Injured pony rescued after ‘cart chase' through Cape Town streets
Cape of Good Hope SPCA Wildlife Rescue officer Stephen Benjamin spotted the cart, carrying three people and the scrap, earlier this week in Mitchells Plain. Concerned about the welfare of the animal, he stopped the cart for inspection.
'From the outset, the occupants were uncooperative and obstructive. On closer inspection, Benjamin discovered the pony had severe wounds on his side, consistent with injuries caused by an ill-fitted harness and the cart rubbing against the animal's skin,' said the SPCA.

Arcadia Primary bright sparks crowned Phendulani Literary Quiz winners
Arcadia Primary School has proved it has what it takes — its pupils have won the 14th Phendulani Literary Quiz held at Grey Junior School. The other primary schools that took part in the quiz on Tuesday were Heatherbank, John Masiza, Sanctor, Triomf, Boet Jeggels and Thornhill. The 48 participants taking part in 2025 were divided into eight teams, made up of six pupils each. Defending champions Boet Jeggels came third, and Heatherbank were second. The aim of Phendulani is to promote reading and comprehension in a fun way, while also making sure that books which have been donated are read. The entertaining quiz is thoroughly enjoyed by all, as attested to in the feedback forms which the children complete each year. Many SA schools with well-stocked libraries have taken part in the international Kids' Lit Quiz for more than a decade, with Nelson Mandela Bay schools having participated since 2006. It was felt that an outreach quiz along similar lines should be extended to schools which did not have libraries of their own, and so Phendulani was born. In March, a set of 12 books was provided to each of the participating schools. The books are sourced by Marj Brown, the mastermind of the quiz, and a school librarian. Each school enters up to two teams of six grade 6 or 7 pupils, who are required to read as many of these books as possible. The quiz has four rounds of questions, with each round consisting of 10 questions. Each team works on the questions together, writing down the answers, which are then marked. The Eastern Cape region's quiz is a collaborative effort, co-ordinated by Grey Junior School librarian Michéle Kerley. The school librarians from St George's, Grey, Collegiate, Clarendon, Kabega and Woodridge, as well as the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipal Library Services, support the schools taking part by providing transport to the quiz, lunch packs for the children, and prizes for the winners, as well as making sure every participant goes home with a book of their own. Grey Junior headmaster Grant Butler was the quiz master. Midrand SPCA hosts successful AGM, welcomes new member
The chairperson of the Midrand SPCA said they are thrilled to welcome a new member onto the management committee. Speaking shortly after the AGM on July 26, chairperson Brenda Lucas said they welcome Yas Mahomed as a new committee member. The AGM was held at the Midrand SPCA in Glen Austin. Lucas said it was a successful AGM with continuity, and all members retained their positions. Also read: Midrand SPCA welcomes new inspector 'There is a new committee member who will be joining the management committee of the SPCA, but other than that, there have been no changes to the management committee. Some executives had to step down because they had served for two years, but they could stand for re-election, and all of them did stand for re-election,' said Lucas. Steven Johnstone will serve as deputy chairperson, while Jonathan Burrows serves as treasurer and Shirley Winter as secretary. Lucas believes this will serve as continuity in achieving animal welfare. Lucas said after serving for two years, members need to step down and stand for re-election should they wish to continue serving in the management committee, according to their constitution.
