Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka are the defending champions as the US Open returns in New York.
Both World No 1s triumphed against American opponents in last year's singles finals, with Sinner defeating Taylor Fritz and Sabalenka beating Jessica Pegula.
Britain's Jack Draper enjoyed his career-best run at a grand slam by reaching last year's semi-finals, while Emma Raducanu has shown flashes of form on the hard-courts as she returns to the scene of her stunning 2021 title.
As well as Novak Djokovic 's latest bid for a 25th major title and Carlos Alcaraz 's attempt to stop Sinner's winning streak, the return of Venus Williams as a 45-year-old wildcard adds to the storylines ahead of the final grand slam tournament of the year.
In what is usually an unpredictable tournament, teenager Victoria Mboko announced herself as one to watch by winning the Canadian Open title, while Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff will be out to dethrone Sabalenka too. Here's everything you need to know

Seahawks and Packers practice erupts into 50-man brawl with punches thrown between NFL rivals

Tempers flared between the Seahawks and Packers on Thursday as the NFC rivals took part in a massive brawl at their joint practice. In video of the incident from practice, Green Bay offensive lineman Zach Tom could be seen landing a couple of punches on his opponents, as tight end Tucker Kraft got in the mix as well. From there, benches cleared during what looked like a 50-man brawl as coaches scrambled to stop several groups of players from fighting. Fans in the stands at Ray Nitschke Field were audibly stunned by the violence, which occurred as the two teams have been practicing against one another ahead of a preseason game this weekend. Ultimately, the fighting died down enough for the practice to reportedly resume - but tensions continued to boil over afterwards Green Bay's Elgton Jenkins had to be restrained after practice, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Training camp fights are incredibly common, especially during joint practices between different teams, and Patriots coach Mike Vrabel actually broke up a fight himself earlier this month as his players brawled with the Commanders. In that case, he emerged with a bloody cheek after getting involved in the violence. The Seahawks and Packers have been practicing against one another this week ahead of their preseason finale on Saturday in Green Bay. Seattle - following a big offseason in which they swapped out quarterback Geno Smith for Sam Darnold - will begin their regular season on September 7 against the 49ers. The Packers will host their NFC North rival Lions that same afternoon as they kick off the season.

NFL captain threatened to 'f***ing kill' his wife in crystal meth-fueled sexual assault in front of their son, bombshell lawsuit alleges

Houston Texans safety Jimmie Ward has been accused of threatening to kill his wife in front of their son amid a crystal meth-fueled rage, in a bombshell lawsuit. In June, Ward was arrested on a felony domestic violence charge following an incident at his home where he allegedly choked Cristy West, with whom he was in a relationship for multiple years. He now faces a civil lawsuit - in addition to the pending criminal charge which is seeking more than $20 million in damages. Ward - who was named as the Texans captains for the 2024 season - is accused of forcefully entering West's home at around 4:20 a.m. on June 12. In the suit, West alleges that Ward was exhibiting 'erratic and aggressive' behavior and that he allegedly threatened to 'f***ing kill' West multiple times, It is also claimed that he 'dragged her into a bedroom', slapped and choked her. The commotion woke their son up before West attempted to calm him down, the lawsuit alleges. Ward then demanded that West perform oral sex on him, which she did out of fear. West eventually ran out of her home with her son while 'naked and visibly injured'. She managed to leave when Ward went looking for her phone, the suit alleges. She called 911, and Ward was then arrested. has reached out to Ward's representatives for comment. Stephen Jackson, who is representing Ward, said he is aware of the civil lawsuit filed by West but said he remains focused on the criminal case in Montgomery County, according to the Houston Chronicle. Ward has spent most of his career with the San Francisco 49ers, who picked him in the first round of the 2014 Draft. He played in the 2024 and 2020 Super Bowl s that they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs on both occasions. He joined the Texans in 2023 on a two-year, $10.5m deal that got extended by a year in 2024. He played 10 times for the team last year, recording 48 tackles and two interceptions, but his season ended early with a foot injury that required surgery. The Texans made the playoffs but lost in the first round against the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City - a game where Caitlin Clark joined Taylor Swift in the stands as she cheered on boyfriend Travis Kelce. Meanwhile, at the start of the month, Ward was apprehended by Montgomery County (Texas) police for consuming alcohol in violation of the terms of his June release, his attorney, Steve Jackson, told Daily Mail by phone. Ward was picked up on an outstanding warrant earlier in the day, according to a Montgomery County government website that neglected to mention any new allegations against the veteran defensive back. Jackson has since revealed to Daily Mail that this 'wasn't a new arrest,' but the consequence of Ward testing positive for alcohol, which he's prohibited from consuming as a condition of his June release – a standard measure in Montgomery County, according to Jackson.

Patriots WR Ja'Lynn Polk (shoulder) to miss 2025 season

August 21 - New England Patriots receiver Ja'Lynn Polk is slated to undergo season-ending shoulder surgery, according to multiple reports on Thursday. Polk apparently was injured while attempting to block during a preseason game against the Washington Commanders on Aug. 8. He immediately left the field after the play and eventually went to the locker room. Polk, 23, also underwent shoulder surgery last March and he missed all the offseason camps and workouts and also missed the beginning of training camp. The game against Washington was his first since the surgery. Polk was a second-round pick by the Patriots in 2024 but was mostly a non-factor. He caught 12 passes for 87 yards and two touchdowns in 15 games (seven starts). In his final college season (2023), Polk caught 69 passes for 1,159 yards and nine touchdowns for a Washington team that lost to Michigan in the College Football Playoff championship game. --Field Level Media
