The feast of sacrifice
For Muslims around the world, Eid al-Adha, or the Feast of Sacrifice, is one of the most important holidays of the year. It coincides with the final rites of the annual pilgrimage to Mecca and commemorates the sacrifice of the prophet Ibrahim.
Highlighted in the Islamic calendar among the most prominent celebratory occasions, Eid al-Adha is traditionally marked with devout Muslims buying and slaughtering animals and sharing two-thirds of the meat with the poor.
This year, the festivities, including a special prayer followed by the sacrifice of an animal, took place between 5 and 9 June.
This year, Octa broker joined in the celebration of 'The Feast of Sacrifice' and helped underprivileged citizens of Indonesia, Malaysia, and Nigeria.
Malaysia
Octa traditionally teamed up with Azeehan, the broker's long-time charity partner and the driving force behind many local initiatives, to distribute the Qurbani meat in Kelantan. Thanks to this humanitarian effort, several hundreds of underprivileged local citizens received the much-needed festive food. 'Octa broker has been supporting local communities during the Eid al-Adha for three years in a row. This consistent participation and care have been very helpful in bringing people together and building up the festive spirit during the Feast of Sacrifice, a very special and joyous occasion for all Muslims', said Azeehan.
Indonesia
Together with IDEP, Octa supported 37 single mothers across Bali as a part of the Family Bucket Project. Single mothers in Bali face significant economic and social challenges rooted in unstable incomes, inadequate labour protection, and vulnerable living conditions. They often struggle to meet even their basic needs and those of their children, while insufficient education and professional skills further hinder their access to employment in Bali's tourism-dominated economy.
These challenges become even more pronounced during Eid al-Adha, when single mothers must work even harder to provide the best they can for their children. Octa and IDEP distributed targeted support packages to 37 single-mother households in Bali to help them enjoy the holiday.
Octa's partner in this project, IDEP develops and delivers practical programs and public education activities to communities in need all over Indonesia.
Nigeria
Octa joined forces with a local charity, KIR (Keeping it real) foundation, to support two socially beneficial initiatives.
1. Training 15 young small business owners of the city of Port Harcourt in digital literacy skills. Local entrepreneurs lacked rudimentary information and communication technology skills, severely restricting their ability to scale up their businesses and affecting their financial outcomes. Octa and KIR foundation organised this charity training to empower business owners and propel them towards success in the modern, technology-driven world.
2. Training 15 young women in vocational skills. To provide local young women with easy-to-pick-up and in-demand career opportunities, Octa and KIR foundation organised free week-long workshops in basic makeup artistry and headgear craft. These skills will allow them to earn a living and strengthen their social status.
Keeping true to its mission of benefiting local communities in various regions, Octa consistently engages in various charitable activities. For example, during the New Year holidays, the broker sponsored an emergency support program in Malaysia to help victims of a severe flood.

Kelantan has received RM967 million, Anwar, who is also the finance minister said. These funds were meant to implement projects and programmes that benefit the people of the two states, he said, adding that the allocation was not distributed to other states. Anwar said this in a parliamentary reply to Ahmad Marzuk Shaary (PN-Pengkalan Chepa), who wanted to know the status of the payment of petroleum royalties to the east coast states. He said the wang ehsan was distributed to Terengganu and Kelantan despite no petroleum being 'won and saved' from the two states. In March last year, Anwar said his administration allocated a total of RM1.55 billion for Terengganu's development last year, despite petroleum royalties amounting to only RM786 million. He said the development expenditure of the PAS-led state increased to RM1.59 billion this year. Anwar also said total petroleum royalties for Terengganu increased during his administration compared to when PAS and Bersatu were in the federal government, with only RM399 million recorded in 2022.

Borrowing only for development, not operating expenses, says Anwar

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim today defended Putrajaya's borrowing strategy, stressing that government loans are being channelled towards long-overdue development needs and not for operational expenditure. 'We are not borrowing for operating expenses. We are borrowing, and at a reduced amount, for development expenditure. 'Why? Because of the condition of our schools, our hospitals, the rural areas, and flood-prone zones,' he told the Dewan Rakyat during Prime Minister's Question Time today. Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (PN-Kuala Kangsar) had asked Anwar whether the government was managing the national debt responsibly, given that it had risen from RM1,079.1 billion in 2022 to RM1,247.6 billion by the end of 2024 – almost 65% of the country's gross domestic product Anwar said the development priorities had been listed in the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), which he urged all MPs to read before criticising. 'These items have already been outlined in the 13MP and must be read.' He also dismissed claims that the unity government was favouring certain communities over others in its allocations. 'If they say we are allocating for Chinese new villages, but not for Bumiputeras, it means they haven't read it,' he said. 'Because if you read the plan, Bumiputera allocations are among the highest – including for Malay reserve land in urban areas. This has never happened before, since independence.' Criticising previous administrations for making grand claims about defending Malay interests without taking any real action, he urged MPs to fully understand government policies before debating them in Parliament. Anwar also said that reducing the national fiscal deficit was essential, and warned that continued excessive borrowing would be irresponsible and unfair to future generations. He also said popular policies without financial discipline would damage the country's long-term stability. He said his administration was the first to take concrete steps toward fiscal reform, leading to improved investor confidence both domestically and internationally. Anwar also touched on the government's phased plan to reduce the fiscal deficit, saying that failure to do so would cause debt to spiral out of control and public confidence in Putrajaya's fiscal policies to erode. He said the government would continue to provide targeted subsidies, such as for electricity and fuel, to avoid burdening the people. Anwar also criticised those defending blanket subsidies that benefit foreigners, asking whether they truly represented Malaysians.

Penang to roll out second phase of iSejahtera payments from Aug 6
GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government will proceed with the second phase of iSejahtera payments for this year via electronic funds transfer to 9,405 recipients from Wednesday (Aug 6). State social development, welfare and non-Islamic affairs xommittee chairman Lim Siew Khim (pic) said the disbursement, amounting to RM1,721,300, reflects a continued commitment to the people's welfare. She said Phase 2/2025 payments will only be made to new applicants who registered before June 30 each year, while applications received after that date will be processed for Phase 1/2026. "For Phase 2/2025, the breakdown and number of recipients are as follows: the senior citizen appreciation schene covers 7,187 recipients totalling RM1,437,400; single mother assistance is for 317 recipients, amounting to RM317,000; "The golden housewife appreciation scheme involves 1,280 recipients totalling RM1,280,000; and aid for persons with disabilities will be given to 621 recipients amounting to RM124,200,' she said in a statement on Tuesday (Aug 5). Lim said the state government has disbursed RM53.83mil to 285,816 recipients across various categories under Phase 1 and Phase 2 from January to July. This included RM41,987,600 for the senior citizen appreciation scheme to 209,938 recipients, and RM1,064,400 for single mother assistance to 10,644 recipients. "Other categories comprise the golden housewife appreciation scheme with RM4,423,100 for 44,231 recipients; RM3,121,600 for 15,608 persons with disabilities; the Anak Emas one-off payment of RM540,200 to 2,700 recipients; and the one-off death benefit contribution totalling RM2,695,000 for 2,695 recipients,' she added. She urged all applicants to promptly update their bank account details to ensure smooth disbursement for Phase 1/2026.
