Transport From Slavery To Salvation

Time of Indiaa day ago

"The bitterest thing in today's sorrow is the memory of yesterday's joy," wrote Kahlil Gibran, but to let go is easier said than done. It is one of the most challenging things to do. Material objects metamorphose into immaterial objects sooner or later. Ironically, it is physically nonexistent entities like emotions, sentiments and memories that turn into attachments from which it is painful to detach.
Letting go
does not necessarily mean getting rid of or throwing things out. The problem arises when possessions become obsessions. A stack of never-to-be-worn clothes, which, if given away, could help some; out-of-action gadgets, which feng shui will advise not to keep as they gather negative energies; chipped ceramic cups; never-to-be-read books...the list can go on and on. Besides collecting dust and creating clutter, they remind us of days that never return. All because we have allowed ourselves to become victims of sentiments or emotions.
Detachment
does not hurt, but
attachment
does. Memories do not occupy any physical place, though they are often described as bittersweet. The past does not come back but can still impact the present and future.
"The root of all suffering is attachment," said the
Buddha
. These attachments can be both material and mental. According to
Buddhism
, the key to overcoming suffering is letting go of desires, attachments and aversions. In the universe, which is transcendental, ever changing, when we 'hang on', we go against the law of nature, and suffer.
Possession and past restrict, suffocate, confine, ensnare and entangle. According to the
Bhagwad Gita
, "Attachments interfere with a person's ability to think clearly or rationally. When the person is free from attachments, he becomes equal to attractions, aversions and intelligence." Vairagya, relinquishment, translates into freedom from bondages and bindings, a transport from slavery to salvation.

In Christianity, renunciation is the forsaking of worldly desires and possessions to follow the path of Jesus Christ and his teachings. Jesus once advised a rich ruler, "Sell everything you own and give to the poor, and you will have treasures in heaven. Then come and follow me." Jainism speaks of aparigraha - attachment brings suffering and sorrow, which is why all worldly possessions and relations are to be given up. Islam says, "Detachment means nothing should own you."
According to the
Maitri Upanishad
, "Control of thought is liberation." One must go beyond the elements, senses, object of senses, greed, envy, leisure, self-love, anger, and lust to be on the path of liberation and realising Brahmn. Renunciation does not mean being nonloving, indifferent or apathetic. It means surmounting obsession, weakness, addiction, ego or mania as these negative entities cast shadows on our thoughts, affect reason, relationships and realities. Imprisonment by materials and moments is the angst that prevents living and enjoying the present. Isha Upanishad says, "Whatever moves in this moving world is enveloped by God. Therefore, enjoy renunciation; do not covet what belongs to others." Longing for what is not ours can only bring about contempt and conflicts.
The best lesson of attachment with detachment is the Sun. Without any demand, desire, or discrimination, the Sun, benevolent niskamkarmi, sakha, sustains life on earth and the earth itself with its light and warmth.

Mass cleaning drive to begin at govt offices on June 5

Coimbatore: A mass cleaning drive will begin on June 5 to clear old materials dumped on all govt offices premises in Coimbatore district. This is in connection with the statewide initiative 'Thooimai Mission' for sustainable waste management in Tamil Nadu and the observance of the World Environment Day . The statewide mission was launched in April. On Friday, the first meeting of the mission was conducted in Coimbatore district. District-level and block-level committees have been formed. NGOs and volunteers who are already working on a similar mission have been included as committee members at various levels in panchayats and villages. Ten members of the Residents Awareness Association of Coimbatore (RAAC) are part of the district-level committee. RAAC secretary R Raveendran said the focus is to have source segregation at the grassroots level, go for recycling and eliminate landfills. In the present scenario, even in a small village, panchayats are gradually creating landfills due to a lack of process, which is the result of mixed waste. There are local recycling industries in the market that are performing well. "We are already working in Perur and Keeranatham villages with progressive results in waste management. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Bolsas nos olhos? (Tente isso hoje à noite) Revista Saúde & Beleza Saiba Mais Undo Even if we separate plastic waste, the multi-layered packaging (MLP), i.e., packaging of chips, biscuits and other eateries, must go for different processing, which will later be sent to the cement industry. However, if we combine all kinds of plastics together, they will certainly end up being dumped in vacant spaces or water bodies. Also, scrutinising the best vendor for recycling should be taken care of," said Raveendran. He specified that the old materials like tables, chairs and other items that still hold capital value would be sold, and the rest would be sent for recycling. "Unlike any other activities like desilting, municipal solid waste management is a daily process without compromise. The major problem is the payment for sanitary work, which stands low. Probably if their payments are raised from Rs 5,000 to Rs 8,000, there would certainly be a viable change in waste management," he added.

After 77 yrs, Banka village gets water at the turn of a tap

1 2 Patna: For nearly eight decades since Independence, the women of Gauripur village in Banka district carried out a daily ordeal under the blistering sun. With buckets and utensils in hand and on their heads, they walked to the nearby river, dug into the sand and collected water just enough to quench their thirst and keep their families going. Not anymore. The public health and engineering department (PHED) has brought a wave of relief to this village, home to over 1,000 residents. In just 15 days, three hand pumps were installed and all 210 households were connected with piped water under the state govt's "Har Ghar Nal Ka Jal" scheme. The village, located barely 12km from the Banka district headquarters, had been inexplicably overlooked for decades. That changed when the matter came to the notice of the district magistrate, who promptly flagged the issue. "Right since Independence, people from this village dug river sand to collect water for their survival. However, once we got this information through the district magistrate concerned, we acted and arranged water for the villagers at the village itself. The villagers now have freedom from a decades-old water crisis in a record 15 days," the PHED said in a statement issued on Saturday. According to the statement, all homes now receive clean drinking water directly through household pipelines. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Bolsas nos olhos? (Tente isso hoje à noite) Revista Saúde & Beleza Saiba Mais Undo The three new hand pumps serve as a backup water source, particularly useful when electricity outages interrupt the piped supply. "The village is now completely free from the old problem of collecting water from the river," the department said. PHED minister Neeraj Kumar Singh praised the meticulous execution of the project and said, "The department prioritises swift action on any water-related complaints to ensure clean water reaches every home. The work done in Gauripur village in record time is an example of this commitment," the minister said. Under the govt's flagship "Har Ghar Nal Ka Jal" initiative, over 1.75 crore rural households across Bihar have been connected to piped water supply. The department has also introduced a grievance redressal system through which residents can register water supply issues via a toll-free number, mobile app and social media platforms.
