7 million pounds of WA food at risk as federal cuts loom
Food banks in Washington are bracing for federal budget cuts, which could result in the loss of 7 million pounds of food.
Food Lifeline, which serves 300 food banks across the region, is calling for community support.
SEATTLE, Wash. - Local food banks are bracing for the impacts of federal budget cuts that could result in the loss of 7 million pounds of food. Food Lifeline, which serves 300 food banks across the region and provides assistance to 1.7 million people, is calling for community support as critical programs benefiting tribes, small producers, schools, and low-income families face potential funding reductions.
Last year, Food Lifeline distributed 70 million pounds of food. The anticipated federal cuts represent a 10% decrease in resources, a loss that would significantly affect food distribution efforts.
Mark Coleman, a spokesperson for Food Lifeline warns severe consequences for families already struggling with food insecurity.
"These new cuts are devastating," Coleman said. He says these new cuts are going after programs they've been working with for the last four to five years.
As quickly as food arrives at Food Lifeline, it is packed and shipped to smaller food banks throughout the region. The demand for food assistance has only grown since the pandemic.
"We thought the numbers would go down, but they kept going up because of inflation and supply chain issues," Coleman said.
By the numbers
According to Food Lifeline, one in eight families in western Washington relies on food banks. The organization warns that cuts to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's budget will erode this safety net.
The cuts total about $1.9 million in lost funding which the food bank says will affect key programs, including the Local Food for Schools Program, which provides Washington state with $660 million to purchase fresh, healthy food from local farmers for schools and childcare centers.
"Most kids that receive free or reduced lunches, that's their only hot meal during the day," Coleman added. "The bottom line to all of this is that it's going to be families in western Washington who suffer."
The ripple effects of these budget cuts not only threaten food banks but also the local farmers who have expanded their operations to meet increasing demand.
"Those farms have grown, they've increased their capacity, and now they're not going to get paid for that food, so they're putting our farmers in a bit of jeopardy as well," Coleman said.
Another $500,000 is being cut from TEFAP, a federal program that helps distribute food to low-income communities and $500 million from the Local Food Purchase Assistance Program, both of which help food banks source fresh, local produce.
The Food Research & Action Center warns that proposed policy changes could strip free meal access from 475,000 Washington students, pushing even more families to food banks.
The financial setback comes at a time when food bank visits are up by 20%.
"What does hunger look like?" Coleman asked. "The truth is – it doesn't show."
He pointed out that many of those seeking assistance are working families struggling with the rising cost of living.
"The majority of them today are families that were just getting by before, before eggs were $7 a dozen, before gas was $4.75 a gallon," Coleman said.
What's next
Food Lifeline fears that funding cuts will continue, especially as Washington state faces a $12 billion budget shortfall.
"If there are cuts to the state budget, it's going to affect this food safety net. It's going to affect school programs, senior meal programs," Coleman said.
Despite the setbacks, Coleman says Food Lifeline will do it best to recoup the lost funding through other channels. "We always want to make sure we're there when people need us," Coleman said.
That's why they need your help. "Volunteering is critical of us," Coleman said. "It takes us about 15 to 16,000 volunteers every year to sort and repack the donated food that we receive."
We're going to do our best to make up that difference," Coleman said. "We're gonna we're gonna find donors, we're gonna work with foundations and other sources to bring that money back in. But right now, it's kind of devastating"

It's been a little over six months since President Donald Trump assumed office for his second term. In that time, the economic landscape has shifted quite drastically: The new administration has implemented broad tariffs on U.S. trade partners, the stock market has both plummeted and soared to historic heights, hiring is down, fears of a recession are on the rise and, perhaps most notably for everyday Americans, consumer prices are changing. Now $6.34, the cost of ground beef hit all-time highs for the sixth consecutive month, jumping another 4% since June. But it's not just backyard barbecues and ballpark dogs that are getting more expensive — bananas, electricity and chicken also remain at or less than a cent away from their record prices, according to the latest data from the Consumer Price Index. Across the board, consumer prices are about 2.7% higher than they were this time last year, an increase economists largely attribute to the president's sweeping tariffs pushing costs higher. And with even greater import taxes on more than 90 countries taking effect last week, it may not be the last time the price of consumer goods and services tips the scale. What US consumers can expect from new tariffs on imported goods The Tribune is tracking 11 everyday costs for Americans — eggs, milk, bread, bananas, oranges, tomatoes, chicken, ground beef, gasoline, electricity and natural gas — and how they are changing, or not, under the second Trump administration. This tracker is updated monthly using CPI data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. To see the average U.S. price of a specific good, click on the dropdown arrow below and select the item you wish to view. Egg prices have dropped for a fourth month straight, tumbling another 18 cents from June to July. According to the latest data, the average cost of a dozen large Grade A eggs is $3.60 nationwide. The sharp decline in egg prices is likely due to a decrease in bird flu cases in commercial and backyard flocks since the start of the year. In the first two months of 2025, tens of millions of birds were affected by highly pathogenic avian influenza across 39 states, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture data. As of July, the virus was detected in only one flock in Pennsylvania — representing less than 30,000 U.S. birds. Currently, the cost of eggs is about 13% less than it was in December 2024, before Trump took office. The cost of milk, meanwhile, is trending up again, jumping 13 cents month-over-month. There are a number of factors that could be driving this price increase. Like egg-laying hens and poultry flocks, dairy cows have been affected by bird flu. In April and May, the number of reported cases shot up again, so shoppers could be seeing the lingering effects of that disruption on the supply chain. The average price of white bread fell for the third month straight, landing at $1.85 per pound in July to mark a nearly three-year low. Shoppers can expect to pay more for their next bunch of bananas. The staple fruit cost a record-breaking $0.66 per pound in July — just a fraction more than the previous high set two months ago. Inflated prices are likely due to Trump's trade war, with tariffs imposed on the country's top banana suppliers. Imports from Guatemala and Honduras are levied at 10%, while Ecuador and Costa Rica's tariff rates are set at 15% and Mexico is subject to a 25% tax. No data on orange prices was available for July. In June, the cost of navel oranges went up more than 4% for an average price per pound of $1.63 nationwide. Is it a fruit? Is it a vegetable? Wherever you fall on the tomato debate, they may be getting more expensive. In July, the cost of field-grown tomatoes was approximately $1.79 per pound. That's 5 cents higher than the previous month but down roughly 13% since Trump took power. These changes, however, are largely tied to the harvesting season. Tomato prices vary depending on the time of year, rising through the late summer and fall, peaking in the early winter months and then plummeting in the spring. But there may soon be price movement outside the standard seasonality. Last month, the Trump administration announced it was placing a 17% tariff on most Mexican-grown tomatoes, which make up the vast majority of all tomatoes sold in the U.S. As a result, agricultural business experts anticipate American grocers will start charging more for the staple food. The average cost of fresh, whole chicken fell slightly month-over-month to $2.08 per pound. Prices remain less than a cent off June's all-time highs and are the second highest on record — going back more than 45 years. So why the elevated prices? Supply challenges and rising feed costs stateside mean the country is importing more. But beef and cattle sourced from other nations isn't necessarily a cheaper alternative. New tariff rates on top beef importers like Canada and Brazil took effect in August, raising the countries' already steep import taxes to 35% and 50%, respectively. Plus, last month the U.S. suspended all live cattle imports from Mexico due to concerns over a flesh-eating parasite, further straining the country's supply of beef and cattle. With increased costs both locally and abroad, this may not be the last time shoppers see record prices this year. From Laos to Brazil, President Trump's tariffs leave a lot of losers. But even the winners will pay a price. At approximately 19 cents per kilowatt-hour, the current price of electricity is one fraction of a cent off last month's record. Month-over-month changes in electric costs typically register at less than a cent, but that doesn't mean consumers won't feel it in their pocketbooks. Prices have been steadily increasing throughout the year, and in fact, July was the first month since January that the national average didn't notch a new high. As for Chicago, ComEd, the city's primary electric utility, announced earlier this year that a massive supply rate increase would hit this summer, warning that the cost for an average residential customer was expected to go up by $10.60 per month. For some Chicagoans, that supply increase translated to triple-digit hikes on their latest bills. Since December, the average price per kilowatt-hour has increased by more than 7%, and with long, hot summer days ahead, most Americans won't see lower rates anytime soon. Planning an end-of-summer road trip? You'll be happy to know gas prices are falling again — albeit only slightly. A gallon of regular unleaded costs $3.29, dropping 2 cents month-over-month. Prices in Chicago tell a different story. Now $3.52, the cost of gas in the city went up from the previous month and currently hovers about 7% higher than the national average, according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Nationally, gasoline prices are up 4.5% under the Trump administration — a difference of 14 cents per gallon. The nationwide cost of piped utility gas, or natural gas, has fallen for the first time in a year. From June to July, the price dropped 1 cent to $1.64 per therm. Yet, on average, Americans are paying close to 8% more to heat their homes, ovens and stovetops than when Biden left office. Tariffs are driving up the cost of saying 'I do'
As engaged couples plan their dream weddings this summer, an unforeseen economic force is increasingly impacting their decisions and budgets: the intricate and fluctuating world of global trade. President Donald Trump's tariffs - and the accompanying rate changes, moratoriums and trade deals - are translating into higher costs for traditional wedding components, from floral arrangements to designer gowns and even the celebratory spirits that toast a new union. Small business owners like Brandi Kenison at Lee Floral Design, a small Livonia, Michigan-based floral company that mostly supplies arrangements for luxury weddings, say this year's peak nuptials season has been more financially challenging than the COVID-19 pandemic, when curbs on indoor gatherings crippled many businesses. 'Obviously, during COVID, that made sense. (Now) it's very hard to put into words,' Kenison said. 'Will it (a new tariff) go through? How much will it go through? … It's really difficult for us to be transparent with our clients because we truly don't know. 'What's even harder is when prices on our end jump 25%, but we're contractually only able to raise the price by 10%. That means we absorb the difference, which quickly eats into our margins,' she said. 'It's definitely been a struggle.' According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 80% of all cut flowers sold in the United States are imported, with the primary sources being South American countries, notably Colombia and Ecuador. With current tariffs of 10% on Colombia and 15% on Ecuador, wholesalers, florists and ultimately, engaged couples face higher costs. 'When tariffs are placed on these imports, it inevitably drives up costs - not just for wholesalers and florists, but ultimately for the customer as well,' Kenison said. 'And it's not limited to just flowers. A lot of our day-to-day supplies, like vases, candles, and other staples, are sourced from countries like China, which means those items are also affected by tariffs, further increasing our overall expenses.' Wedding planners say brides are also experiencing higher prices for dresses and facing shipping delays. Meagan McPhail, owner of Mitten Weddings, said in an email that 'prices are up and timelines are longer' for dresses due to rising fabric costs. About 12.2 million wedding gowns are produced each year in China, and 70% of them are exported, according to Deep Wear. 'Even some U.S. designers still source their fabrics internationally, so it all adds up,' McPhail said. Tariffs are adding to already pricey wedding costs that average $300 to $600 per person, according to wedding planners Emma and Rebecca Targett of Meriwether Social. The Ann Arbor, Michigan-based mother-daughter duo planned Sophie Partington and Nicholas Kuchar's Aug. 2 wedding at the Michigan League Ballroom. 'Now, more than ever, that conversation is a part of our everyday planning process with clients,' Emma Targett said. 'Things just cost more right now: food, floral, specifically. Anything that's really commodity-based like that, things that are very supply chain dependent. 'So much of our day-to-day now is explaining to clients that food costs more so these catering bills are higher, a lot of times venue minimums have gone up because they have to account for their increased food cost as well,' she said. According to a survey conducted by The Knot of 741 engaged couples planning 2025 or 2026 wedding receptions, over half of the couples, or 53%, reported that tariffs had already impacted decisions about their celebrations. The survey also found that instead of reducing their overall budget, many couples are hiring professionals to navigate cost challenges, including booking well ahead of time to avoid paying more. Take couple Lydia Karpack, 23, of Plymouth and Alex Winnie, 24, of Belleville, Michigan, who will tie the knot at Detroit's Book Tower on Aug. 30. The high school sweethearts got engaged in downtown Plymouth in May 2024 and sought out Meriwether Social to plan their downtown Detroit wedding that is expected to include 145 guests and cost over $75,000. 'There's definitely things that you see that number that a vendor gives you, it's a big number, you're a little shocked about it. Weddings are becoming such this big thing,' Karpack said. 'You really have to evaluate what you really want to splurge on and what's going to be worth it and what you can find alternative ways to get the same look you're going for. It's about balance.' Since Karpack had the venue, photographer and DJ booked in early 2025, she effectively sidestepped some of the tariff-related price increases from vendors. Still, she was sticker-shocked by the prices of hydrangeas and tulips. 'A lot of florists have minimums. You have to start out at $5,000 or $10,000 for flowers and that doesn't include tax or the design fee,' she said. 'It's like that number, I think, scares people. It's a lot of money to spend on flowers. That was something we realized, 'let's find a different solution here and scale back a bit.'' She said 'no' to a huge arched floral wall but yes to the dress and veil she would wear from Magnolia Laine Bridal - Detroit. Cost for those: More than $3,000. 'My veil was pretty expensive,' Karpack said. 'I had no idea how much veils cost - for a couple yards of fabric, it's like $600. I was very shocked about that. I was going to do an Etsy veil for like $100, but matching the color up to a dress and you're looking at the color on a screen ... it just gets way too stressful.' Karpack said trimming the flower budget helped the couple afford their preferred reception site, the Book Tower. 'That was something we really wanted to splurge on and then find other ways to save around,' she said, 'so that we could still have the venue that we wanted.'
