Washington, Malaysia Strengthen Ties at Bersama Warrior 2025
Bersama Warrior is an annual, bilateral joint exercise sponsored by the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command and hosted by the Malaysian Armed Forces. The exercise enhances U.S. and Malaysian defense readiness, improves interoperability, and strengthens the Department of Defense National Guard Bureau's State Partnership Program relationship between the Malaysian Armed Forces and the Washington National Guard.
"As we sharpen our operational planning, we also strengthen our ability to respond as a unified team to emerging challenges, whether they are humanitarian crises, natural disasters or regional threats to peace and stability," Ake said during his opening statement.
With more than 90 U.S. personnel participating, this exercise runs through June 26 and will provide the operational planning and lay the groundwork for next year's exercise. The primary goal of the annual exercise is to provide a venue for exchanging tactics, techniques and procedures for peace support operations, with an emphasis on counterterrorism and humanitarian assistance, while demonstrating the U.S. resolve to support the security interests of allies and partners in the Indo-Pacific.
"To us, this is more than just a planning exercise. It's a meaningful platform that grows operational readiness, strengthens our beautiful partnership and cultivates a spirit of mutual respect and cooperation of our armed forces," Zahani said.
Since formalizing their partnership in August 2017, the Washington National Guard and the Malaysian Armed Forces have consistently engaged in exercises such as Bersama Warrior. These regular interactions strengthen mutual capabilities, reinforce security cooperation, and foster meaningful connections between their personnel.

Vaithilingam has dedicated his life to public service. His contributions to the nation have now been immortalised in the biography, Vaithi – A Life of Service, written by veteran journalist A. Kathirasen. National Land Finance Cooperative Society managing director Datuk B. Sahadevan described the 91-year-old, fondly known as Vaithi, as someone who exemplifies Malaysia. 'I think that a lot of us tend to forget that we're Malaysians first before anything else. 'But when you see Datuk Vaithi, you see the perfect example of how to be a Malaysian.' The 32-chapter biography blends personal anecdotes with historical milestones from Vaithilingam's life. 'This book is largely based on Datuk Vaithi's memory, and I'm amazed by his ability to recall so many details from decades ago,' said Kathirasen during the launch of the book at Royal Lake Club in Kuala Lumpur. He explained that the language was kept plain to ensure accessibility to as many people as possible, especially young readers. 'Some chapters are in a question-and-answer format as if he was speaking directly to the reader rather than an intermediary, that is the writer,' he added. Former deputy International Trade and Industry minister Dr Ong Kian Ming praised the work as 'a wonderful read'. 'If I could capture the essence of this book from just one quote, it would be: The greatest purpose in life, the greatest achievement one could ever have in life, the greatest satisfaction one could ever get in life, can only be found in the service of others. 'The book really communicates Datuk Vaithi's priorities and purpose through action, thought and spirit,' he said. 'From leading the Malaysia Hindu Sangam to guiding the Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Taoism, Datuk Vaithi's contributions remain much needed to this day. 'Especially his approach and voice of reason in interfaith matters,' Ong added. Vaithilingam also played a key role in the development of Malaysian athletics. His involvement in sports began from the time he was a young teacher, and he has since been inducted into the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) Hall of Fame for his contributions. Reflecting on his work, Vaithilingam said that service has been the guiding principle of his life. 'All my life I have been working not as an Indian, Malay or Chinese, but as a Malaysian. 'Whatever I did, whether it was sports, social activities, religion or education, it has always been as a Malaysian and for Malaysians. 'I faced a lot of obstacles before the publication of this book. 'My wife passed away and there was a break, then Covid-19 happened and my son Nantha also passed away last year. 'Despite all this, there was a determination to continue as this book is not just my story, it's a reflection of the many hands and hearts that have worked together to build bridges of understanding and compassion,' Vaithilingam added. Also present at the launch were former health minister Tan Sri Dr S. Subramaniam along with Malaysian sports legend and former OCM deputy president Tan Sri Dr M. NST Leader: Of defence assets and agents
AUG 16 will be a day that the people who matter in the Defence Ministry will never forget. It was the day His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia disclosed to the nation that the ministry was full of agents, ex-generals turned salesmen and even textile merchants peddling drones. He made this disclosure in his royal address during the parade marking the 60th anniversary of the Special Forces Regiment at Kem Iskandar in Mersing, Johor. Relying on agents is a dangerous pursuit for an institution that is tasked with defending the country. And in case they forget, three days later, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim reminded those responsible for procuring defence assets to end the reliance on agents when replying to a question in Parliament. The Defence Ministry, he said, had faced decades of controversies and scandals involving procurement, forcing the government to adopt government-to-government negotiations. Why then is the Defence Ministry packed with agents? Perhaps the RM5 billion defence procurement and development spending in 2024 — an increase of RM2 billion from that of 2020 — has something to do with it. A royal reprimand and a prime ministerial reminder say a lot about the seriousness of the problem. Enough of the "the decades of controversies and scandals", we say. We know that middlemen is a Malaysian malaise, but of all places in the Defence Ministry? The use of agents — ex-generals or otherwise — comes with at least two dangers. Let's begin with the more dangerous of the dangers: poor quality of defence assets peddled by the agents. Compromise the defence assets, then you compromise the defence of the country. Defence assets of quality don't need agents to peddle them. Nations will beat the path to their door. It is "flying coffins", to borrow a royal phrase, like the second-hand A-4 Skyhawk aircraft bought in the 1980s, that need the hawking, excuse the pun. Scrap the plan to buy the 30-year-old Black Hawk helicopters, Sultan Ibrahim ordered the Defence Ministry. Media reports say the armed forces is scrapping its plan to buy four Black Hawk helicopters at a cost of RM187 million. But the question is: why wait for the royal command? Isn't the internal process robust enough to raise red flags? Or is integrity a challenge? Dropping the purchase of the helicopters is just the first step. More needs to be done. The primary interest of agents, even ex-generals turned salesmen, is how much they can get out of the deal. The quality of the defence assets they are hawking or whether or not they are compromising the security of the nation is secondary. For Malaysia, a nation of small means, every ringgit spent must show up its worth. The purchase of 88 second-hand A-4 Skyhawk jets did the exact opposite. It drained the country's coffers of millions. Although the price tag was US$1 million each, getting them refurbished took years, spiralling the cost to four times that to RM1.2 billion, media reports say. Then there is the Scorpene submarine deal in 2002 that cost US$130 million in commission. If this is how we do procurement of defence assets, even hundreds of billions wouldn't be enough.
