
Utopia And Fragile Democracy At Art Basel Fair
The four-day event in the northern Swiss border city of Basel, which closes on Sunday, features more than 280 galleries presenting works by around 4,000 artists.
The monumental works section features an 85-metre-long installation entitled "The Voyage -- A March To Utopia".
Created by the studio of Dutch artist Joep van Lieshout, it features 80 large sculptures forming a procession of absurd objects, where "everybody walks in the same direction... on their way to a happy place", the artist told AFP.
The journey begins with a team of oxen, followed by all means of getting to that better world, including a walking stick, a cart, a toilet on wheels, a wheelchair and a mobile surgical theatre for those struggling to keep up.
Next come objects representing everything the convoy is carrying, followed by sculptures of ghosts symbolising those who didn't make it to the end.
It ends with machines set to destroy the road behind them, so that "there's no going back", the artist explained.
A stone's throw away, Spanish artist Jaume Plensa presents a work composed of 21 aluminium doors engraved with the articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948.
Entitled "Forgotten Dreams", it invites viewers to contemplate collective aspirations and not forget the horrors of the past.
Vietnam-born Danish artist Danh Vo has installed a huge US flag made from hundreds of logs and 13 steel stars, referencing the first version of the flag from 1777.
Reconstructed at Art Basel, "In God We Trust" was first created in 2020, during the presidential election campaign between Donald Trump and Joe Biden.
The logs were removed one by one and burned in fireplaces, gradually causing the flag to disappear.
The work serves as an allegory of the fragility of US democracy.
Art Basel is above all a commercial event, where artists and galleries come to meet wealthy collectors.
But the fair is also very popular with art lovers who come for the simple pleasure of browsing the works on show.
Its "Unlimited" section brings together monumental pieces intended for museums and major collections.
It includes recent as well as older works, including a performance created in 1991 by Felix Gonzalez-Torres, a US artist from Cuba who died of AIDS in 1996.
Called "'Untitled' (Go-Go Dancing Platform)", it features a man dressed in silver shorts dancing on a podium for a few minutes, twice a day.
"It's an interesting moment to revisit it," said the "Unlimited" section's curator, Giovanni Carmine, recalling that the artist created the performance shortly after the death of his partner from AIDS, "in a context that was also very reactionary".
Gonzalez-Torres responded with "a very political gesture" with a performance that is "a celebration of life".
The "Unlimited" hall features 67 works, including three angels by German sculptor Thomas Schutte, which foster "a certain ambivalence", said Carmine.
With "their wings resembling razors", are they "protective angels or angels of the apocalypse?", he asked.
Japanese artist Izumi Kato brings a touch of poetry with his stone structures, painted with enigmatic faces, drawing on the Japanese tradition that each stone contains a spirit.
US artist Arlene Shechet plays on contrasts, with a heavy orange abstract sculpture designed to give an impression of lightness despite its weight.
"The current political situation is dark and so bringing light and colour and joy and spirit and art is very meaningful," she told AFP. 'Skibidi', 'delulu' make their way into Cambridge Dictionary – DW – 08/18/2025
The latest additions to the world's largest online dictionary, among 6,000 others, show how much internet culture is changing the English language. The words "skibidi", "delulu", and "tradwife" are coming to a dictionary near you. These are among the latest Cambridge Dictionary additions of more than 6,000 new words and phrases over the past year, the publisher of the world's largest online dictionary said on Monday. These new inductions into the dictionary reflect how shifting online culture is impacting everyday speech. Among the new entries are Gen Z and Gen Alpha terms such as "skibidi," a nonsense word popularized by the viral YouTube series Skibidi Toilet, "delulu," short for delusional, and "tradwife," describing women who embrace traditional gender roles on social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram. Other additions include "lewk," meaning a distinctive fashion look, "inspo," short for inspiration, and "mouse jiggler," implying someone pretending to labor while working remotely. Rising environmental concerns led to the inclusion of "forever chemical," referring to man-made substances that stay in the environment for years. Colin McIntosh, Lexical Programme manager at the Cambridge Dictionary, told AFP news agency that it is unusual to see words like 'skibidi' and 'delulu' make their entry into the dictionary. "We only add words where we think they'll have staying power," he said. "Internet culture is changing the English language, and the effect is fascinating to observe and capture in the Dictionary."

Indonesian Roof Tilers Flex Muscles To Keep Local Industry Alive
A young Indonesian man turns his back to a crowd, flexing his oiled-up muscles before picking up a stack of roof tiles, holding as many as he can in a pose reminiscent of Mr. Olympia. This is a bodybuilding battle of a different kind -- one where competitors are roof tile factory workers who pump clay instead of iron to bring attention to their dwindling trade. In Java's Jatiwangi city, an Indonesian hub for clay roof tile production nearly 200 kilometres from the capital, Jakarta, dozens of men have been lathering on oil to pose for crowds since 2015 to show they are not going anywhere. The clay industry in Jatiwangi is more than a century old, when terracotta tiles drawing on local heritage were first made by hand to replace thatched house roofs. They are now mostly used for housing, and in the 1930s inspired Indonesia's former Dutch colonial rulers to tile their own government buildings and employee homes. "But over time, it started to fade away," said Illa Syukrillah Syarief, a 48-year-old worker at the Jatiwangi Art Factory who helps to organise the competition. "So we feel that we're not just here to tell stories about roof tiles, but also to be saviours, to preserve the culture of Jatiwangi roof tiles." The workers use clay or local soil to make their tiles, but the younger generation is taking on fewer manual labour jobs and big industry is hitting the revenues of local trade. It has caused fear that their industry could become a forgotten art in the future. "We're pushing through in a situation that's not going so well," said Illa. "We've lost workers, and the demand isn't what it used to be." The shirtless men, young and old, posed for a crowd that included women clad in hijabs and judges who pick the winners of cash prizes up to 1.5 million rupiah ($92) for the number one spot. Attendee Ika, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, called the show "something unique" that displayed "bodybuilding with a distinctive style" rooted in Indonesian culture. The winnings are donated by rival factories whose workers battle it out against one another in the competition, with no sponsors yet stumping up cash for the event. "It was incredible to see the competitors and their style, and all the many things they can do using their hands, using their mouth even, carrying tiles," said foreign judge Alessa Cargnell. The red, earthy tiles have a curved shape that lock in together, making it easier to clasp a stack and pose from the front or the side. One man displayed incredible power to hold a tile between each finger and one from his mouth while standing on one leg, as remixed traditional music typically heard in Indonesian TikTok videos blared in the background. But the strength of the roof tile workforce is not only reserved for the weight room. "We're still determined. The hope is that roof tiles, or processing the soil in Jatiwangi, won't just be a commodity," said Illa. "But truly become an identity: as roof tile makers, as people who work with the earth."
