World Snake Day celebrated with conservation awareness, philately initiative
A set of specially designed postcards featuring snake-themed illustrations were released on the occasion by senior officials — Sandesh Mahadevappa, A.V. Surya Sen, and Kajol Ajit Patil. The postcards are part of a creative initiative to engage the public on wildlife issues through philatelic outreach.
Over 300 students from five institutions — including BGS National Public School, AMC College, VV Puram Law College, Royal Public School, and Orchid International School — took part in the celebrations. The event emphasised the role of youth in species conservation and the importance of education in shaping future ecological stewards.
The organisers noted that urban areas like Bengaluru face increasing human-snake interactions due to habitat fragmentation. Educating children and the public about safe and respectful coexistence with reptiles is seen as a critical step toward reducing conflict and conserving biodiversity.

However, the festive enthusiasm has met a technical bottleneck with slow servers and delayed services, leaving customers waiting in long queues for hours to avail the service. Since July 21, post offices across the city, including the main GPO and local branches, have been grappling with sluggish operations. From Speed Post and registered mail to banking and parcel services, nearly all services have been affected by the delay. "I went around noon and was surprised to see people still standing since 10 AM. The staff was trying, but the system was too slow. I returned without posting anything. I'd rather use e-commerce platforms this time," said Monika Prakash, a schoolteacher from Upper Bazar Rajeev Mehta, a retired banker from Lalpur, said, "I just wanted to send a rakhi envelope to my son in Pune, on behalf of my daughters. I've been waiting for over 3 hours, but the system just keeps hanging. This never used to happen earlier." Sana Javed, a college student, added, "It took me almost two hours to get a simple Speed Post done. Many people were frustrated and left. I saw one woman cry because her parcel was to be sent and delivered urgently." Rupak Kumar Sinha, the senior superintendent of post offices (SSP), Ranchi Division, confirmed the issue. "Due to the Raksha Bandhan rush, traffic has increased, and yes, the system is slow. But it's not completely shut. The delay is due to a central software transition under India Post 's new IT 2.0 integration," he informed "Under India Post's IT 2.0 initiative, the department is moving from its earlier TCS-managed platform to a fully indigenous, in-house developed system. This aims to centralise and modernise postal, banking, and delivery services under one streamlined digital infrastructure," said another GPO official, requesting anonymity. "The new system will give India Post its own IT backbone, eliminating third-party dependency. It's a big shift, so temporary hiccups are expected," he added.

Two Himachal forest personnel honoured for rescuing 105 snakes
Hamirpur (HP), July 17 (PTI) Two forest personnel who rescued over 100 snakes last year were honoured on the occasion of World Snake Day here on Wednesday. Suresh Kumar rescued 60 snakes last year while Vinod Kumar rescued 45. Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Sameer Rastogi honoured the two, who were also awarded commendation letters and certificates by the Forest Department. Notably, snakes are found in forests and even in private and government houses during the summer and monsoon seasons and they bite human beings and animals, which at times proves fatal. During the programme, the field staff of the Forest Department were honoured for their commendable services, especially those working for the conservation of snakes. They were given digital certificates. Addressing the officers and employees of the department, Rastogi talked about the importance of snakes and their contribution to ecological balance. Six people have died due to snake bites so far in the current monsoon season since June 20. According to the state emergency operation centre, two deaths each were reported in Bilaspur and Hamirpur districts and one each in Kangra and Una districts.
