Tech Tycoon's Yacht Lifted To Surface, 10 Months After It Sank Off Sicily Coast

PORTICELLO, Italy:
Salvage experts lifted Mike Lynch's sunken superyacht to the surface and began pumping seawater out of it on Saturday, 10 months after it sank off the coast of Sicily, killing the British tech tycoon, his teenage daughter and five others.
Work resumed at first light, with one of the most powerful maritime cranes in Europe having been used to haul the 56-metre-long (184-foot) Bayesian from beneath the waves.
The upper decks appeared badly damaged while the blue hull was encrusted with mud.
The Bayesian was moored off the small port of Porticello, near Palermo, in August last year when it sank during a sudden storm. The yacht was vulnerable to violent winds and was probably knocked over by gusts of more than 117 km (73 miles) per hour, an interim British report said last month.
The vessel will be held in an elevated position over the weekend while checks and preparations are made, said TMC Marine, which has been leading the salvage operation, working with Dutch specialists Hebo Maritiemservice to lift the yacht 50 metres from the seabed over the past few days.
It is then expected to be transported to the nearby port of Termini Imerese on Monday and handed over to the authorities who are investigating the sinking.
The recovery process has been made easier after the vessel's 72-metre mast was detached using a remote-controlled cutting tool and placed on the seabed on Tuesday.
In addition to Lynch, founder of the software company Autonomy, his daughter Hannah, lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda, banker Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy, and chef Recaldo Thomas were killed when the yacht sank. Nine other crew members and six guests were rescued.

Ahmedabad plane crash: 259 bodies, including 19 ground casualties, identified; remains of 256 handed over to families

After over 11 days of the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, 259 bodies have been identified by Monday. Sources told The Indian Express that only one Indian male passenger's remains were yet to be confirmed by DNA profiling. Of these 259 identified bodies, 256 have been handed over to families so far, said Dr Rakesh Joshi, the Medical Superintendent of Ahmedabad Civil Hospital. Dr Joshi said of the 259 bodies, 253 were identified through DNA analysis and six by facial recognition. He declined to offer an official death toll, stating that the Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) process was underway. Dr Joshi said that of the 259 bodies that had been identified by June 23 evening, 253 — including 240 from the aircraft and 13 on ground — had been identified through DNA profiling. Bodies of six people – all ground casualties – had been identified by their faces. Sources told The Indian Express that only one body, that of an Indian male passenger who was aboard the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner that crashed on June 12, was yet to be identified, even as the forensic experts had exhausted all the 318 samples from the remains found at the crash site in Meghaninagar area of Ahmedabad. This is also likely the final death toll because of the process of elimination, the sources added. If 240 bodies of passengers and crew had been identified from the aircraft, this would mean that only one body remained to be identified. The plane crash had only one survivor – Viswash Kumar Ramesh – while the rest 241 passengers died in the tragedy. Jaypalsingh Rathore, the Additional Commissioner of Police for Sector-2, had earlier confirmed to The Indian Express that only four people had been reported missing on the ground after the crash. The bodies of all four had been identified through DNA profiling and handed over to the families, thus leaving no person in the ground unaccounted for, he said. This took the total death toll on the ground to 19 persons, a fact further corroborated by Dr Joshi who said that no new bodies had been recovered from the crash site over the last several days. Given that most of the aircraft debris has been moved out of the crash site, and there is little chance of discovery of any new body now, the final death toll of the crash of AI 171 would be restricted to 260 people, the sources said. Sources also told The Indian Express that there had been certain problems in matching the DNA of the remaining deceased passenger to the relatives, who had submitted their blood samples. This could be due to extensive damage to the body of this victim, who has been identified by the flight manifest but not yet confirmed by DNA, they added. The name of this victim has been kept under wraps for now. Meanwhile, Dr Joshi said that of the 259 identified bodies, 256 had been handed over to families. These include 180 Indians, seven Portuguese, one Canadian and 49 British passengers, besides 19 non-passengers. The three remaining bodies were also of British nationals, two of which are likely to be collected on the intervening night of June 23-24. The third will be received by the kin on June 25. Of the 256 bodies handed over to kin, 28 have been flown over by air while 228 have been transported by road.

Prosus bets on India as its creates number 1 lifestyle ecom company

Dutch investor Prosus is betting big on India as it builds the number one lifestyle ecommerce company, including in Europe and Latin America. This bet is being built on the ecosystem it has created in every region. This lifestyle ecommerce company in India is built on the ecosystem powered by food services (Swiggy), fintech (PayU), commerce (Meesho) and experiences (Urban). 'We are sure that focusing on a few ecosystems and in a few regions, the synergies generate a lot of value to our company in terms of cross-sell and sharing best practices,' said Fabricio Bloisi, chief executive officer, in an analyst call. The investor in FY25 clocked revenues of $6.2 billion, a 21 per cent consolidated increase from $5.5 billion in FY24. More than 50 per cent of its India investment has given a healthy internal rate of return (IRR) for the company. PayU PayU India has reorganised its payments business while tightening underwriting after losses in its consumer loan portfolio, according to Prosus. Prosus added it aimed to restore the fintech's profitability after it recorded a trading loss or a negative aEBIT despite an improvement in revenue and margins. In a report published Monday, Prosus said, fintech firm PayU India's payments business broke even in the second half of FY25, with a revenue growth rate of 12 per cent to $498 million in 2024-25. PayU Finance, the credit arm of the company, saw its revenue grow to $171 million, taking the firm's consolidated revenue for FY25 to $669 million. 'To accelerate business growth, we have reorganised the payments business with dedicated teams focusing on key account management, acquiring new customers in existing segments as well as forging new partnerships,' Prosus said. Food delivery Prosus noted the growth that Swiggy has brought in its quick commerce arm, Instamart, had come at the cost of profitability challenges due to expansion in its network and intense competition. 'Swiggy's Q125 results showcased a year-on-year GOV growth of approximately 40 per cent led by a food delivery GOV increase of 18 per cent year on year, and quick commerce (Instamart) GOV growth of 101 per cent year on year, with 316 new dark stores added in the quarter,' it said in a report. Swiggy was aiming contribution breakeven in the quick commerce segment in the next three to five quarters, it noted. It added the food-delivery company's adjusted Ebitda (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation) loss reduced to $182 million during January-December 2024 from $261 million in the same period the previous year.
