Petland Indian Ringneck bird thief has history of animal theft charges
A College Hill man accused of stealing three rare exotic birds from multiple Cincinnati-area Petland stores has a history of stealing animals, court documents show.
Dontas McCoy, 44, pleaded guilty April 10 in Fairfield Municipal Court to stealing two of the birds, a court official said. He was sentenced to 180 days in jail, with 100 of those days suspended. He also was ordered to stay away from Petland and Jungle Jim's properties, according to court records.
On March 31, officials say McCoy stole an Indian Ringneck bird from the Petland near Jungle Jim's in Fairfield.
Two days later, on April 2, McCoy stole a second Indian Ringneck from the Petland in Mason. The birds can cost up to $1,000 each.
Then on April 4, according to Hamilton County court documents, McCoy stole a third Indian Ringneck from the Petland in Symmes Township.
He was arrested the same day.
McCoy's criminal history dates back to the 1990s and includes animal abuse and theft charges, including a 2014 conviction for stealing a chihuahua from Animal House, a pet store in Mount Healthy. In 2016, court documents say McCoy stole a bird feeder from the Meijer in Colerain Township.
McCoy is serving his sentence at the Butler County Jail. The Hamilton County case involving the theft from the Petland in Symmes Township is still pending.
In a news release, Petland stated that the birds have all been returned to their stores, and although "stressed from the ordeal" they are healthy and being cared for by staff members.
'They are in good physical shape going back and forth from food to perch, but staff has noticed they are a bit skittish around people,' said Petland Communications Director Maria Smith.
'Previously they had been more comfortable with people, and the staff is working with them to rebuild that trust," Smith said. "All in all, they are doing well and will do well when they eventually go home with their forever families.'

Court records show that Thompson is the son of a former Democratic state representative from St. Paul who was sharply critical of police during his one term in office.

Santa Paula man charged in slaying of Ojai woman, 2023 death of Ventura man
A Santa Paula man was charged with two counts of murder on June 6 in the recent killing of an Ojai-area woman as well as the death of a Ventura man in 2023. The Ventura County District Attorney's Office announced that Christian Alexandre Hillairet, 24, had been charged in Ventura County Superior Court with two counts of felony willful, deliberate and premediated murder, according to a DA's office news release. He has not yet entered a plea. Hillairet is also accused of numerous special allegations, including commission of more than one murder, use of a deadly weapon and a prior strike. Such allegations can carry additional jail time if he is found guilty. Hillairet is accused of killing Carolyn Nino De Rivera, 26, and William Thompson, 44. Nino De Rivera's body was found in a home in the 12000 block of Sisar Road in the unincorporated area of Santa Paula, also known as the Upper Ojai area, on May 31, authorities previously said. The home was leased by Hillairet and the two were in an "on-again-off-again" relationship, said Ventura County Sheriff's Capt. Rob Yoos. Ventura Police Department and sheriff's investigators said they found evidence tying Hillairet to the Ventura man's killing. Thompson was found bludgeoned to death in Ventura on Nov. 3, 2023, according to the DA's office news release. 'The defendant's alleged actions reflect a chilling pattern of violence and cruelty,' DA Erik Nasarenko said in the release. 'Our office is committed to securing justice for these victims and prosecuting Hillairet to the fullest extent of the law.' Hillairet was arrested by the Ventura County Sheriff's Office with the help of federal and Mexican authorities in Rosarito, Baja California, on June 4. Investigators earlier had learned that Hillairet had crossed the border into Mexico through the San Ysidro border crossing early June 1. He was booked into Ventura County Main Jail on June 5 without the possibility of bail, court and jail records show. He is scheduled to return to court June 9.
