Jerry Butler obituary
Butler, who has died aged 85, had hits across three decades, with records that spanned the evolution of African-American popular music, from the gospel-influenced doo-wop of For Your Precious Love, aimed at the teenagers of the 1950s, through the suave balladry of Moon River and Make It Easy on Yourself in the 60s, to the sophisticated boudoir soul of I Want to Do It to You in the 70s.
There was a background to his unruffled demeanour. In his 2004 autobiography, titled Only the Strong Survive: Memoirs of a Soul Survivor, Butler gave credit to a teacher in the fifth grade at his elementary school in Chicago. Her name was Ernestine Curry and she taught 'maths, English, history, music, etiquette and how to box'.
She also told her class of 11-year-olds about such great figures from Black history as Nat Turner, who led a slave rebellion in Virginia in 1831, the world heavyweight champion boxer Jack Johnson and the jazz composer and bandleader Duke Ellington, while getting them to read the works of the historian WEB DuBois and the poet and novelist Countee Cullen. 'Mrs Curry gave us a sense of pride and dignity that has carried me and many other of her students through life,' Butler said.
In later life Butler went into politics. He took a master's degree in political science and became a commissioner for Cook County, whose county seat is Chicago, serving on the 17-member board from 1985 to 2018.
His place in the affection of soul fans was retained long after the end of his recording career. When Bruce Springsteen released a collection of cover versions of soul classics in 2022, he included two of Butler's best known songs: Only the Strong Survive, which gave the album its title, and Hey, Western Union Man,.
Butler was born in Sunflower County, Mississippi, where his parents picked cotton as sharecroppers. He was aged three when the family became part of the Great Migration, moving to Chicago. His father, Jerry Sr, worked two jobs to feed the family, for the city's sanitation and streets department and for the Illinois Central Railroad. His mother, Arvelia (nee Agnew), took her children – two girls and two boys – to worship and sing at the Church of God in Christ.
Every Sunday morning they listened to the three-hour sermons of the Rev Annie Bell Mayfield, whose grandson Curtis was a contemporary and became a friend. Butler was soon joining Annie Bell Mayfield's Travelling Souls Spiritualist gospel caravan, touring throughout the US in his school holidays as a member of a group called the Northern Jubilee Singers and experiencing at first hand the sounds of the great gospel groups of the time, including the Blind Boys of Alabama and the Soul Stirrers, with Sam Cooke.
Butler was 14 when his father died suddenly of a heart attack, forcing him to begin taking night jobs in factories to help the family's finances while attending Washburne Trade School, where he trained to become a chef.
It was seeing Nat King Cole in a Chicago nightclub that showed the teenaged Butler the kind of performer he aspired to be. In 1956 he stopped going to church and started singing with his first R&B group, a quartet called the Quails. After they split up, he and Mayfield got together to form a group that became the Impressions.
For their first single, released on a local label, Butler and two of the other members of the group, Richard and Arthur Brooks, wrote a ballad called For Your Precious Love. Its blend of doo-wop cadences, gospel harmonies and Butler's pleading vocal not only gave them a Top 20 hit but induced the audience at the Apollo in Harlem to call the young men back for three encores of the same song.
Two years later, having been persuaded by the record company to pursue a solo career, Butler achieved even greater success – No 1 in the R&B chart, No 7 in the pop chart – with the lovelorn He Will Break Your Heart, co-written with the record's producer, Calvin Carter, and Mayfield, who also sang the distinctive high harmony part on the chorus.
Mayfield and the Impressions would go on to greater things, but Butler's subsequent career burned on an intermittent flame. He was the first to record the Henry Mancini-Johnny Mercer song Moon River in 1961, but saw it become a bigger hit for Andy Williams. A year later his version of Make It Easy on Yourself, by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, was also the first to be released. In 1964 his swooning duet with Betty Everett on Gilbert Bécaud's Let It Be Me, with an English lyric by Manny Curtis, reached the top five.
In 1965 he and Otis Redding wrote I've Been Loving You Too Long (To Stop Now), a ballad that might have been the sequel to For Your Precious Love. It became one of Redding's early hits and was covered by many other artists, accruing royalties that Butler claimed outstripped all his other earnings put together.
In the late 60s he teamed up with Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, the gifted and ambitious Philadelphia-based songwriters and producers, for a string of heavily arranged hits that included Hey, Western Union Man, Only the Strong Survive and Moody Woman, and several albums, such as The Iceman Cometh and Ice on Ice, whose titles exploited the nickname bestowed upon him many years earlier.
He made frequent appearances as the host of oldies shows on television and served a term as the chairman of the Rhythm and Blues Foundation, a charity set up to provide belated support for black artists unfairly treated by the music business. In 1991 he and the four other original Impressions were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
His brother Billy, a singer and guitarist with whom Butler ran a workshop for young artists, died in 2015. His wife, Annette (nee Smith), whom he married in 1959 and who had been one of his backing singers, died in 2019. He is survived by their twin sons, Randall and Anthony, four grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.

It will be held at the Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California with NFL star Travis's team, Kansas City Chiefs, tipped to contest it. During the New Heights podcast, Taylor referred to the number 47 — and eagle-eyed fans noted that her 47th show during The Eras Tour was at the Levi's Stadium. Taylor thanked Travis and his brother, fellow American football star Jason Kelce, for 'screaming for 47 seconds' — and joked she performed in '47,000 countries' on her recent global concert tour. Fans also believe Taylor's choice to announce her new album on a podcast dedicated largely to American football is a further pointer to her performing at the big game. Elsewhere a glass microphone sits on a shelf near a figurine of Travis in his Kansas City Chiefs kit. But perhaps the most telling clue is that Taylor was rumoured to have turned down offers to perform at the Super Bowl in order to focus on re-recording her first six albums. But on May 30, she announced she had won the battle to obtain the master recordings of them in a deal with Shamrock Capital. In a letter on her website she wrote: 'All of the music I've ever made . . . now belongs . . . to me.' 'Intoxicating' thriller dubbed a 'true classic of the genre' streaming for free
The film remains a popular choice with fans An "intoxicating" thriller that has been dubbed a "masterpiece" and a "true classic" will be available to stream for free. The Silence of the Lambs was released in 1991 and despite its older release, remains a popular choice with fans. Starring two time Academy Award winners Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins, the film follows FBI student Clarice Starling who is assigned to help on the search of a serial killer. She soon seeks the help of Dr Hannibal Lecter *the cannibal* who is held in a maximum security hospital. Dr Hannibal Lecter is a character created by American author Thomas Harris and has featured in the 1986 film Manhunter, but his appearance in The Silence of the Lambs is arguably the most famous adaptation. Both Hopkins and Foster bagged Oscar awards for their performances, with Hopkins scooping the Best Leading Actor award and Foster clinching the Best Leading Actress accolade at the 1992 ceremony. It also nabbed the coveted Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay awards. And the film remains a hit with fans with many describing it as a "masterpiece" and a timeless classic". The popular choice will be available to stream on BBC Two on Sunday evening (August 17), as well as BBC iPlayer. It is currently available to buy on prime Video. A synopsis reads: "FBI trainee Clarice Starling, enticing insights from confined killer Hannibal Lecter, shares her nightmare memory in the hope of stopping a serial killer before his latest victim dies. Multi-award-winning thriller." With an impressive score of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, one person said: "A complete masterpiece throughout the ages." Another commented: "Definitely a classic. The film set new standards and is still very suspenseful and creepy even by today's standards." A third wrote: "One of the best movies of the 1990s if not all time. incredible story, amazing actors and a master class in film making." A fourth replied: "The Silence of the Lambs is an outstanding five-star thriller that completely pulled me in. Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster deliver unforgettable performances, making every scene intense and gripping. "The psychological tension, unsettling atmosphere, and smart storytelling kept me hooked from start to finish. It's a masterful film that left a lasting impression on me." Another praised: "Gritty, disgusting and suspenseful, it gets deep under your skin and makes you gag even after three decades. The undoubted highlight being Anthony Hopkins' performance." Writing for the Winnipeg Free Press, Paul McKie described it as: "The Silence of the Lambs is one of the most intoxicating and absorbing thrillers ever made." Directed by Jonathan Demme, the film also stars Scott Glen as well as Ted Levine and Anthony Heald. The Silence of the Lambs will be available to watch on BBC Two at 10pm on Sunday, August 17 before arriving on BBC iPlayer.

'I got kicked out of Parliament for my brutal takedown of Boris Johnson'
Dawn Butler has said there's no point in being an MP if it's not to 'speak truth to power' as she recounted being kicked out of Parliament for insulting Boris Johnson A Labour MP who was kicked out of Parliament for calling Boris Johnson a one-word insult has doubled down with a more brutal attack. Appearing on The Mirror 's new show Party Games, Dawn Butler said the former Tory PM was "gaslighting the whole country" looked back on being thrown out of the Commons in 2021. The moment came up as the Labour MP for Brent East played 'Never Have I Ever?' with The Mirror's Sophie Huskisson - and was asked 'Never Have I Ever been told off by the Speaker'. The Mirror's new YouTube show Party Games, which launched on Saturday, sees MPs play a series of games, which tease out funny stories, emotional moments and political jabs from MPs. You can watch the first episode with Ms Butler on YouTube by clicking here. 'I played Hug, Marry, Avoid with Labour MP Dawn Butler and couldn't stop laughing' Asked if she'd ever been told off by the Speaker in the House of Commons, Ms Butler responded: 'Well obviously I got thrown out of Parliament for calling Boris Johnson a liar.' Pressed why she called him that, she continued: 'Because he was a liar! He lied over and over and over again. 'I was just like, come on, he's gaslighting the whole country. And I'd had enough. I'm that kind of conviction politician, so what is the point in me being here if I'm not going to sort of speak truth to power? The doorkeepers came up to me and said, I had to leave Parliament - the whole estate - straight away, or do I need to be escorted off? And I was like, good job I had my keys on me.' The row happened in 2021 during a discussion in the Commons on the prospect of a public inquiry into the government's handling of the pandemic. Under the Commons rules, it is forbidden to call another MP a liar and considered unparliamentary language. But Ms Butler had had enough of Mr Johnson's behaviour during the pandemic and told the Commons: "Poor people in our country have paid with their lives because the Prime Minister has spent the last 18 months misleading this House and the country over and over again." She highlighted disputed claims made by the PM about the Covid vaccination programme, adding: "It's dangerous to lie in a pandemic. I am disappointed the Prime Minister has not come to the House to correct the record and correct the fact that he has lied to the House and the country over and over again." Ms Butler refused and said: "It's funny that we get in trouble in this place for calling out the lie rather than the person lying." After being asked to reflect on her words, she added: "I've reflected on my words and somebody needs to tell the truth in this House that the Prime Minister has lied." Here's a look at some of the other best moments from the episode Would you rather be London mayor or Prime Minister? 'London mayor. To represent London - and I'm a Londoner through, born in East London - just having London the way I have experienced it and see it, and just making London wonderful for everyone, and everyone being sort of proud of London and being a Londoner, yeah, I'd love to be Mayor of London.' Asked if she'd be running in the next mayoral election, she added: 'Once there's a vacancy, I will put my hat in the ring.' What was your greatest moment in politics? 'I was the first black female MP to ever stand at that despatch box as a government minister. And when I think back, I think, God, I made history. And a few weeks before, we were talking about the abolition of slavery, and I thought, God, they'd all be spinning in their graves knowing that there's a black woman at the dispatch box representing Her Majesty's Government. And so that's one of my proudest moments.' Watch the Mirror's YouTube show Party Games IT is not often you get to play games with elected Members of Parliament. But it is exactly what I am doing on The Mirror's show, Party Games, which was launched last night. In the programme on the Mirror's YouTube channel, I host familiar faces from across the political spectrum for a party like no other. Wearing an obligatory party hat, I spin a wheel of fortune to decide which games to play - with each one having its own special ability to tease out funny stories, emotional moments and, of course, some political points from MPs. They include 'Would You Rather?' where MPs have to make a painful choice out of two options, and 'Never Have I Ever?', There is also the 'Ask Me Anything' round and 'Hug, Marry, Avoid', where MPs have to choose who'd they'd hug, marry or avoid out of a given list of three people. The '30-Second Pitch' round is where the guest gets to talk for 30 seconds about an issue, cause or campaign they are passionate about. In an age where MPs face increasingly vicious intimidation, hate and violence, The Mirror's show hopes to allow viewers to get to know the humans behind the pomp of Westminster. You can watch Party Games on YouTube now. Would you rather stand out or follow the crowd? 'You have to stand out from the crowd, especially if you're a Black woman, what's the point? You're always going to stand out, right? And I remember somebody saying to me that if I want to be taken seriously as a politician, I need to tone down my dress. And that was it: I was like, illuminate! You're going to need sunglasses when I walk in a room.' What is an issue you are passionate about? 'My summer campaign 2025 is about cleaning up our high streets. At the moment, councils are not allowed to say no to betting shops and adult gaming centres. That's why we have so many in poorer areas. So what I want to do is make sure we change the law - the 2005 Gambling Act - so that councils can have more of a say, so that people can have more of a say, because our high streets deserve to be better, we deserve high streets that are full of beautiful complexity and not so many betting shops.'
