Pitching in: Playing road hockey to help in the fight against cancer

The organizer: Erica Howe The pitch: Helping raise more than $3-million The cause: Princess Margaret Cancer Centre Erica Howe has finally turned a corner in what has been the worst year of her life. Ms. Howe, 33, was diagnosed with breast cancer 12 months ago. Since then she's had surgery, chemotherapy and several rounds of hormone-suppressing medication. She also had to give up her hockey career, which included serving as an emergency goalie for the Toronto Sceptres of the Professional Women's Hockey League, and take a leave from her job as a firefighter in Mississauga. She's followed a careful plan to ensure the cancer doesn't return and she's grateful to the tremendous support she's received from her wife, her firefighter colleagues and her Sceptres teammates. Pitching in: Building schools and health programs in Cambodia 'Today I'm feeling better,' Ms. Howe said this week. 'The last two weeks, I've really come around a corner and felt stronger mentally and physically.' Last month Ms. Howe felt good enough to travel to London for her brother's wedding and spend a few days in Ireland with her family. 'I think it was just a break from life here and being able to go somewhere else and come back and be like, okay, you know, I think I got this.' She's also helped out at a hockey camp this summer and participated in a street hockey tournament for charity. And she's slowly returned to work with the fire service. Now she wants to contribute to the fight against cancer. On Sept. 27, she'll take part in the Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer tournament in aid of Toronto's Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. The annual event attracts around 150 teams and raises more than $3-million that goes toward research. Ms. Howe said she hopes to be a trailblazer in cancer just as she has been in hockey. 'That's a big thing with hockey, especially women's hockey; how can we make it better for the next generation?' she said. 'I think that's the same thing with my cancer diagnosis. So many people have come before me and been in these trials and been in these research studies, and they've kind of put it on the line.' She has no idea if her cancer will return but for now she's just trying to live her life as normally as possible. 'And making sure I'm doing the things that I love. That's most important.' pwaldie@

Elks aim to 'validate' their work vs. Argonauts

(Photo credit: Anne-Marie Sorvin-Imagn Images) Cody Fajardo aims to continue his strong play on Friday as the Edmonton Elks host the Toronto Argonauts in a battle of cellar-dwelling teams in their respective divisions. Fajardo has fared well since taking over for Tre Ford under center, throwing for 892 yards and five touchdowns over the last three games. The two-time Grey Cup champion threw for 289 yards and two scores to lead the Elks (2-6) to a 23-22 victory over the Montreal Alouettes last Friday. Fajardo found fellow former Alouette Kaion Julien-Grant for a 15-yard touchdown with 15 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. The late scoring strike enabled Edmonton to notch its first win since a 39-33 victory over the Ottawa Redblacks on July 6. 'You can't rest on your laurels, right?' Fajardo said. 'Just because we win a football game, 'OK, everything's figured out.' 'Like I said, you validate the work. But that doesn't mean that I'm not going to do the extra stuff, I'm not going to do what I need to do to get that win.' The Elks will now set their sights on a Toronto defense that yielded 429 yards of offense to Ottawa in a 46-42 setback to the Redblacks on Saturday. The defending Grey Cup champion Argonauts (2-7) saw their 21-point lead in the first quarter go by the boards, much to the chagrin of head coach Ryan Dinwiddie. 'I sound like a broken record talking to them after the game,' Dinwiddie said. 'I just told them I'm not going to quit on them and I don't think those guys quit on us, but I think we have some pretenders in the building who like to talk a big game and don't show up on game day. 'If you don't love it, let me know. I know I love it and I'm not going to quit.' Nick Arbuckle completed 32 of 38 passes for 317 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for another score. Arbuckle, who is second in the CFL in passing yards (2,651) and passing touchdowns (16), will now take aim at an Edmonton defense that has allowed at least 28 points on six occasions this season.

(Photo credit: Reid Glenn / USA TODAY NETWORK) The Toronto Sceptres announced a two-year contract with forward Emma Gentry on Tuesday. The 22-year-old Michigan native was Toronto's first pick in the 2025 PWHL Draft, going in the second round as the 11th overall selection. 'Emma brings a high level of compete, a desire to grow, and has a very high ceiling,' Sceptres general manager Gina Kingsbury said. 'We believe that she is a great fit for our team and we can't wait to see her develop under our great coaching staff.' Gentry scored double-digit goals in each of her last four seasons at Minnesota's St. Cloud State and helped the United States win gold at the 2020 IIHF World Women's U18 Championship in Slovakia.
