahdha–Buraimi Road Dualisation Project, being implemented in coordination with Madayn. This major infrastructure upgrade will connect both phases of the industrial city and facilitate smoother traffic flow, easing movement for investors and improving access to key sites. Saeed bin Abdullah al Balushi, Director General of Al Buraimi Industrial City. In a move to bridge academia and industry, Al Buraimi Industrial City recently signed a cooperation agreement with Al Buraimi University College. The agreement aims to promote knowledge exchange, organise scientific and cultural events, provide student training, and support research and innovation across industrial and academic domains. Covering a total area of over 14.4 million square metres—of which more than 4.2 million have been developed—Al Buraimi Industrial City spans two distinct phases and is strategically located along the Sultanate of Oman's border with the United Arab Emirates. This proximity offers easy access to the UAE and broader GCC markets, along with logistical advantages via nearby highways and major Omani ports such as Sohar. The city hosts a diverse array of industries, including food production, manufacturing, logistics, warehousing, and the chemical and plastics sectors. — ONA
