Manitou Springs Penny Arcade under new ownership after 92 years

Yahoo15-05-2025

(MANITOU SPRINGS) — The historic Manitou Springs penny arcade is switching owners, with a local taking over the largest arcade west of the Mississippi.
In 1933, Jack Kerns launched Bingo Jacks as a gaming hall. After the Colorado Attorney General ruled that for-profit bingo games were gambling and illegal, the Kerns family moved to coin-operated arcade games and instant photo booths. Kerns later died in the 1970s, and his wife sold the Arcade to two of their sons.
Now, long-time Manitou Springs local John Weiss is taking over the historic arcade.
'I see myself more as the Arcade's caretaker than as its 'owner,'' Weiss added.
Weiss graduated from Colorado College and returned to Colorado Springs to launch Colorado Springs Independent, and later acquired the Colorado Springs Business Journal. Weiss won't be leading the arcade alone, as two Manitou locals, Maria and Alain Navaratne will also help Weiss and current General Manager 'AJ' lead the arcade team.
'If the weather is fine, more than 2,500 people will visit the Arcade over the upcoming Memorial Day weekend,' said Maria. 'We will be working to ensure that we are well prepared.'
General Manager AJ will continue to oversee day-to-day operations and the 30 full and part-time employees.
'After working at the Arcade for the past eight years, what I love the most about my job is helping people have a wonderful time when they are on their vacations,' she said.
The arcade's summer hours being Thursday, May 16, where the arcade will remain open seven days a week 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., or later depending on demand per the arcade's website.
The Manitou Springs Penny Arcade can be found at 930 Manitou Avenue.

Egg prices have plummeted since Trump took office — after hitting all-time high in March

The price of eggs has dropped just over 61% since President Donald Trump took office in January, after spiking to an all-time high in March. The most recent data from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) shows white, large shell eggs are now $2.52 per dozen nationally. On Jan. 21, that same carton of eggs would have run an American about $6.49, according to data website Trading Economics. Trading Economics shows eggs were over $8 a dozen the first week of March. 'Shell egg demand posted a slight improvement headed into the Memorial Day weekend but remained well below average in the continuation of a trend that began during the sharp price increases in late winter,' the USDA Egg Markets Overview weekly publication said. Back in April, a study by Clarify Capital said over 30% of Americans had stopped buying eggs due to their exorbitant cost. Weaker demand and a lull in new cases of bird flu helped cool prices, analysts said at the time. 3 The price of eggs has dropped just over 61% since President Donald Trump took office after a spike in March. AP That same month, Reuters reported that the US had increased imports of eggs from Turkey, Brazil and South Korea in an attempt to increase supplies amid an ongoing bird flu outbreak that has killed nearly 170 million chickens, turkeys and other birds since 2022. Since the outbreak began in 2022, bird flu has affected over 166 million birds, including 127 million egg layers. This equates to an average loss of 42.3 million egg layers per year, or about 11% of the five-year average annual layer inventory of 383 million hens since the outbreak began, according to Bernt Nelson, an economist with the American Farm Bureau Foundation. 3 According to analysts, a weaker demand and a lull in new cases of bird flu helped cool prices. 'To date, USDA APHIS has confirmed 43 outbreaks in layer flocks in 10 states (AZ, CA, IA, IN, MO, NC, OH, PA, SD, and WA),' the Egg Markets Overview said.

Miller-Meeks denies Big Beautiful Bill Act would add trillions to national debt

Members of Congress are now on their Memorial Day recess and back in their home districts. Republicans in the House of Representatives left D.C. by adopting a big piece of Trump's agenda last week. It's officially called the Big Beautiful Bill Act. But this is a budget with spending details and tax cuts. Independent estimates say it would add $4 trillion to the national debt if this passes the Senate in its current form. A few quick specifics. It would extend the first Trump administration tax breaks, include new cuts on estate taxes and reduce Medicaid spending while adding a work requirement to be eligible. It would also limit dependents for SNAP food assistance, weaken court authority to enforce contempt charges for ignoring and defying court orders and injunctions, and a lot more than that. Those restrictions on Medicaid and SNAP food assistance fell under the purview of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Iowa Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks serves on it. For months Republicans maintained they would see no cuts. A crew with a group called Social Security Works asked the Congresswoman about that in March. 'You voted in this committee to advance to advance resolution that where you guys need to find savings for 880 billion dollars,' the group said. 'How are you going to find that savings without cutting Medicaid?' 'There are ways that we can find it and we will continue to that,' Miller-Meeks answered. 'As you know, we didn't make any cuts. All we did was pass a budget reconciliation solution.' A different crew with Social Security Works tried asking her about her vote in favor of the cuts to Medicaid and SNAP benefits in committee that got included in the final bill. Congresswoman Miller-Meeks would not stop to talk and hurried to get on an elevator for a conference meeting. That more than 1100-page budget package passed by the House of Representatives is still being digested. We mentioned a few of the ramifications. Host Jim Niedelman gets into that with Iowa Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks. She voted for it and joins him for a conversation. 'They underpredicted the effect of revenue growth during the first Trump administration,' Miller-Meeks said. To hear more, click on the video.
