Corrine Jackson's trial for alleged murder faces further delays

The much-anticipated murder trial against Corrine Jackson, accused of attempting to behead her teenage girlfriend eight years ago, has been hit with more delays.
This, as her legal team is questioning whether Jackson was warned about the implications of giving testimony during her bail application when she took the witness stand, which could be used against her during the trial.
Jackson took the stand in the Mitchell's Plain Magistrate's Court in 2017, where she claimed she acted in self-defense on the day of the murder in September 2017 in Colorado Park.
The State is set to prove Jackson stabbed her estranged girlfriend, Nadine Esterhuizen, 18, more than 20 times and attempted to cut her head off.
Jackson was found hiding in a locked toilet at the residence where Esterhuizen's body was found and was allegedly in possession of two daggers.
Transcripts of the court recordings are now being reviewed to determine whether Jackson was warned.
Two vital witnesses, that of the pathologist who conducted the post-mortem and the first responder, who were ready to take the stand last week, will now have to wait until August before their evidence will be heard.
A list of witnesses, which included the victim's sister Rhayader Esterhuizen, Rhayader's boyfriend, Laurenzo Adams and her brother and others, have taken the stand during the trial.
When taking the stand a year ago, Adams detailed how he knocked on the room door and screamed Esterhuizen's name.
He said he found the bathroom window open and saw a door closing, assuming the person inside was going to open the front door.
He explained that the door remained locked and eventually he asked another tenant to provide him with spare keys and that he was greeted by the horrific scene which, showed a blood stain from the lounge to the kitchen, with Esterhuizen covered in blood.
He then found Jackson inside the bathroom which had been locked.

Jackson is currently out on R5 000 bail and is also expected to bring her list of witnesses once the State closes its case.
Linda Jones of the Mitchell's Plain Resident's Association and the Community Policing Forum (CPF) said they were relieved that the case was finally under way following years of delays.
'We are happy that there is finally light at the end of this tunnel," she said.
'It is a never ending story with the changing of attorneys and so many delays
'We are very grateful for the prosecutor who wants to see this matter finalised.
'We pray for the family, it has been almost eight years since they have lost their loved one.
'We welcome this proceeding even though we wished the date was sooner but the rights of everyone must be upheld at the cost of others at times .'

Rape of 11-year-old: Closing arguments presented in bail hearing
The bail hearing of a 28-year-old man accused of raping and impregnating an 11-year-old Boksburg girl was again postponed at the Boksburg Magistrate's Court yesterday (June 9). The matter will resume on June 12. This follows the defence and the State presenting their closing arguments for the bail application. The accused's lawyer, Frik van Rensburg, said the investigating officer's statement contains no supporting evidence and should not be relied upon. He pointed out that the child initially denied the alleged rape when questioned by her mother, raising the question of how the court could then accept her version of events. ALSO READ: State opposes bail as officer testifies in child rape case 'The prompting of the victim could, with all due respect, be indicative of an ulterior motive,' he said. Van Rensburg said the child was only assisted by her mother when the statement was taken — in English, not her mother tongue. State prosecutor Kagiso Ralethata argued that the State's case is not weak. 'The only thing outstanding is the DNA results, which could take about nine months. The victim was assessed by a doctor and no independent evidence was handed in to show that the applicant would be acquitted,' he said. 'The contentious point was the circumstantial evidence in the form of a statement from the victim's sister. 'It was highlighted that the witness is out of the country and that the investigating officer has not yet obtained her statement. 'We cannot say whether we will be able to obtain the statement. I will argue that, although the statement is important to a certain degree, it is not a crucial piece of evidence. The State can proceed without it.' The suspect, who cannot be named to protect the child complainant, was arrested on April 22. Drawn out bail application of man (29) accused of raping a minor close to conclusion
BOKSBURG - The protracted bail application by a 29-year-old man accused of raping a minor is close to finality. This comes as both the State and defence prepare to deliver their closing arguments before the Boksburg Magistrates Court. The Ugandan national faces two counts of rape after he allegedly raped the minor in December 2019 and in December last year. The Grade 6 learner fell pregnant allegedly from last year's incident. The hearing of closing arguments is the final step before the magistrate considers the submissions of the state and the defence before handing down his judgment. The 29-year-old man is accused of a schedule six offence, which requires him to show the court that exceptional circumstances exist for his release on bail. The court will assess, among others, whether the Ugandan national is a flight risk, has a past criminal record or whether there's a risk that the accused may reoffend or interfere with evidence. The defence will attempt to discredit the witness presented during proceedings and argue that it is in the interests of justice that the man be released. The proceedings are expected to commence shortly before the accused is transported back to the Boksburg prison.
