'I was a 20st secret eater then I was diagnosed with diabetes'

Mark Fettes used to hid his binge shopping on his credit card so his wife wouldn't know what he was doing but then he knew he had to change and lost more than 8st in less than a year
A 20st tech expert says his secret snacking is in the past after a shock diagnosis which led him to lose more than eight stones in weight. Mark Fettes was getting "bigger and bigger" until he was told he had type 2 diabetes.
Knowing he had to do something he joined Slimming World and lost the weight - and along with it put his diabetes into remission in less than eight months. Mark, from Lancashire, says: 'I'd been getting bigger and my health was really suffering.

"As well as high blood pressure which I was on medication for, I was then diagnosed with type 2 diabetes which worried me. My wife Nikki and I would have takeaways two to four nights a week and most days working from home, I got into a habit of eating secretly.

"I'd order a fast-food breakfast delivery or as soon as Nikki left for work, I'd nip to the local shop and buy five or six microwave burgers, a large bag of cheese balls and a two-litre bottle of cola. I'd even buy it with my credit card so Nikki wouldn't find out.
'Although I'd tried Slimming World in the past, I'd stopped going to group after three weeks and never really followed the plan. I realise now that by never staying for the group support, I wasn't learning anything about the plan, my relationship with food or how to change my habits.
"My doctor suggested I try Slimming World on a 12-week referral programme. Then Nikki said she wanted to join a group, and while I'll admit I thought it would be a waste of time, I went along with her for support.'
Slimming World on Referral is a partnership scheme with the NHS which provides people living with overweight or obesity with access to a 12-week weight loss plan from Slimming World. It's available in 72 areas across the UK.
Mark joined his Fleetwood group in May last year weighing 20st 8lbs. He says: 'When we arrived at our local Slimming World group and met Sarah, our Consultant, my view soon changed. There was such an electric atmosphere and everything clicked.

"There were lots of other guys there who were so supportive and I was blown away by everyone's journeys. I left feeling inspired and feeling that I could really make this work.
"As soon as I found out all my favourite meals were still on the menu, so long as they were cooked in a healthy way, I knew this was a plan I could stick with. I lost 8lbs that first week."

He said he was soon helping other people adding: "Knowing everyone was genuinely rooting for me was incredible. I genuinely wish the sessions were longer because I love it so much.
'As someone living with type 2 diabetes, I was given tailored resources – including a dedicated booklet created in partnership with Diabetes UK. It made it easy to adapt the Slimming World plan to my needs while staying in line with my healthcare team's advice. Knowing the support was backed by Diabetes UK gave me real confidence I was doing the right thing for my health.
"My relationship with food has totally changed and I've fully embraced new habits so I know I'll be able to keep the weight off forever. We cook from scratch so much nowadays, with lots of lean meat and vegetables. As we both lead such busy lives, we love the convenience of the Slimming World Free Food range from Iceland, too. We've always got Slimming World chips in the freezer.

'I led a very sedentary lifestyle before, working from home and sitting down for eight hours. The most exercise I did was a walk at the weekend and some housework. My fitness was non-existent and I'd be lucky to manage 10 minutes walking on a treadmill.'
He says that has now changed explaining: 'At the start, I couldn't even entertain the idea of any exercise. As I started losing weight though I began to move more by getting off my chair and walking around the house and going for regular brisk walks. After a month I realised I was enjoying fitness again – I used to work out in my 20's but had stopped.

'These days, I'm fitter than I've ever been – I'm a regular at the gym and even run there and back most days. My favourite way to start the day is a run along the seafront before work.
"Before Slimming World, I was just an overweight guy going through the motions, not thinking much about my health or how I looked. Now, I feel like a completely new man. Being active and outdoors again isn't just good for my body – it's lifted my whole outlook on life.
'I used to struggle to find clothes that fit and would rely on basic supermarket 4 or 5XL t-shirts instead of things I really wanted to wear. Since I've lost weight, the impact on my everyday life has been incredible – I'm healthier, full of energy and I feel much more confident.

'Eight months after joining Slimming World, my health check revealed that my type 2 diabetes had gone into remission. My health has turned around completely – doctors used to be worried I'd have a heart attack, now I've come off my blood pressure medication and I've even stopped snoring and sleep much better.'
Mark's experience backs up research published in the journal Archives of Diabetes & Obesity showing that people with type 2 diabetes can improve their diabetes management by making healthy lifestyle changes and losing weight following Slimming World's programme. The research revealed, of the members surveyed, 33.9% of those with type 2 diabetes reported their diabetes had gone into remission; this increased to 51% for those who'd lost at least 10% of their body weight; 61% were able to reduce or stop taking their diabetes medication and 81% saw improvements in their blood glucose (also known as blood sugar levels) management.

Diabetes UK estimates that 1.3 million people are currently living with type 2 diabetes but are yet to be diagnosed. Douglas Twenefour, Head of Clinical at Diabetes UK, says: 'We are proud to be working with Slimming World, supporting members who are living with diabetes, or at risk of type 2 diabetes. By combining our expertise on weight loss, long-term healthy eating and diabetes, we are committed to helping people build healthier habits and live healthier lives.'
Dr Sarah-Elizabeth Bennett, Senior Research Associate at Slimming World , says: 'The improvements Mark has made to his health are incredible and our research shows many members experience similar outcomes. Slimming World's partnership with Diabetes UK makes that support even stronger and enables us to further deepen our understanding of the challenges and misconceptions people living with diabetes face.
'Slimming World's flexible healthy eating plan can be easily tailored for members like Mark to fit their individual needs and to make sure it's in line with the dietary advice from their healthcare professional. It enables members to enjoy a wide variety of healthy everyday foods – like fresh fruit and veg, lean meat and poultry, fat free dairy, eggs, pasta, rice and grains.'

Sarah Wells runs the Fleetwood Slimming World group and is Mark's Consultant. She says: 'To think it was a year ago that Mark joined my group – it's been incredible to see his progress. His success just goes to show how Slimming World makes a real difference in people's lives – we have the best package in group to help members lose weight, including techniques we share to help members understand themselves better, looking at those foods or situations that are stoppers for them and finding ways to protect their weight loss in the long term.
"By changing his habits around food and activity in ways that worked for him, Mark was able to lose more than 8st and go on to put his type 2 diabetes into remission. I'm so very proud of him.'

Ipswich woman could lose sight after parasite 'burrows' into eye

A woman fears she could partially lose her sight after a water parasite "burrowed" into her eye when she went swimming while wearing contact Greenfield, of Rendlesham, Suffolk, has been diagnosed with acanthamoeba keratitis, a painful infection of the cornea - the outer layer that protects the 58-year-old sought help after her vision became blurred and her right eye started to feel "really sore" and sensitive to light while she was working on her computer."My vision is incredibly blurred and it feels a bit like getting chilli, lemon juice or bleach in your eye," said Mrs Greenfield, who has had to be signed off work. "The worst case scenario is I lose sight in my right eye and the best case scenario is I lose a little bit – but I am just going to do what I can to try and get better," said Mrs Greenfield."Since I started treatment it has got a little better, but I am having to wear dark glasses and put blankets against my curtains because I can't bear the light." According to the NHS's Moorfields Eye Hospital website, around two in 100,000 contact lens wearers per year in the UK are diagnosed with acanthamoeba infection is caused by a microscopic organism usually found in bodies of water as well as domestic tap water, swimming pools, hot tubs, soil and patients can recover within three to six months, while more complicated cases can prove debilitating for as long as a Greenfield was advised to go to Ipswich Hospital after her optician declared she was suffering from a "medical emergency" and needed urgent has since undergone numerous examinations, biopsies and intensive treatment and has had surgery to remove the top layer of her cornea."If you wear contact lenses [the parasite] can get trapped behind the lens and start to burrow into the eye," she said."It is incredibly rare but that, unfortunately, is what's happened to me." 'Eye health regime' Vision Direct says swimming with "contact lenses or getting them wet should be avoided at all times" as doing so can make eyes "vulnerable to contamination by harmful bacteria".Mrs Greenfield, who has worn contact lenses for 40 years, has now warned others to wear goggles and be mindful of purchasing lenses on the internet."I was always told not to sleep in contact lenses, that was a big no-no, but I don't know why opticians are not telling people not to wear them when they shower or swim," she told the BBC."Behind the lens is a lovely, warm environment for a germ to breed so people need to be really, really careful."If I had known then I wouldn't have worn my lenses while swimming." Max Halford, clinical and policy director of the Association of British Dispensing Opticians, said opticians "will always advise on how to handle, clean and replace your contact lenses"."Every UK-based contact lens optician should always provide advice on the correct care and usage of contact lenses both at the initial fitting appointment and at every follow up," he said."We recommend patients always attend their local opticians for routine contact lenses appointments, usually every 24 months or more often if recommended by your eye care professional."These appointments are a vital part of your eye health regime if you are a contact lens wearer and they are an opportunity for your optician to review and check the correct procedures are being followed for successful contact lens wear."Always check with the supplier of your contact lenses that after appointments and advice is available including advice on what to do in an emergency." Nurses to vote on 3.6% pay deal amid concerns of further strike action

Nursing staff will start voting on Monday on the government's 3.6% pay deal amid warnings of further industrial action and strikes. Around 345,000 members of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) will be asked if the pay award is enough in what was described as the biggest single vote of the profession ever launched in the UK. Last month, the Westminster government accepted the recommendation of the independent pay review body, recommending nursing staff in England's NHS receive a pay rise of 3.6%. The RCN described the award as 'grotesque', saying the increase would be 'entirely swallowed up by inflation' – with doctors, teachers, prison officers and the armed forces all receiving bigger increases. An identical award was made in Wales, while in Northern Ireland, the same increase has yet to be agreed. The RCN say the vote will be crucial in determining the next steps, which could include a ballot for strike action. The vote will include RCN members working in the NHS in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Currently attending an international nursing conference in Helsinki, Professor Nicola Ranger, RCN general secretary, is expected to say on Monday: 'I'm with nurses from around the world today asking why it is our ministers in the UK who have once again put nursing at the back of the queue when it comes to pay. 'Nursing is an incredible career, but despite being the most valued profession by the public we continue to be weighted to the bottom of the NHS pay scale and are set to receive one of the lowest pay awards. 'It is time to show that nurses are valued and, from today, hundreds of thousands of nursing staff working in the NHS will give their verdict on whether 3.6% is enough. 'When our members vote, they won't just be voting on the fairness of the award for themselves, but if it's enough to turn our profession around.' The RCN said nursing staff in England have faced more than a decade of pay erosion since 2010/11, with pay down by a quarter in real terms. As a result, there are more than 26,000 unfilled nursing posts, while student recruitment has 'collapsed' and the number of colleagues quitting is 'skyrocketing', said the RCN. NHS workers, including nurses, staged a series of strikes under the previous Conservative government in bitter disputes over pay.

Call for change for 'isolated' unpaid Cambridgeshire carers

Urgent change is needed to prioritise "unsupported, isolated and overlooked" unpaid carers as they struggle with growing challenges in their lives, according to a charity Together, based in St Ives, Cambridgeshire, has gathered first-hand accounts from people it supports across the county and revealed widespread difficulty in seeing a GP, money worries, and carers' wellbeing sacrificed as they look after loved ones with disabilities or long-term conditions."Thousands of unpaid carers across our region are doing extraordinary things, yet they feel neglected, taken for granted and ignored by government and decision-makers," said chief executive officer Miriam Martin. "Better investment in carers' welfare is not only a moral imperative – but a financially sound strategy, saving billions for the NHS and adult social care systems."The Carers Speak Out report has been released to mark Carers Week, which begins on Monday. Based on contributions to its online platform, Caring Together found escalating financial pressures, driven by changes to benefits such as the winter fuel payment, rising energy costs, and the overall cost of living. Many carers had been forced to reduce working hours or give up work entirely, at the expense of their financial stability and personal wellbeing. 'Self-care is a priority' People also shared the emotional and physical toll of caring, with many suffering emotional distress as they watch a family member become increasingly unwell, and struggle to get them the help they carer wrote of her mum who had dementia: "It's a struggle keeping a confused lady safe and calm. "It's heartbreaking."Another carer, Jo, lives in Cambridgeshire and has previously shared her experience of looking after her mother, who has Alzheimer's."It's very difficult when you start caring because you want to put their needs above yours but you have to realise that if you don't prioritise your mental health and wellbeing you will not be able to do the job of caring," she said."It has taken me three and a half years to realise my self-care is a priority."It's more tiring than you think it will ever be and you can't do it on your own, you need other people to help and the forums and support groups out there like Caring Together can help a lot."The charity is calling on GP surgeries to recognise and prioritise unpaid carers and the people they care for, and for MPs to advocate for thousands of their constituents in the same is also urging employers to become carer-friendly, with the support of the charity, which would enable more people to stay in Department for Health and Social Care has been approached for comment.
