
VFACTS May 2025: HiLux outsells Ranger, Model Y pushes past Prado
A total of 109,425 new vehicles were delivered in Australia in May 2025, down 1.6 per cent year-on-year, with the Toyota HiLux taking back the top spot last month.
According to data compiled by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) and the Electric Vehicle Council (EVC), the HiLux, Ford Ranger and Toyota RAV4 took the podium spots, with the updated Tesla Model Y storming back up the sales charts to take fourth spot overall.
The Model Y helped boost electric vehicle (EV) deliveries by 10.4 per cent over May 2024 to 10,065 units. While this hell short of hybrids, the rate of growth wasn't as steep; a total of 17,089 hybrids were delivered, up 5.5 per cent.

Plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) beat them both in terms of the rate of growth, rising 117.6 per cent on May 2024 despite the end of the Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) exemption for this powertrain type. A total of 3081 PHEVs were delivered last month.
Private, business and government deliveries were all down, with only rental car deliveries providing some relief, climbing 15.1 per cent over May 2024.
Deliveries were also down in every state and territory compared to May 2024.
Some new brands appeared on the charts this month, including Omoda Jaecoo (310 deliveries), Deepal (67) and GMC (29)
Brands
Toyota held the top spot as usual, though its sales were essentially flat with only a 0.8 per cent year-over-year rise.
That was still better than most brands in the top 10, with the exception of Hyundai (6708 deliveries, up 3.3 per cent), GWM (4272, up 11.8 per cent) and Tesla (3897, up 9.2 per cent).
There were no surprises in the top three, with Toyota once again being followed by Ford and Mazda, ahead of Kia and Hyundai.
Hyundai was fewer than 200 units behind sister brand Kia (6903), though Kia is over 2000 units ahead year-to-date and the launch of the Tasman ute later this year should put even more daylight between them. Kia is sitting at 32,940 deliveries year-to-date, with Hyundai at 30,541 units.
Sixth-place Mitsubishi recorded a significant 25.6 per cent year-over-year drop, likely as stock of discontinued or previous-generation models dries up.
GWM finished ahead of MG in May, which was down 21.4 per cent to 3270 deliveries but still finished within the top 10.
Just a few dozen units separated the Chinese brand from 11th and 12th-place finishers Subaru (3233) and BYD (3225).
The biggest gains this month were recorded by Chery (up 283.7 per cent to 2755 units, just 18 shy of Nissan), BYD (3225, up 68.5 per cent), and Mini (487, up 126.5 per cent).
Various luxury brands had a good month, including Lexus (1376, up 34.9 per cent), Land Rover (811, up 18 per cent), and Genesis (142, up 35.2 per cent).
Models
While the Ford Ranger 4×4 outsold the Toyota HiLux 4×4, the much wider gulf between Ranger 4×2 and HiLux 4×2 deliveries saw the Japanese brand claim the top spot.
Year-to-date, however, the HiLux is sitting at 20,072 deliveries, below not only the Ranger (22,018) but also its RAV4 showroom-mate (21,613).
In May, Ford had two vehicles in the top 20, while Toyota had six. Both of Isuzu Ute's models finished in the top 20 as usual, while Mazda, GWM, Kia, MG and Chery had only one top 20 finisher each, and Hyundai and Mitsubishi had two each.
After notching 19th overall in April, the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro small SUV has continued its climb up the sales charts. It placed 12th, pushing past the MG ZS and bearing down on the Hyundai Kona.

Kia K4 review finds there is still ‘family value' in Cerato replacement
There are big tyre prints to fill for the Kia K4. It's the replacement for the compact Cerato, which has traditionally been one of the biggest sellers for the Korean brand Down Under. The Cerato was popular for good reason. It was one of the best value products on the market – so good that there is one in our garage. Larger than before, bordering on Toyota Camry size, for now the K4 is just available as a sedan with a hatch derivative to come. No frills models can be in your driveway for $32,990 drive-away, although the best value comes once you step further up the specifications tree. Our family tested the range-topping GT-Line, which comes with all the fruit and a turbocharged petrol engine for $46,990 on the road. What do you get? Certainly the most aggressive looking of the K4 bunch, the GT-Line has a low-slung stance sitting on low profile 18-inch alloys, along with exclusive front and rear bumpers and a black grille. Inside, there are heated and cooled front seats trimmed in faux leather with a GT stamp below the headrests, alloy pedals, eight-speaker Harman/Kardon stereo, sunroof and the now quintessential Kia dash featuring twin digital 12.3-inch displays (one for the driver and the other for infotainment) linked by a 5-inch aircon readout. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard across the range along with USB-C ports front and back, while the GT-Line also picks up a wireless phone charging pad. Like the big EV9, the K4 has over the air tech updates, so the latest satnav maps, interfaces and software enhancements can be done without visiting a dealer. White is the only no-cost colour option, with grey, red, blue, pastel green, black and a pearl white adding $600. Turbo models require servicing annually or every 10,000km, whereby naturally aspirated models lengthen to 15, price servicing is available with the total cost of $3842 for seven maintenance visits – that's an average of about $550 and about $15 more expensive per service than the non-turbo models. Overall servicing costs are typically more expensive with Kia than some rivals, with the Toyota Camry hybrid costing on average $343 for seven services. But Kia does have a long list of inclusions, so it's worth checking the fine print. Kia's seven-year warranty was one of the pivotal reasons its cars became popular in Australia. Other brands like Nissan and Mitsubishi have now pushed to 10 years (with some servicing caveats), but five remains the most popular minimum. How was the drive? European quality resonates from the K4 ride. Like all Kias, the K4 underwent Australian testing and analysis. Suspension changes are then made at the factory to better suit local conditions. The GT-Line has a fancier multi-link suspension set-up at the rear compared to the other K4s and while the overall performance felt firm on occasions, it was surprisingly nimble in the bends and remained composed during quick changes in direction. Despite having a turbocharged four-cylinder under the bonnet, the GT-Line isn't raucous or setting new performance benchmarks. There is a nice exhaust tune, but it's more a grand tourer with a focus on comfort and efficiency – our test saw average fuel consumption of 7.7L/100km, which is one litre more than the official figure from Kia. The eight-speed automatic gearbox replaces the seven-speed found in the Cerato GT, which shifts well and doesn't have the hesitation of the old dual-clutch box. Would you buy one? Kel: Our Cerato Sport+ has been a brilliant car, I love it for the ease of operation and features for the price tag. Technology takes a hefty step forward in the K4 and I felt like the ride quality was comparable to the European big guns. But the sedan probably isn't my style, so I'd wait for the hatch or opt for the Sportage SUV. Grant: Prices have risen with the K4, which does dilute the bang-for-buck factor. To obtain the Cerato equivalent we'd be looking at an extra investment of about $7000. All facets have moved forward, especially the ride improvements which paves the way for a go-fast version. Collectively the tech advances, seven-year warranty and the strong specification list keep the K4 in Australia's best value list.

Kia won't extend warranty to best Hyundai
Kia Australia says it's not looking to extend its factory warranty beyond seven years, regardless of the increasing number of other auto brands – including its own sister brand Hyundai – now offering aftersales coverage for the same period or longer. Speaking with CarExpert at the Australian launch of the facelifted Sportage SUV, the company's general manager for product Roland Rivero said the Korean brand's once-benchmark warranty is no longer a key reason for purchase for its customers, and therefore it's focusing on other areas. 'I think we were very fortunate when we did launch [that] very definitive seven-year warranty… with how much clear air time we had before other OEMs [automakers] introduced theirs. That did a great job for our brand. It gave people permission to look at a Kia product, and for that point in time and where the brand was at, it was required,' Mr Rivero said. 'Where the brand is at now, the warranty component is not so much the driver of what makes customers walk into our showroom. We're quite happy with where it is at the moment – the same as what we launched back in October 2014 – and there are no plans that I'm aware of to change or go any higher. 'I think that component of reason for purchase, which was once probably number one, isn't quite number one anymore. It's slipped further down, and more of a closing component, as opposed to the main reason to attract customers into the Kia brand,' Mr Rivero added. Kia Australia was the first brand in Australia to offer a seven-year/unlimited-kilometre new-vehicle warranty, which commenced on October 1, 2014. Unlike many brands at the time that stipulated conditions around roadside assistance, capped-price servicing or mileage, Kia's comprehensive cover also included roadside assistance and capped price servicing for the same period. Before that, Hyundai Australia pioneered the five-year warranty back in 2007. Kia followed suit in 2008, at a time when the warranties of most brands didn't extend past three years or 150,000km, at best. On July 1, 2025, Korean compatriot Hyundai Australia will move to a similar seven-year/unlimited-km warranty, which will be backdated to all new vehicles registered from January 1, 2025. The introduction of a seven-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty brings Hyundai in line with sister brand Kia, as well as Chery and Skoda, which is the only European brand backing its vehicles with seven years of coverage. Nissan Australia moved to a conditional 10-year/300,000km warranty earlier this year – contingent on vehicles behind serviced within the brand's dealer network over that time – matching Alliance partner Mitsubishi's similar program (albeit limited to 200,000km). MG Motor Australia covers all of its vehicles with a 10-year/250,000km warranty with no servicing requirement to extend the coverage to a decade – though it's only for private buyers who don't use their vehicles for commercial purposes.
