Bus Éireann recorded €4.2m loss in 2024
That is according to the Labour Court which has recommended a combined pay increase of 6.75 per cent over a two-year period to the end of December 2026, along with a pay voucher of €500, for Bus Eireann's 3,200 workers.

The pay-row came before the Labour Court after the 3,200 workers represented by the NBRU, SIPTU, UNITE THE UNION, TSSA, CONNECT rejected pay proposals put forward by the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) by 64 per cent to 36 per cent.
The unions stated that the 3pc pay increase on offer for each year of the pay proposals was not sufficient or adequate to meet their aspirations.
The unions were looking for a straight pay increase comparable with other CIE companies and one that would provide pay parity with Dublin Bus.
The unions valued pay parity as requiring an increase of 12.7 per cent.

In response, Bus Éireann stated that the current pay proposal represents the very limit of what can be offered in a pay proposal and is reasonable, if not significant, in the context of what is affordable to the company.
Bus Éireann told the Labour Court that they believe that in terms of the marketplace it was a very reasonable offer.
Bus Éireann set out the cumulative cost of the proposal that was balloted on 'and stressed that it had made a loss of €4.2 million in 2024 and was projecting similar losses for 2025'.
Bus Éireann also submitted that the proposal included other improvements to terms and conditions which were valued at 1pc of pay per year with some groups benefiting from other changes and stated that the percentage increases should not be looked at in isolation.

In its recommendation, deputy chairwoman at the Labour Court, Louise O'Reilly stated that the pay increase is made up of a 3.5 per cent and a €500 voucher effective from January 1st this year.
A further pay increase of 3.25 per cent to be effective from January 1st 2026 and the €500 voucher to be payable to those employed on January 1st 2025 and remaining in employment at the date of acceptance of recommendation.
Ms O'Reilly said that the pay deal is to expire on December 31st 2026 and the parties agree to engage no later than four months before the expiry of this deal to secure a successor.

However, in its decision, the city council pointed out that there is a general presumption in the Dublin City Council Development Plan against the provision of dedicated short-term tourist rental accommodation in the city due to the impact on the availability of housing stock. The Council found that the proposal to continue the apartments for short-term letting 'would create an undesirable precedent for similar type development and would devalue property in the vicinity'. The planners concluded that the proposed retention of short-term residential use is not compatible with the architectural character, historic fabric and special interests of the protected structure. The Council planning report which recommended a refusal concluded that the continued use of the apartments for tourist accommodation 'would result in existing residential stock being lost to the residential housing system, meaning less long-term and secure accommodation will be available to the growing number of families and people who need it'. Advertisement Olympia Real Estate Limited lodged the planning application after the Council issued it with a Warning Letter over the use of the apartments for short-term letting. Planning consultants for the applicants, Cunnane Stratton Reynolds (CSR) state that 'enabling housing as short-term let accommodation in this instance redirects such demand away from mainstream housing'. The consultants state that 'the proposed tourism accommodation will assist in the attractiveness of the area for tourists and will promote a continued busy and vibrant city centre'. CSR states that its client's ability to acoustically meet the standards of normal accommodation is not available, given the protected status of the subject premises. Objecting to the planned retention, Fiachra Brennan of Oakcourt Park, Dublin 20 and who works on Parliament Street, said that 'these are high-quality urban apartments which should be available on the long-term rental market'. He said: 'The applicant has pointed to issues with regards to soundproofing and insulation – this should not preclude the use of the property for its intended purpose. He added: 'I work on Parliament Street – it is a vibrant area with a range of commercial and hospitality businesses but is also an important urban, residential city neighbourhood. This status should be protected.'

Gatwick strikes suspended after new pay offer
Strikes by baggage screeners at Gatwick Airport have been cancelled but further walkouts could still take place, the Unite union has screeners employed by ICTS were due to strike from 22 to 26 August over a pay dispute, but action has been suspended after an improved pay offer from said it would now ballot its members on the new offer. If rejected, the second round of strikes planned for 29 August to 2 September would go said it was "pleased" the proposed industrial action had been suspended. ICTS was contacted for comment. The union claims baggage screeners employed by ICTS are among the lowest paid workers at the airport and earn "just above minimum wage".Speaking before the new pay offer, Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: "ICTS has more than enough money to offer these workers a fair pay rise. Not doing so is just corporate greed."ICTS's Gatwick workers will receive Unite's complete backing for as long as it takes during their strikes for fair pay."The union said all flights out of Gatwick would be affected by the strikes and that ICTS was "entirely responsible" for the rejected this claim and said it was working to avoid any impacts and expected to operate a normal summer holiday flight schedule across strike dates.
