Minister reviews preparations for heavy rains
Additional Director General PDMA, Syed Jawad Haider briefed the meeting that heavy showers are likely to begin on Sunday night, with this year's monsoon rainfall is expected to be 25 percent above normal.
The Provincial Minister directed authorities to ensure swift drainage of rainwater from low-lying areas and stressed that all available resources will be deployed to safeguard the public during the rainy spell.
Moreover, the four-day haematology training course organised by the University of Health Sciences (UHS) Lahore was concluded Friday with a certificate distribution ceremony. Addressing the ceremony, the vice- chancellor underscored the urgent need to restore clinical credibility through structured training and improved diagnostic practices.
Prof. Dr. Ahsan Waheed Rathore emphasized the critical need to regain lost credibility in clinical and laboratory practice. 'Even correct interpretation of a Complete Blood Count (CBC) report is often overlooked by professionals. Skills that should be embedded in our professional programs are conspicuously absent,' he remarked and said, 'We have restructured our MPhil and PhD programs to be time-bound and competency-driven. Our focus now is to build faculties in various disciplines and ensure consistent academic activity that contributes to stronger professional communities."
Head of UHS Haematology department, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Asif Naveed, shared plans to make such focused training a regular feature at UHS. 'We envision future sessions to explore even finer details of Haematology,' he said adding that there's a strong case for standalone modules.

CM Maryam pays surprise visit to DHQ Hospital Nankana Sahib
LAHORE: Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif paid a surprise visit to District Headquarters Hospital from DC office Nankana Sahib. She visited the emergency and other wards of the DHQ Hospital and inquired from the patients and attendants about the facilities being provided in the hospital. She inquired about provision of free medicines from every patient and checked the hospital slips. She appreciated the installation of a board displaying availability of medicines and its quantity in the Main Waiting Room of the hospital. She checked the time of arrival, diagnosis and provision of medicines of the patients. She appreciated the diagnosis of every patient within an average of one and a half hours along with provision of medicines. Earlier, the CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif reached the villages of Nankana Sahib to review the post-flood situation. She made a marathon visit stretching about a two-and-a-half-hour tour of Nankana Sahib City and suburban villages. She announced the construction of two flood drains in Nankana Sahib to protect people against devastating flood torrents. She directed an early completion of roads in Nankana Sahib and other development projects. She sought the beautification plan of Nankana Sahib within two weeks and further directed the issuance of funds in this regard at the earliest. She announced an increase in the number of electric buses for Nankana Sahib district. She reiterated her commitment for making Nankana Sahib a model city. She directed to ensure making zebra crossings and installing signboards in front of the school and directed to control the prices of 'Roti'. The CM directed to increase the number of clinics-on-wheels for Nankana Sahib and directed to improve the city's entrance routes, roads and build better shoulder roads on the sides of the city's main road. She also directed to include Dafar Khokhran and other villages in the Model Village Scheme. She visited the flood-affected areas in Jaslani Mor and inspected flood-affected houses and agricultural land. She launched the distribution of relief goods by PDMA in Miranpur village. PDMA is providing special kits, mosquito nets and clothing to the flood-affected families. She interacted with the flood victims. An elderly woman prayed for the wellbeing of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif for making an announcement of building a model village. She shook hands with all the women turn by turn and said, 'I have come to meet you, I have to converse with you as well'. She also visited the areas of Dholar Chowk, Gurdwara Janm Asthan Chowk, DPS Chowk, Berry Chowk, Chungi Chowk, Railway Road, Peer Ahmad Shah Road and Mananwala Phatak in Nankana Sahib. Seeing the Chief Minister, the public gathered in a large number and children came closer to her. She presented gifts of sweets to the children, talked to them, showed her affection to them. She inquired from the public about the administration's measures regarding provision of relief to the flood-affected people during floodwaters and torrential rains. She met with the members of parliament belonging to Nankana Sahib at the Deputy Commissioner's Office. Deputy Commissioner Nankana Sahib gave a detailed briefing about the flood situation and ongoing development projects. It was informed in the briefing that 1525 acres of land was submerged due to overflowing of rivers and canals in Nankana Sahib. About 22 villages in Nankana Sahib were affected by the flood. More than 20,000 encroachments were removed. Total 1194 special people were given 'Himmat Cards'. The CM directed to increase the number of beneficiaries of 'Himmat Card' scheme in Nankana Sahib. 788 loans have been granted under the 'Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar' project in Nankana Sahib and 400 houses are under construction. 176 green tractors were given on subsidy, while wheat farmers got 20 tractors free of cost. 267 livestock, 1,715 minority cards were given in Nankana Sahib and 242 agricultural tube wells are included in the solar scheme. She directed the relevant stakeholders to redress the loss of farmers whose crops were badly affected due to flood torrents. She directed provision of financial assistance to the residents of mud houses which collapsed due to the flood torrents, adding that grabbing of any land by the land mafia will tantamount to the failure of the relevant Deputy Commissioner and Commissioner. She underscored, 'It is heart rending to see the treatment being meted out to the people of Punjab in the past. UHS integrates six life-saving skills into core curriculum for health
LAHORE: The University of Health Sciences (UHS) Lahore has become the first institution in Pakistan to formally integrate six essential life-saving skills into the core curriculum of all health-related undergraduate programmes. Starting this academic year, students of medical, dental, nursing, and allied health sciences will be required to undergo training in these skills, including CPR, before they are allowed to sit for their final professional examinations. The six courses now compulsory for all students are: Cardiac First Response / Basic Life Support (Adult & Paediatric), Immediate Care Cardiac / Advanced Life Support Cardiac, Immediate Care Trauma / Advanced Life Support Trauma, Emergency Triage Assessment and Treatment (ETAT), Emergency Neonatal Care / Neonatal Resuscitation, and Emergency Obstetrics and Neonatal Care (EMONC). According to UHS, as many as 25,000 students from around 200 affiliated colleges will be trained annually, enabling them to provide emergency aid during cardiac arrests, accidents, and deliveries, potentially saving lives even before professional help arrives. The launch ceremony of the faculty training workshops was held here on Wednesday. Leading paediatrician Prof Sajid Maqbool was the chief guest. Speakers included UHS vice-chancellor Prof Ahsan Waheed Rathore, University of Child Health Sciences vice-chancellor and President of the Pakistan Paediatric Association (PPA) Prof Masood Sadiq, UHS pro-vice-chancellor Prof Nadia Naseem and Director of Professional Skills Development Prof Sarah Ghafoor. International health partners, including WHO Deputy Representative in Pakistan Ellen Mpangananji Thom and UNICEF Pakistan Health Manager Dr Safina Abdullah, addressed the gathering virtually. Ellen Mpangananji Thom noted that Pakistan currently has the highest neonatal mortality rate in the world and called the UHS initiative an essential step towards reversing this trend. 'Every life matters. Standardized and structured training for healthcare providers is key,' she said. Dr Abdullah called the programme a 'reunion of heart and mind for a common cause to save lives', echoing the Quranic verse: 'Whoever saves one life, it is as if he saved all of humanity.' She said this curriculum reform, now formally adopted, deserves applause and is expected to create a ripple effect across the health sector. UNICEF Punjab's Health Team Lead, Dr Quratulain Ahmed, lauded the UHS for fulfilling a promise made two years ago to incorporate neonatal resuscitation into the academic syllabus. 'This is not the work of weeks but of decades. Thanks to these efforts, the neonatal mortality rate in Punjab has dropped from 41 to 38 per 1,000 live births,' she said. Punjab launches drive to promote local horse breeds
LAHORE: The Punjab government has decided to launch an initiative for conservation of indigenous horse breeds. The Punjab livestock department on Wednesday convened the first meeting of the Technical Working Group constituted in this regard which was chaired by Provincial Minister for Livestock and Agriculture Syed Ashiq Hussain Kirmani. The meeting, held at the Livestock Department, was attended by Secretary Livestock Punjab Ahmad Aziz Tarar, Technical Coordinator Irtaza, Vice Chancellor of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) Dr Younas, renowned horse breeders, experts from Brooke Pakistan, and senior departmental officials. Minister Kirmani highlighted that, for the first time, the provincial government has prioritized the conservation of indigenous horse breeds. He said that under the Chief Minister's leadership, the livestock department has launched several initiatives for the benefit of livestock farmers, but horse breeds had previously received little attention. 'To change this, we are launching a focused project that includes training veterinary doctors at the tehsil level, ensuring availability of vaccines for diseased horses, and providing ultrasound and diagnostic facilities,' the minister announced. He lamented the absence of a distinct and officially recognized local horse breed in Pakistan, especially in Punjab, and called for coordinated efforts between the government and private sector to address this gap. He further noted the government's commitment to supporting the private sector in areas such as sexed semen, transplantation techniques, and equine nutrition. 'The input of this Technical Working Group will be pivotal in shaping effective strategies,' he added. Secretary Livestock Ahmad Aziz Tarar reaffirmed the department's seriousness in preserving local horse breeds and said that improvements in diagnostic infrastructure are already underway. Participants of the meeting deliberated on proposals to document the characteristics of indigenous breeds, promote quality breeding practices, and showcase these breeds at international forums. Experts emphasized the urgency of compiling a comprehensive record to prevent the extinction of rare horse varieties.
