Oman to host events on large scale in future
Muscat: In the coming years, one can expect the Sultanate of Oman to host events on a large scale, similar to what is seen in other countries, said a senior official of the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism.
Speaking to the Observer, Khalid al Zadjali, director of Oman Convention Bureau, said, "There is no specific timeline, but we certainly have such plans and are working on meetings and conferences that can bring thousands of people to the country. We have nice airports, hotels and road infrastructure, among other things."
Speaking about the Arabian Travel Market, he said it is one of the top three events worldwide and provides an important platform and opportunities to meet our counterparts from various source markets. We are also focusing on promoting Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) in the Sultanate of Oman. We see growth in the MICE market and are working with hoteliers, agents and those who come for these events."
There has been a growth of around 7 to 8 per cent in the MICE market. "We also support and promote Salalah as a second destination after Muscat. Salalah is the only city in the Gulf area that can be visited year-round," he said. Some events were conducted last year in September, which could also be held in October.
Regarding offering connectivity to visitors, he said Oman Air has been covering major cities such as India, one of the strong source markets, as well as flying to the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Russia and now Amsterdam." Al Jabal Al Akhdhar has iconic selling points for the MICE market and there are some packages available as incentives. It is a unique destination and different from beach properties. Oman is also targeting more than 140 countries that participate in these events.

MUSCAT, JUNE 7 Spanish-based tourism and hospitality industry consulting firm THR Strategic Tourism Advisors has announced that it has been appointed by Oman's Ministry of Heritage and Tourism to master plan the development of Jabal Al Abyadh (The White Mountain) into a sustainable tourism attraction. Located in the Wilayat of Al Hamra in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate, Jabal Al Abyadh is the second highest peak in Oman, reaching an elevation of around 3,000 metres. Unlike other well-known mountain destinations in the governorate, notably Al Jabal Al Akhdhar and Jabal Shams, which are connected by modern access to the summit of the White Mountain is only via graded tracks that are off-limits to only but the most skilled motorists. But with Jabal Al Abyadh enjoying almost the same favourable natural and weather-related characteristics as Al Jabal Al Akhdhar and Jabal Shams – cooler climes, rugged landscapes, campsites and other features suited for adventure tourism – authorities have decided to open up this location to tourism development as well. 'We are excited to share that we've officially launched a project to develop a tourism master plan for Jabal Al Abyadh, also known as Oman's White Mountain,' said THR. The company added in a post that a team from THR, accompanied by representatives from the ministry and local experts, had recently made an initial site visit to 'explore this breathtaking destination, located less than a 2-hour drive from Muscat'. Commenting on the significance of the mountain destination, THR added: Al Abyadh holds remarkable potential for nature-based and cultural tourism, with its stunning wadis, rich archaeological sites, awe-inspiring caves, and above all the warm hospitality of its people. This visit was an essential step in understanding the area's assets and identifying opportunities for sustainable tourism development that honours both the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the region.' According to experts, the toponym 'White Mountain' is a reference to the presence of extensive limestone and ophiolite rock formations in Jabal Al Abyadh. Part of its appeal also stems from the presence of abandoned mountain villages and ancient Aflaj system, underscoring the mountain's historical value. Additionally, pastoral communities on the summit have preferred to live traditional lives as goat-herders while eschewing many of the creature comforts afforded by modern living. THR, which has undertaken over 1100 projects in around 70 countries, specialises in tourism and hospitality industry consulting, destination strategy, marketing and management, resorts and hotels, and tourism development plans.

Oman launches first tourist hot air balloon project in Türkiye
Muscat, June 3 The Sultanate of Oman launched its first tourist hot air balloon as part of the 'Oman Balloons' project in Cappadocia, the Republic of Türkiye, during the promotional phase of the project. This initiative is part of the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism's efforts to develop and diversify the tourism product while enhancing Oman's position as a unique regional and international destination. Salim bin Sultan al Abri, founder and CEO of Oman Balloons, announced that the hot air balloon will arrive in Oman by September, with operations starting in October at Stars Gate Camp in Bidiyah. 'Our objective is to make Oman an attractive hot air balloon destination. We plan to participate in all the tourism festivals conducted in different governorates of Oman. We would also like to have a school to train hot air balloon riders. We will also be the agents for the Pasha Balloons to be represented in other GCC countries,' he said. Al Abri emphasised Oman's heritage, unique features, nature and tranquillity, noting that hot air balloon adds entertainment and adventure to the tourism experience. The project aims to bring international expertise in hot air balloon tourism to Oman, enhancing tourism experiences for both domestic and international visitors. "Oman Balloon No 1" will begin flights from the Wilayat of Bidiyah in Al Sharqiyah North Governorate, offering passengers a unique opportunity to explore Oman's diverse tourism attractions from the sky. The hot air balloon has been approved by the Civil Aviation Authority in Oman and is designed to withstand Omani weather conditions, with a capacity for up to 20 passengers and a technical crew consisting of a pilot and an assistant. The "Oman Balloons" project is supported by the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism for its role in promoting experiential tourism and providing panoramic views of tourist sites. Hot air balloon rides in Bidiyah soon following trial in Turkey
By OUR CORRESPONDENT Muscat – An Omani firm has completed a hot air balloon trial in Cappadocia, Turkey ahead of plans to introduce rides in North Sharqiyah. The first commercial flights will take place in Bidiyah, offering views of the desert and surrounding terrain. Led by Oman Balloons in cooperation with Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, the project is part of efforts to diversify Oman's tourism offerings and enhance its appeal on regional and international tourism maps. Salim bin Sultan al Abri, founder of Oman Balloons, informed Muscat Daily that the company partnered with a Turkish manufacturer that makes certified hot air balloons. 'The balloon was successfully tested, and we used the initial operation to promote tourism in Oman,' he said. Certified by Civil Aviation Authority, the hot air balloon is designed for Omani weather conditions and can carry up to 20 passengers. It will be operated by a certified pilot and assistant.
